The Motown Box 2005

When this 4CD box set was released in 2005, I dismissed it on the grounds that I already had everyone of its 70+ tracks on other collections. However, it now transpires that over 30 of the titles are extended versions of the originals that have never been released elsewhere.
Do any forum members own this box set and is it the ‘must have’ collection that has been described on some on-line retail reviews?

Sounds a great boxset. Can I put out an appeal to forum members in US for details of any retailers who may have a copy of The Motown Box for sale. Ive exhausted all searches here in the UK. Thought I had bought a copy from Amazon but the seller no longer had the item for sale and should have been removed from the listing.

I have thought about starting a thread about this CD set before! It is fantastic!!! Equally excellent for both the casual Motown fan and the Motown aficionado, as the CDs contain LOADS of hits [and some nicely chosen non-hits], many of which are in previously-unreleased extended STEREO versions!! And, a very nice box and booklet.

Hi Paul, I only heard about this collection last week when I re-read the wonderful Motown Junkies review of “Heatwave”, my all time favourite Motown record. One contributor mentioned the extended version on “The Motown Box”, managed to hear a version on Spotify but just had to have a physical version of my own.
I have managed to purchase the box set today from Ebay USA and looking forward to listening to the 30+ other extended mixes and first-time stereo edits.

I haven't played my copy for a while but I remember Going To A Go-Go has a mixing problem where there are some aspects slightly out of synch. I think it's a slight delay on the backing vocal sections of "going to a go-go".

To be blunt, I'm getting this because out of all the years of buying any of the 300,000 Bazillion Motown compilations, this one for once, gives the Marvelettes a bit more representation instead of the same old "Postman Bill," "Postman Bill," "Postman Bill." It's always pissed me off that we never get things like "I'll Keep Holding On," "Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead" or the beautiful "When You're Young And In Love."

Gary, when I started reading this thread I thought "This sounds like a great set. I don't think I ever heard about it." Then as I read more and the cover was shown I realized that I DID own a copy of it! I have so many CD's that I can't remember what I have and what I don't anymore! I do have the retail version, though, so I don't have those extra songs from the PBS version. At least, I don't think I do!

I saw that PBS special. After I saw the special I purchased The Box in the store. As it turned out a relative purchased it from the PBS special and if I remember correctly, it had different track listings.

The discs look in excellent condition although the booklet is slightly loose where it is connected to the spine. Hopefully, tomorrow I can sit down and enjoy listening to all the tracks.

Andantes – [[Like A) Nightmare [[First time Stereo Mix)

The tracks by the Miracles, Temptations and the Andantes are available on YouTube, although I haven’t listened to them yet, but they each have the additional description included.

So, that only leaves Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight missing from the alternative Disc 4.

I have "Pretty Little Baby" on the 1970s UK vinyl version of Marvin's Anthology.

My favourite track should, of course, be Disc 3 Track 7 – Reach Out I’ll Be There.

Not only does it have around 90 seconds extra over the standard version, but the sound I imagine as a “galloping horse” which makes a quiet appearance in the opening passage in the original and is later buried in the mix, really stands out in this extended version and makes four startling comebacks. Only minor disappointment is the somewhat abrupt ending.

For me personally, this is one track where the original mono mix is the one and only, starting with the way that the flute sounds in the intro.

That flute is EQ'd and mixed so as to cut through and make its haunting point, which it does in stunning style. Fidelity gets trumped by feel.

On all other versions, it's just a flute, and that vital, special something is missing.

Not for me. No interest in 21st century interpretations of Motown's 20th century output - being remixes by god knows whoever. Only the originals for me. Same for the seemingly endless vinyl LP re-issues. On vinyl, the originals interest me, the re-issues do not.

I agree on the haunting feel to "Reach Out", as much as I love our extended version Tom and I did for the stereo box, the 45 has that atmosphere - as does "My World Is Empty Without You" in mono.

I can't listen to any version other than the one on the Expanded Edition. Nothing sounds as good as the 2012 remix, IMHO.
