Marvelettes "Please Mr. Postman" story on Yahoo today....

I have found these short articles from udiscovermusic nice and informative, especially since they are being posted by Yahoo Entertainment for the general public to read and maybe discover the music we all love!

Thanks for alerting us to this article. The more on the Marvelettes the better. Also note that the article has a link to an article by Brian Holland.

The Marvelettes legacy will live "FOREVER." Next to PMP, Forever is my all time Marvelettes song. It is dynamic.

The only fact left out of the story, other than it hitting #1, was the fact that it was the very first #1 for the Motown Record Corporation. But other than that they recognized it hit #1.

Thank you for posting this. One interesting tidbit about the song [[and I didn't see it mentioned in the article...my bad, if it was in there) was that Marvin Gaye played the drums on that recording. This is something I had read many years ago. One of the sources said that he was the only drummer, and another source said he was one of two drummers on that recording.

Woodward, the headline of the article mentions the song being Motown's first #1 record.

Jobucats it was also mentioned that Marvin is on drums:

"The drummer on the session was another inexperienced performer, a skinny 22-year-old hopeful named Marvin Gaye."

I will keep posting these as they come up. There was also a story last week on the Four Tops. I'll see if I can find it again.

DWSheffer, I apologize for repeating what was already in the article that my 'senior' eyes and brain didn't catch. I need to remember the adage, and I paraphrase, "It is better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt."

I believe "Please, Mr. Postman" was the first physical copy of a Motown record I ever saw. As a young kid, the thing that always stood out to me was those background vocals. Great memory.
