Posse: This Isn't Eddie Kendricks Singing?

My more than slightly familiar ears say this IS Eddie singing:

Or to put it differently, why would Eddie go through all this bother to specifically get behind somebody who sounds like and therefore competes against him just at a time when he is trying to confirm his own distinctive voice as a new soloist?

    Don't make no sense.

Isn't this the group that Eddie either managed or produced?

I’m pretty sure that this is not Eddie singing , but it is a group that he produced for a couple of singles in the early 1970s. And this is a nice track!

I’d say it was more Eddie trying his hand at writing and producing for another act… which perhaps ironically, he gave up shortly after this song.

hmmm, I don't read [or hear in the interview] it declared that that is not Eddie singing.
I've only read that the lead singer of Posse sounded like Eddie ....but not that that is who is definitely singing here. This could be a demo with Eddie singing that never developed further and got released years later. It sounds older than something from 1972.

Any other examples of Rick Langston's singing to compare?

Interesting posting. I don't know if anyone else noticed this about VIP 25069; it was the very last VIP 45 that was released on the VIP label. I am fortunate enough to have a copy.

I think we can now all agree that Rick Langston was indeed singling lead on Posse and not Eddie Kendricks. Here's another Rick lead with Posse. The comments are interesting below the video.

Take You Out by Posse posted above, but different comments from those with direct knowledge again verifying Rick Langston was the lead singer on their recording.

It made me curious as you mention, as lead sounds just like Eddie K. but Eddie simply was involved with the band and produced some of the tracks.

Love both sides of the Posse VIP 45, if not already there's a whole piece involving the band and Eddie K including the "Janus" issue. with a great photo of the group in the "The Complete Motown Singles" Vol 12A 1972.

    this music is top notch.

Its all very curious....why Eddie would want to promote a band to directly compete with his own Temptations.

No wonder Norman and he were clashing ....this certainly wouldn't help matters, creating and supporting a competition. Also it wasn't as if Eddie were doing this with multiple acts and they were just part of the fold. Seemed pretty explicit in its intent.

Can anyone name even one other artist who groomed another in this way, as an imitation?

Eddie had aspirations to be a songwriter, producer and lable owner. I assume looking at his career decisions he had a strong sense of purpose and a desire to control his own destiny, rather than being dictated to and "owned" by Motown. As did Marvin and Stevie.
In addition to managing and mentoring Posse , he also contracted the Young Senators to back him on his tours, and very unusually, opted to have this unknown band back him on the My People album , presumably to get away from yhe predictable Motown sound. I doubt Eddue gad the motivation, time, money or energy to want to sabotage the Temptations.

I wonder what year it was recorded.
