Do you guys ever watch "Wheel of Fortune?" We started watching it waiting for "Jeopardy." Our experience with Phrazle pays off. However, what they call a phrase is often disturbing.

I've been watching WOF since whenever. Actually, almost every night for the past 15 years, or so, especially when I was visiting my elderly parents. And to be honest, I'm old now, too!

We have dinner at about 7:30 each night so I'll watch WOF while waiting for the chef to work his magic, or curse. We watch the beginning of Jeopardy! and depending on the contestants, or the game, we will pause the program to watch after dinner. Whatever we choose to do, we always watch the Final Jeopardy!, at least. Mostly to see which of us is dumber. Notice I didn't say to see which of us is smarter!

As for the WOF categories some are a bit strange or quite a stretch. I see online that some bloggers call the Phrase category the 'dreaded Phrase category". Sometimes it seems they take a random adjective and pair it with a random noun. At times it seems almost cruel, especially for the Bonus Round when time is limited. I think because the show has been on for so long that using common phrases has long since been retired.

I think in their effort to vary the phrases they resort to some strange word combinations. For the regular games when they are spinning the wheel I guess a weird phrase is okay. However, for the Bonus Round then just putting any two or three words together doesn't work. I just checked online for an example and the one I saw was "CHEWY TAFFY" the contestant didn't solve the puzzle and commented that she never would have come up with that response. I agree. Yes, chewy taffy is a thing but would anyone have come up with that reply?

Wheel of Fortune -- It is infuriating when three spins in a row produce
"bankrupt." Maybe there are too many on the wheel. It is hard to figure
out the "rules" when they aren't the same each night, it seems. It is also
infuriating when a greedy contestant ought to be able to "solve" the
puzzle but chooses to spin one last time and then forfeits his hard work
to someone else. Furthermore, it seems that when the trips are less
glamorous, there is a better chance of winning a car or more than $40,000.

We are frustrated by how little opportunity there is for us to view and study
the board. I do think Ryan Seacrest is very amiable and doing a great job,
as is Ken Jennings, for the most part.

We've only recently begun watching WOF, because the news is just too
disturbing. ANYTHING mindless is preferred. On Jeopardy, we skip the
interviews and only do the questions [answers]. Sometimes it seems that
Ken Jennings is not even-handed in his acceptance of a response.

It gets me on WoF when somebody clearly knows the answer, spins again, and instead of asking for a letter with 2 or more spots on the board, asks for a letter they know pops up once. And then, they solve the board right afterward. SMH.

Wheel of Fortune -- It is infuriating when three spins in a row produce
"bankrupt." Maybe there are too many on the wheel. It is hard to figure
out the "rules" when they aren't the same each night, it seems. It is also
infuriating when a greedy contestant ought to be able to "solve" the
puzzle but chooses to spin one last time and then forfeits his hard work
to someone else. Furthermore, it seems that when the trips are less
glamorous, there is a better chance of winning a car or more than $40,000.

We are frustrated by how little opportunity there is for us to view and study
the board. I do think Ryan Seacrest is very amiable and doing a great job,
as is Ken Jennings, for the most part.

We've only recently begun watching WOF, because the news is just too
disturbing. ANYTHING mindless is preferred. On Jeopardy, we skip the
interviews and only do the questions [answers]. Sometimes it seems that
Ken Jennings is not even-handed in his acceptance of a response.

I find that the rules are the same every night as they have been for the many years that I've been watching. What you might be observing is Ryan Seacrest, as the new host, getting his footing and learning the ropes. What I've noticed, particularly, is that during the "Toss-Ups", he is not always asking the contestant who buzzed-in for an immediate response, allowing them a second or two. Pat Sajak always cut-off the contestant who didn't respond immediately as is the expectation for the 'toss-ups'.

Both WOF and Jeopardy have judges who will weigh-in as necessary, particularly on Jeopardy. I read some online blogs that Jeopardy games were interrupted frequently in the months when there were guest hosts. It mentioned that the judges had to check responses. This interrupted the flow of the game as contestants had to wait for the judges before taping resumed.

Yes, Ryan is very amiable. It is a more lively and energetic game than when Pat hosted. I liked Pat's subdued style and dry wit. I'm assuming the producers wanted a livelier game when they got a younger host. During International Week when they show clips from "Wheel" in other countries most of them are quite loud and lively.

I've noticed that a lot of game shows that air on prime time at night are very loud and lively. I rarely watch those or if I do I find them less enjoyable.

I agree that some moves by contestants are mind-boggling. I often wonder if some of the contestants have ever watched WOF more than a few times before becoming a contestant. As any game, there are certain strategic and skillful moves that enhance your luck. Of course, landing on a Bankrupt or Lose A Turn can't be avoided. It has been mentioned that being in the studio is a lot different than sitting on your couch watching TV. So, I'll cut them some slack. Others who consistently make poor choices I will acknowledge in unkind comments that they deserved to lose their turn or the game!

I like Ken Jennings, as well. I think the producers are also trying to liven things up on Jeopardy. A lot of the interviews seem to be focused on personal interests and activities of the contestants that aren't necessarily academic or scholarly, as seemed to be the case when Alex hosted. Most of the contestants come across as average people, as opposed to intellectual and nerdy. Others come across as lovable nerds when they discuss their interests or eccentricities.

Maybe it's the format that took awhile to follow. One night, it's one thing and then one night it's another. Some I like better than others. I don't care
for the horizontal and vertical words. I know they are trying to jazz up the program. It took awhile to get used to the "before" and "after," also.

In Jeopardy there is something like, that, too or combining the beginning of one word with the ending of another, or some such. Trickery. It might make the game more interesting to some, but both shows have endured such popularity because the viewers like what they are used to, IMO. It's a comfort thing. Oh well, they have to capture a newer, sharper, younger audience.

It's always gratifying when someone finally wins a car.
