One of the Supremes finest, most sophisticated songs from the 70’s. I would have preferred a Partners type album featuring just Mary and Sussaye. Their essentially very different sounding voices really complement each other as this song proves. They really had something.

I agree. A long time ago Susaye told me that if she had to pick a favorite song she recorded with the group, it would probably be this one. She also said that she thought Scherrie should have been able to sing some of the verses and I think that's a fair opinion. Mary does great here by herself [[with Susaye), however.

it is a great song and IMO one of Mary's stronger leads while in the group. I did always think it was a little odd to have 2 of the 3 members singing it. but oh well

A favorite 70's Supremes song. I think my favorite Mary lead vocal in the 70's is on Don't Let My Teardrops Bother You, but I like We Should Be Closer Together more as a song. I love Susaye's part in the song. It probably would have been a nice touch to include Scherrie, too.

This is one of the most sophisticated, mature songs the Supremes recorded. Although the songs they did in the 60s were popular, they were rinky-dink or bubblegum sounding compared to this!

Did you guys know that one of the HDH team [[can't remember which one) said that of all the Supremes' voices, he'd pick Mary to produce? He said there was something honest about her voice.

It was Harold Beatty. He wrote that in the 2000 box set.

I would guess there are one hell of a lot of Supremes fans who feel exactly the same!!. Why this superb song was never released as a single is one of the most deplorable music crimes in history lol. I’m convinced a remixed version would do well even today. It really is that good. Certainly one of Mary’s best.

I was listening to the superb Mary Scherrie & Susaye cd this morning realising it really has stood the test of time. Most of the songs on the album would be perfect for a 2020 remix given there are some really commercially strong songs on offer here. Does anyone know if there were any songs recorded for the album that were never included?. Any other Mary leads?.

i've asked the same thing Ollie.

I'm not aware of any other songs, though there could still be some different mixes of these tunes.

there was a RUMOR that originally Susaye didn't have a full lead on the lp, just her one verse of Sweet Dream Machine. Gordy and motown insisted she have one and so Come Into My Life was added. No idea if this is true or not. but it if is, there that could mean there was another tune planned for Side 1

If that is in fact true I’m really pleased as “Come Into My Life” is one of my favourite songs on the album.
The fact that the material still sounds fresh and innovative today makes me think the album was ahead of its time. Aside from the couple of disco numbers, perhaps just a little to sophisticated for that period.
Listening to some of the anaemic girl groups of modern times makes you really appreciate
just what this grouping of Supremes really had.
I’m guessing there must surely be some alternate versions in the can, but i won’t be holding my breath in anticipation of an expanded release any time soon.
Regarding CITML, another Susaye and Mary lead might have proved interesting.

the high notes melting into the synthesizer on Come are part of the amazing experience. mary wouldn't have been able to those - her voice is perfect for the smokey sultry lead of We Should Be Closer.

the Hollands and Warren did a great job of identifying the strengths of each lady. the 3 big disco numbers were all Scherrie's of course but it's great to hear her on Dream and Tied Down. those aren't as formulaic and there's really an opportunity for her to be much more creative with her vocals and interpretation.

the album is just perfect. If i had to make any changes i'd probably cut the orgasm moans from You Are Heart. they're not really needed.

now one complaint is that we never got any proper 12" mixed of the disco tunes. LYG is one of my very fav sup songs [[regardless of lineup) and a longer mix would be great!

Agee that each lady plays to her strengths on this album. LYG is terrific and should have been a huge breakthrough for them.
It has to be said, the moans on YATHOM are indeed a ‘tad OTT.. It sounds like the soundtrack to a cheap porn movie lol.
Being picky, the only other thing i would change is to slightly slow down the pace on “Love I Never Knew”. It seems to run away with itself.
The cover pic is brilliant, perhaps their best ever.
I can see why Berry Gordy was impressed when he heard some some of the playbacks.

Blame Donna Summer and "Love to Love You Baby" from the year before for the "moans" on "You Are the Heart of Me". After record was such a huge hit, almost every popular and active black female singer added "orgasmic" sounds to their records the following year. For instance, Aretha's "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", Mavis Staples and the Staple Singers, "Let's Do It Again", even Diana Ross' "Love Hangover". This is something the record companies tried to capitalize on at that time. I thought Mary sounded very HOT LOL!

I guess it was the trend for a short while. I don’t consider YATHOM a sexy song so to me the moaning sounds a little incongruous. There are quite a few Donna hits that i think would have suited Mary. “Bad Girls” and “On The Radio” to name but two.

That and that Latin jazz number "I Can Feel It" really started it.

Donna's "There Will Always Be You" would have been perfect for Mary.

Agreed. Also “I Will Go With You”.......The list goes on.
I think both Donna and Mary have a similar timbre to their voices though both women of course have their own individual style.

Sounds cool, but I think there is still room to be a little more creative here without losing the original vibe of the song. I’m really surprised there are no other remixes available.
Music for a warm summers night with a bottle of something cold.
The lead single that never was alas. Could have really kick started interest in that rather excellent album.
