Just Curious -- Where Are You?

Ralph and I have wondered how far reaching Soulful Detroit is.

Please let us know, as much as you are willing to volunteer, your
country, state, province, city, etc. Just curious . . .

    Gracia, Merci, Danke and Thanks.

Swimming in the English Channel?....ha! no, I don't, 9A....nor even in The Solent, the stretch of water between this part of the southern coast and The Isle Of Wight, beyond which is the English Channel. Very few people would be strong enough to withstand the currents in either stretch of water.

As a point of reference, very shortly after leaving Southampton on 10 April 1912, RMS 'Titanic' passed Cowes Esplanade on The Isle of Wight at the start of her maiden voyage. There had been an incident there involving 'The Olympic' [sister ship of 'Titanic'] seven months before, repairs to which led to a delay in the commencement of 'Titanic's maiden voyage. It was felt by many that there was then pressure placed upon Capt. Smith to, where possible, make up for lost time...and you know the rest of that tragic story....

Long before that, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought the Osborne estate on the IOW as a private home in 1845, now open to the public to view.

Five years even prior to that date, my family's furnishing business had opened in my original home town of Lymington [in the county of Hampshire, as was Bournemouth until 1970s], twenty miles along this side of The Solent. It remained privately owned by my family until 1997. I was the fifth successive member of the family ever to work there....and am now the last surviving - !

We do have various swimming clubs here in Bournemouth...but most people are pleased to just stroll or cycle along the promenade which runs for miles directly behind the sandy beach....

And finally...if you remember ever viewing the 1980s/1990s BBC television series of 'Miss Marple' productions [based on Agatha Christie's novels, and starring Joan Hickson] many of the interior and exterior scenes were filmed on location right here in Bournemouth and Dorset.....

Wow, WGB. Can´t give you another ¨like¨ yet. How interesting. Google Maps does
not identify the Solent, just St. George´s Channel and the Celtic Sea.

You would just need to narrow the search a bit, 9A.

St G's Channel and Celtic Sea are too far to the west.

We are all to be found in the middle of the south coast [and so much smaller in size than in your own country...].

'The Solent' is small, but should come up on Google Maps.....or try 'The Solent' on Wiki... an aerial image there, showing Southampton Water beyond.....

Currently, I'm in Los Angeles, where I've been trapped for over a year due to The Covid Virus. Normally, I split my year between [[1)my house in L.A., one block from Santa Monica, [[2)my flat in The Schwabing District of Munich, Bavaria, Germany, [[3) my work/business partner's guest house, in a village in northern Denmark, on the island of Sjaeland, near Helsingør, and [[4)a house I share with my cousin in a village in the northwestern part of The Province of Noord Holland, in The Netherlands, not far from West Friesland. Each year, I also spend a month or so with my other sister and brother-in-law in West Kildonan, Manitoba, Canada.

I hope to return to Europe [[where I normally spend 9 months) as soon as I can get a booster shot with The Covid-19 vaccine adapted to recognise and work well against the recent vaccine variants.

I have not been inside a shop or restaurant since my last grocery shopping trip on March 7, 2020. We get all our food and other supplies delivered. I was not inside a building other than my sister's house and my own house for over one year. I was not within 6 feet of another Human other than my sister and brother-in-law, and their 2 grown-up children [[who only visited a few times after testing negative), for over one year. After getting the second Moderna vaccination, I have seen a doctor and had 3 eye operations, replacing both eyes' lenses and scraping residue off the top of my left retina, and I have seen my dentist for 4 teeth cleanings during that period. Otherwise I haven't been inside any other building since March 2020 [[even after becoming protected by the vaccine).

I own a 2012 Nissan. It is in brand new condition, and has only 18,000 miles on it after 10 years. I've only put 125 miles on it since early December, 2020. In Europe, I have no car - just 3 bicycles at my 3 different homes. I've worked from home, ever since I started cartooning full time in 1988, other than teaching seminars in comic book and animation storyboarding and storywriting, and layout for animation, and having a few in-person meetings with my editors and work partners. But now I'm doing all that virtually. But the public libraries where I hold my seminars have cancelled all their on-site local cultural programmes. So, I'll probably still be something of a hermit when I return to The Netherlands, Denmark and Germany, depending upon how the vaccinations work. My business and work partner in Germany has retired. So I will spend a lot less time there, as I no longer have clients there. I'll just spend a few weeks twice a year there from now on, visiting friends. But, I still have work in The Netherlands and Denmark, plus lots of friends and family in both of those places.

