motown did this on quite a few songs and IMO it was to keep the momentum of the tune going. You Can't Hurry Love had a break, there are various versions of Heatwave by MRATV with longer breaks.

plus it could have had something to due with the run time for the side.

i like the alt version though in the Symphony EE.

If I remember correctly, I don't think Motown edited it out but rather Diana, by mistake, sang over the instrumental break believing it to be the next verse so they just went with that. When they did the expanded Symphony album, they restored it.
