That time when Toni Braxton copied Diana Ross

Homage or rip off? Watch the whole video. Especially the beginning and the end.

That would depend on whose idea it was. Did she come up with this, or did the producers of the award show conjure it up? If the producers did this, I'd call it a rip off. If Toni was behind it, I'd call it an homage.

I remember watching this when it was originally aired and thinking that Toni must have really liked Diana or at least Diana's show opening. I would consider this a homage as it seems more like something she would have thought to emulate as opposed to a producer's suggestion.

I'll go with homage. Though, it is such a direct copy of Diana that to perform the routine with no shout-out anywhere does make it lean towards ripoff. If the greedy, griftin' Gayes had been involved there woulda been DRAMA to the $$$$$$'s.

Has it been verified that Diana Ross was the first performer to make a concert entrance via a "through a screen" as she did in her show in the late 70s?

Wouldn't matter if she wasn't. The video screen entrance isn't the question here. I think it's the stairs, the being carried away, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if after Diana there were other artists who made video screen entrances, but this was almost a direct takeoff of what Diana had already done. I don't know how much say the artists have in their performances. I thought the producers of the awards show are the ones who decide what goes on in their production. If I'm right, this is a rip off. If Toni came up with this, I believe she did it in homage to Diana. I couldn't see Toni being that lazy.
