"He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and the bayonets they shine
He's there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man

    Sky pilot, sky pilot
    How high can you fly?
    You can never, never, never
    Reach the sky"

Sky Pilot - Eric Burdon & the Animals

Weapon of Prayer - The Louvin Brothers [[1962)

A theme album on military/war [[Charlie Louvin was in the army at the end of WW2 and was recalled for the Korean war). I'll list the songs together here since they're all on the same album:

    The Weapon of Prayer
There's a Grave in the Wave of the Ocean
    At Mail Call Today
I Died For The Red, White and Blue
    A Soldier's Last Letter
    There's a Star-Spangled Banner Waving
    The Great Atomic Power
    A Seaman's Girl
    From Mother's Arms to Korea
    Robe of White
    Searching For a Soldier's Grave
Mother, I Thank You For The Bible You Gave

These songs are not sugar coated - for example, the young man in "From Mother's Arms to Korea" is killed on his first day on the front line, leaving a diary that his buddy finishes with "from a foxhole to a mansion on high" before it's sent home.

The Great Atomic Power is one of their best-remembered songs today, a real fire and brimstone number about the fear of nuclear war. The version on this album was a remake, I prefer the original single version from 1952 [[made just after Charlie's return from Korea):

Where Have All the Flowers Gone -- Peter, Paul and Mary [[1961)

The melody and the first three verses were written by Pete Seeger in 1955

¨Where have all the soldiers gone?
    Long time passing
Where have all the soldiers gone?
    Long time ago
Where have all the soldiers gone?
    Gone to graveyards every one
    When will they ever learn?
    When will they ever learn?´´

We Saw The Sea - Fred Astaire [[Follow The Fleet, 1936)

We joined the navy to see the world
And what did we see? We saw the sea
We saw the Pacific and the Atlantic
    But the Atlantic isn't romantic
And the Pacific isn't what it's cracked up to be

    "...They're sending me to Vietnam
I've got to fight a war
    I don't know what for
    Over there in Vietnam
I've got to leave you girl so far behind
To go fight on the front line
There's a sound of conflict in the air
    So much confusion everywhere..."
