“Mind, Body and Soul:” A question

If this has been discussed in the past, my bad.

“Mind, Body and Soul” was written by Dunbar and Wayne [[the latter being H-D-H) and published by H-D-H’s Gold Forever company. It is not, therefore, an actual Motown song. Yet around the time of its release by Flaming Ember it was recorded by several Motown acts including Syreeta, Suzee Ikeda and Jean Terrell. I can’t recall another instance of something like this happening. Does anyone know the dynamics of how this occurred?
    Thank you for your input.

I've sometimes thought that Motown bought in some sheet music and then got several artists to record it so that they got their money's worth lol [[I wonder at the mechanics of all that - how many copies would they buy at one go?).

For example, "Hey Jude", as by The Beatles, was recorded in 1969 by The Temptations, DRATS and Smokey & The Miracles, and in 1970 by Junior Walker.
