The motown cd guide - severin browne

    This is a test.
Initially a pdf file, I don’t really know how to share it with everyone.
I plan to do this for all Motown artists.

    Here is the text :

    SEVERIN BROWNE

    Discography :
    SB.SB SEVERIN BROWNE [[1973)
SB.NI NEW IMPROVED SEVERIN BROWNE [[1974)
-------- all of Severin Browne’s tracks are included within the two albums listed above

Severin Browne relased two albums on Motown. Both were released on cd in Japan twice.
Running time of songs as indicated in OFF THE RECORD [[Bartlette) tends to show the singles versions are the same as the album versions. Unless I’m told the contrary, all we need to have the whole Severin Browne Motown input on cd are his two albums.

    « Severin Brown » [[1973)

    SB.SB.01 Stay A, track 1
    SB.SB.02 Darling Cristina A, track 2
    SB.SB.03 Snow Flakes A, track 3
    SB.SB.04 Raggedy Ann & Me A, track 4
    SB.SB.05 Skip Tune A, track 5
    SB.SB.06 Sister A, track 6
    SB.SB.07 Not Quite Time A, track 7
    SB.SB.08 There’s a Lot To Be Said A, track 8
    SB.SB.09 Just A Matter Of Time A, track 9
SB.SB.10 The All-American Boy And His Dog A, track 10

    Best cd sources :
    A. Severin Browne POCT-1970 [[Japan, 2000) as part of the « MOTOWN Rare Groove Collection »
UICY-76185 [[Japan, 2014) as part of the « Free Soul 20th Anniversary » series

I guess the 2014 cd is a straighforward release of the 2000 cd, at least as far as the mastering is concerned. My copy of the album is the POCT-1970 cd, which lasts [[28:45). Please let me know if the UICY-76185 cd has a different running time, even if it’s only for a few seconds. That might be a hint it was mastered again in 2014 – and therefore may sound superior, or inferior, or contain an alternate version somewhere.
“Stay” appears on “FREE SOUL. The classis of 70’s MOTOWN 2” [[Japan, UICY-4183, 2004) where it is a hair louder. But there’s no difference in sound quality otherwise. It is possible the 2014 cd in the Free Soul series might sound louder too. Nothing to get excited about for me.

    « New Improved Severin Brown » [[1974)

SB.NI.01 Love Notes From Denver B, track 1
    SB.NI.02 Tickle My Lips B, track 2
    SB.NI.03 Romance B, track 3
SB.NI.04 More Dreams In The Sea B, track 4
    SB.NI.05 Confessions Of A Madman B, track 5
    SB.NI.06 Love Song B, track 6
SB.NI.07 The Sweet Sound Of Your Song B, track 7
    SB.NI.08 Do, Magnolia, Do B, track 8
    SB.NI.09 Cooking School B, track 9
    SB.NI.10 Beginning To Believe B, track 10

    Best cd sources :
    B. New Improved Severin Browne POCT-1971 [[Japan, 2000)
as part of the « MOTOWN Rare Groove Collection »
    UICY-77408 [[Japan, 2014)
as part of the « Motown R&B Best Collection »

See comments for the previous album « Severin Brown » - this time, my copy [[POCT-1971) runs [[32:47).
Funny detail : the Canadian Motown logo can be seen on the front cover of both japanese CD editions of this album.

    Country type albums.
If you like Diana Ross’ “Last Time I Saw Him”, “Sorry Doesn’t Always Make It Right” or if you’re into James Taylor, then there are chances you’ll enjoy listening to these albums.

I personally find them both enjoyable ones. Now I must admit I never put them off the shelf. Or maybe once every 5 years or so.

Yes, I should have indicated this fact. Thanks! I'll update the entry.

To be complete, I post good quality scans of both cds, now that I've found out how to do.

The albums are a mid 70s singer/songwriter vein. On "New and Improved" he's backed by the band Toto.

Severin Browne has a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SeverinBrowneMusic/

Hi, if you want to hear some of Severin Browne's stuff, his entire 1974 Motown album is available on Spotify.
    Cheers. Mike

Thanks Mike, I checked out some of the tracks. Not bad.

Severin's voice reminds me of someone, but I can’t recall who. Anyone have any ideas? LOL
