Sad to hear this. But he lived to 93, and died peacefully of natural causes. I hope I make it to 93. We should all be so lucky.

To have lived such a productive life and left your indelible mark on the world is something that is truly amazing and only achieved by a select few. His name and his body of work will ensure his imortality...RIP

His graciousness, modesty and amiability were plain to see in the SITSOM film. What a musician to have in that marvellous Motown mix. RIP Joe.

Public viewing set for Motown guitarist Joe Messina, part of iconic Funk Brothers band

A public viewing will be held Thursday in Livonia for late Funk Brothers guitarist Joe Messina.

Messina, who played on myriad Motown hits in the '60s and early '70s as part of the iconic studio band, died Monday after succumbing to kidney disease. He was 93 and had been one of the sole remaining players from the Funk Brothers' original core ensemble.

The viewing will be held 1-8 p.m. Thursday at Harry J Will Funeral Home, 37000 W. Six Mile in Livonia.

The funeral home can be reached at 734-591-3700.

Thursday's viewing is the only public event planned, Messina's family said.
