INTRODUCTION:

As you'll discover below, most of the MOTORCITY recording artists featured an album of their own [[titled after one of their recent single releases) as well as a "Very Best Of" album.

At the time of purchase back in the mid-to-late 1990's, I bought every one I could get my hands on. Unfortunately, I have only 22 of them which was all that were available to me at the time. It boggles the mind to see how many individual-artist album titles were planned but never released.

For now, let me share with you the MOTORCITY individual-artist CD titles from my personal collection which I've compiled for you here!

As the "official uploader," I can say that I have been pleasantly surprised by how much I like some of the Motorcity recordings. As I mentioned in another thread, the only tracks I had ever listened to or bought were the Marvelettes, and not too long ago, the FLOs album which is also in Gary's Jukebox above but referred to by Levine as the Supreme Ladies.

I have found most interesting the tracks and albums by artists who might be considered "second tier," or those with whom I wasn't all that familiar. Jake Jacas I had never even heard of, but I bought his album pictured above and like it very much. I understand he was with Motown just briefly in the 80s. But he has a great voice, and I'm often partial to a male singing falsetto as he sometimes does. I have also heard some of the tracks now from the Joe Stubbs album, and what a fantastic singer he was. Of course I knew who he was, but I don't think I'd ever heard him on a solo recording before. His version of "My Girl" has much of the phrasing as David Ruffin's lead with the Tempts on the same song, but he still has his own signature. I'm also anxious to hear more of the Billy Griffin and Edwin Starr selections.

I agree that Levine recorded far too much for everything to be a classic, but there are definitely some great tracks amongst these, and it is fun to discover "new" music anytime. And I still think that some of his recordings have to be considered historic, such as what must be the last songs Billy Eckstine ever recorded.

I wonder if there is a way to contact Mr. Levine so he knows that many appreciate his music. He seems active on YouTube so I may try to get a message to him.

At first glance, it is easy to think that many of those titles shown in that link above will just be re-runs of previous releases.

And that is largely true, but just occasionally something unusual or just a little different can come up.

I tend to think that research works best by checking out the earliest releases, and then taking it from there. But it's a slog....

And all the released 12" single sleeves, pictured both front and back, would make a mesmerising thread all of their own....

74 Jake Jacas - Two Way Street

- versions of all the tracks feature on "The Very Best Of Jake Jacas" which was released on 17 September 1996 whereas Motorcity 74 would have been a 1991 release. I can't say whether the track lengths are the same. But it kinda makes you wonder why they couldn't release "Two Way Street" in 1991 but could release the same tracks 5 years later. Also the album would have been unusual in having 12 tracks rather than the usual 10.

77 Saundra Edwards - "Tow Away Zone" [[what a great title)

7 of the 10 tracks [[plus others) appeared on either "Best Of Motorcity" or the "Dancing In The Streets" CD series. Excluded are "Hotter Than The Summer Days", "Forget It" and "Darling Baby" though I assume all these tracks have been available for digital download. Pretty sure I've heard more than one Motorcity/Saundra Edwards version of "Put Yourself In My Place".

99 - J.J.Barnes - Happy Road

Ignoring track length versions of all the tracks are on "The Very Best Of J.J. Barnes". Again it makes you wonder why they couldn't release the album but were able to include all the tracks on the Best Of release.

I don't recall if any of the songs were credited to Ian Levine alone - all seem to have been in collaboration with others - and there were some great songwriters writing for Motorcity weren't there. It does beg the question as to how much Ian put into each song but there's no doubting his very hard work and commitment to this project - simply breath-taking.

Love this track from the Betty Lavette album listed above. The background doesn't sound formulaic like some of the others, not so obviously "computer generated."

Question for you, WGB. Would this be one of the tracks which has been redubbed to a new backing track? I really like it. Honestly, I'd heard of Betty Lavette but couldn't name anything she ever sang. I think her stint at Motown was fairly late in the game, meaning late 70s, maybe?

You will have noticed the difference in versions, between the one used for the 'Very Best Of' album, and the one used in the video clip that you have posted immediately above.

The 'VBO' version was the first. And was originally used with the video.

The version you now hear with the video is indeed from a later date, with a new backing track used.

I can't give you a date for it just now, but the signature sample drum roll places it as a later recording.

Also, the guitar solo sounds, which really lift it above the standard Motorcity production....although the first version, while not perfect, is not bad. [even though, IMO, the drum/percussion sound is too clumsy, and needed overdubs...and the string sound notes are sustained for too long].

'Let Me Down Easy' is likely to be the song for which Bettye Lavette is most remembered - and from 1965, when her first name was spelled 'Betty'.