    Hey, Robb,

It is great to hear from you. We are so glad you are taking such precautions
regarding Covid. We have been doing much the same, but since our Pfizer
vaccinations have become effective, we have relaxed our standards a bit. We
now go bare faced into restaurants and grocery stores. That is going to come
to an end any day now, as soon as Michigan shows a resurgence. As my doctor
says, we are protected against dying from Covid, for now, but my feeling is
that anyone I unknowingly infect contributes to the strengthening of a newer
    stronger variant coming along.

I have had cataract surgery, dental surgery and various other medical treatments
and have not yet seen my doctors´ faces. We have hoarded toilet paper and washed
    groceries, for awhile.

I have posted many Google Doodles over the past several months, featuring
cartoonists, illustrators and animators and think of you every time. I have even
done one honoring Hanna-Barbera. I hope you never get recognized by the
Google Doodlers as they only seem to feature deceased individuals. :[

Take good care of yourself. You are valued by many on Soulful Detroit.

    All the best,

    Nina

    Thanks Nina,
Good luck and health to you and Ralph, too. Southern California is back over 1,000 people being infected with the virulent new variant each day. So, unfortunately, it's better to return to isolation. The good news for us Geezers is that we'll be among the first group immunised by the new booster shots [[maybe in November? - or, at worst, December). I foresee the booster regimen sort of like the one we have had for many years with The Flu. Every 9 months to a year we'll get a new one with added recognition of the most recent variants. Then we can go about our lives again, with no fear on that regard.

I don't care about getting on Google Doodles. But I don't want the notice of my death to be greatly exaggerated. Which brings me to the pre-operative eye-surgery discussions with my anesthesiologist. I never had any surgery before receiving my second Covid-19 vaccination, and so, was not used to the protocol. The anesthesilogist asked me, seemingly casually: "By the way.... what is your religion?" Completely surprised, I answered back, "Why? Do you plan on NOT BRINGING ME BACK??? - from a routine elective surgery in which you don't even put me completely out, in the first place???

    Some bedside manner, eh?

    Robb,

No one asked me my religion, but my doctors are all Jewish. My
opthalmologist was wearing a kipa [yarmulke or skull cap] to boot.
    Me? Neurotic little me?

I heard the booster vaccination is already being administered in Israel.
My doctor thinks we will be getting ours earlier, like when flu
vaccinations are available. It would be great if the two vaccinations
    could be combined.

    Nina,
My old memory doesn't work so well for recent events [[in the last 30-40 years). So, forgive me if this question to you has already been answered, because I've been curious about this for awhile now, and the subject being breached on a thread here on SDF rings a bell. From where did you get the monniker, 9A? I ask this because, when I was a little kid, I liked a detective comedy comic strip that appeared in various American Fox Features comic books in the mid-to-late 1940s, titled "Crime at 9A", or "It Happened at 9A".

    Robb,

I have asked my mother, but I don´t remember the answer. I know
that the ¨N" customarily is the initial of a deceased family member.
My Hebrew name was the same as a great grandmother, but I don´t
know where she got the name Nina.

As a child, I hated the name, because people would make jokes about my
marrying someone named ¨Clock.¨ I even remember being called ¨fina
Nina¨ in high school, which was OK. Most recently I´ve been told
if I married someone name Levin I would be Nina Levin [9/11].

Long ago, when I had AOL, I tried to use the name ¨NinaM¨ but it was
    take, so I used ¨Nina9AM.¨

WOW! I've met a lot of people in my long life who had nicknames, but I've never met anyone who had a nickname, and didn't know how they got it! You must have got it before age 3. Maybe you were born at home, in Apartment 9A?

Is there anyone still with us [[your mother, aunts or uncles) who might know, and that you can ask?

¨Nina¨ is my actual given name, with a long ¨I.¨ I never met another who
pronounced her name the same, until I lived in a dormitory in Ann Arbor,
    right on the same corridor.

I just read a commentary on the pronunciation of the name ¨Nina.¨ It seems
to vary, depending on where in the world you live. Google seems to have it
wrong, IMO. There are people who will correct the pronunciation of my own
name right after I am introduced to them. Brain must be wired for ¨Neena.¨
