1989 Family Feud with Dionne, Luther, Little Richard, Gladys, Vanessa

I am sure many of you have seen this before but I had not. Great quality and a fun episode featuring some of our favorites. [[I won't spoil the ending!!!)

I really enjoyed that. Back when things were still mostly wholesome.

Thanks for the post. I used to love Ray Combs era Family Feud as a small child and was very disillusioned when he died.

Yeah....... a friend of mine filled me in on his passing. And my friend also said that one of the Manhattan Transfer guys was deceased also, as well as of course Luther and Richard. Must mean that all those gals had great genes!!!

Ray Combs was let go from the show in 94, and they brought Richard Dawson back to help the ratings. After that, his marriage fell apart and his business investments failed. He was also involved in a bad car accident [[which I originally thought was the reason he wasn’t on Family Feud anymore), which left him with chronic back pain and the medical bills drove him further in debt. He ended up hosting the show “Family Challenge” on what is now FreeForm, but it did little to alleviate his financial problems and he and his wife separated. One thing led to another and he ended up in the hospital under observation. Sadly, he committed suicide by making a noose out of his bed clothes and hanging himself.

Since I was still a little child when it happened, My parents didn’t explain the details at that time. So I just figured he had another car accident. It wasn’t until I was older that I learned what really happened. Such a sad ending to such a wonderful, charismatic man.

The richard dawson era was the best for me,although i watch it today,it's not as good because steve harvey has a bad habit of talking down to the black contestants in a way that he doesn't do with the whites.

Steve is funny enough as comedians go, but on anything he does, he makes it more about him than the show. That was especially true with Little Big Shots and to a lesser degree, the pageants he hosted. As for Richard, if I were a female contestant back then, I would have NOT enjoyed the kissing. That was soooo fake.

I remember there was a cute episode when the cast of THE JEFFERSONS appeared on FAMILY FEUD. When Richard got to Marla Gibbs, he leaned in for a kiss and she jokingly said something like "Don't put your hands on me!" Then she let him kiss her cheek.

My mother saw Ray Combs in what was apparently one of his last standup spots and she said he was really funny.

By all accounts Richard Dawson wasn’t very pleasant to work with off camera [[and sometimes even on), which is why they didn’t ask him to come back when the show returned to TV. It was only after the show’s creator Mark Goodson died that they decided to give Dawson another shot. And of course Steve Harvey has also rubbed folks the wrong way on some of his shows as well.

A not so fun fact, Richard Dawson died the same date as Ray Combs but twelve years later. He also lived twice as long as Combs.
