    Farewell LP

I wonder what you all think of this live set, is it a good album?

Another question is , what was Diana doing when Mary performed her solos during concerts.

I believe it was recorded on the last 2 days of the engagement. Not bad wish I could hear what was cut. And Diana sang background when Mary did her solos

I thought it was great. Good selection of songs. Initially I thought that both Mary and Cindy had solos, but then realized both songs were Mary. I couldn’t understand why Mary did both. Was she being groomed to eventually take over? She should have insisted Cindy got a solo. I don’t think Diana cared one way or the other.

The album to me feels disjointed, which is probably the result of it being three performances combined into one. I think Deke Richards said it was the most difficult project he did at Motown.

Mary probably got two solos because she was going to be the only original member, and probably asked to have "Falling In Love With Love" added to the set list. I don't care for all the covers and standards, but I do love DMC's blend on "Reflections" and "Someday We'll Be Together". While Cindy doesn't have any solos, her mic is turned ALL the way up, and I love that.

I think it is a good album, almost a perfect bookend to the Copa album. It shows great growth in showmanship, IMO. But considering it is supposed to represent a last performance, many more hits should have been included, especially in place of the excessively long AQUARIUS / LET THE SUNSHINE IN.

Flo should have been on this album and made an announcement that she was ready to jumpstart a solo career.

From what I have heard, I think Diana was in great voice and her rendition of Someday we’ll be together is better than on the single.
But overall, i’m not crazy of the type of music they did on stage. To much of Broadway and not enough of Motown.

“I’m gonna make you love me”, “Love is here and now you’re gone”, “Didn’t we”, “My man”, “love child”, “the impossible dream”, “Someday we’ll be together”, Along with the Supreme medley of the early hits, This concert album is great. My favorite of their live albums.

they were on the supper /night club circuit by this point, thus all the 'standards'. and "Sunshine' was used to name drop all the celebs in the audience that night for posterity, it was a throw away, whoop it up,memento, movin on party show, plain and simple..

Too many garbage standards as usual. Making them a group with hardly any great albums.

I love the fact that there was actually a "Farewell" album recorded. Of course like many fans I would have done some things different but this was DMC final hooray recorded in time. This i how we remembered them !!! They only thing I thought offbeat was that Berry Gordy was never called to the stage.

In J. Randy Taborrelli's book on Motown, included was a photo of Mary giving Berry a kiss on stage while Diana and Cindy look on. But for whatever reason, this moment was not included on the album.

You are right, I do remember seeing that pic. As you mentioned they cut that right out of the recording.

I love the album. Didn’t We is a masterpiece by Ross. The woman owned it and made it her own.

Was it a common practice for Motown acts not to sing their own songs? What was the goal?

Completely agree. Diana manages to imbue the song with such raw emotion that it almost sounds like she is about to break down while singing it. A highlight not only of this album but of her entire career.

Motown wanted most of their artists to cross over and appeal to the Vegas and Copacabana night club crowd. As a result, their acts consisted not only of their own hits but their renditions of recent pop hits as well as MOR and Broadway standards. If you look at the set lists of many Motown live albums [[Supremes, Tops, Tempts, Pips), you'll see a mix of what I described.

I guess it was a different time back then. I don't remember seeing any acts in concert back then. I saw Motown and other acts in NYC at nightclubs, like the Copa and in Hotel nightclubs like the Empire Room of the Waldorf, and other hotels like the Americana and the Plaza. Although I was young and this was my kind of music, they also had to cater to the older nightclub crowd by singing standards and Broadway tunes. I actually enjoyed seeing some of my favorites artists singing these songs, but was a little disappointed in how they hurried through some of their hits

There were other places to see these acts, like Palisades Park or Freedom Land in shows hosted by Murry the K or Cousin Brucie but the acts usually lip synced their songs there.

all of the live albums [[the 3 originally released in the 60s plus the recent Expanded Edition versions) are fascinating windows into the history of the group. On the Meet The Sups EE there's a handful of live tracks from a very early gig at the Apollo [[You're Heart Belongs to Me, I want a guy, Time Changes things, let me go right way). Then listen to the ones included on WDOLG, More Hits, etc. The first Copa run versus the 66 Roostertail show versus Copa 67 versus Talk of Town. Remember, these girls were only in the late teens and early 20s! i mean - WOW!!! that's talent and that's growth.

as for Farewell, i think it's an excellent set for serious fans. for a more casual fan, a 1-lp version would have been sufficient. Talk of the Town is a high-quality set since it moves faster and therefore would appeal to a broader consumer base

in regards to Mary's solos, i think mary was pushing for more prominence in the shows. not that motown was grooming her to take over the group. i don't think motown ever had any interest in mary as a singer. Clearly she was under contract to them long enough for them to do something with her, if they were so inclined. IMO mary was looking to have the "new Sups" be a more balanced group and upping her role. motown was probably "sure - whatever"

there are some old posts on here from Deke discussing the recording and production of this album. apparently there is a LOT of stuff edited out. i don't know if there are many more songs but LOTS of other content. he said Mary was in "rare form" and was totally going off script. lots of ad libs, snipes, some comments that probably carried a lot more meaning than the audience realized. said it was VERY challenging to edit this set together. and during Sunshine there are a LOT more celebs that sang but wouldn't allow them to use their portion.

was just rereading his post. Here it is:

Diana Ross & The Supremes - Farewell:

I actually recorded the last 3 days, which was 5 or 6 shows. Putting that together was just short of a nightmare. I'd have one night when the girls did a great version of one of the songs, but then Mary would come off with a little 'sharply edged' quip or 2, and I'd have to get it out and then there would be a hole. So I would have to take bits and pieces from another take. If that wasn't bad enough, the audience was different and the applause was different, so I would have to go back to the first take and take the applause from a different part of the show that matched. It was crazy.

Then there was the night I had to run from the back of the room through the patrons to get backstage to stop Diana. I had just found out the announcer was late and Shelly Berger was on his way to the Casino. So, Bless her heart, Diana had decided it would be a good idea if she introduced herself. WHAT!!! I almost had a heart attack I got backstage just as Diana came out of her dressing room and a stage hand was handing her the microphone. I quickly intercepted the pass. Diana innocently thought it would be 'cool'. I just wasn't going to let her do that. Superstars DON'T introduce themselves. Sorry Di, but it would NOT have been 'cool'. Now, that was a close call.

I came so close to taking "Age Of Aquarius" out of the LP all together. If there weren't so many stars who decided to sing with Diana, I would have. However, I had to personally go to each one who got up and sang and get their permission to use their sequence on the LP. So I had to make separate tapes of each one's sequence, and get them to sign a waiver. There were more stars that performed with Diana, than you hear on the LP. Unfortunately, they didn't like the way they sounded, so they opted out, some even changed their mind at the last minute. That made putting together a final version of 'Aquarius', a serious challenge.

Then, there was the real finale: The Last Night. Mary was feeling no pain, and was in rare form as she offered up a nice collection of one liners in response to Diana's on stage dialog. Cindy, occasionally offered giggles of support whenever Mary came off with a real 'zinger'. Most of Mary's 'one liners', were little sharply barbed jabs at Diana. I soon realized I was in 'their' [[the girls) world now. It was not my place to say anything. They were going to say whatever they wanted to say, however they wanted to say it. I was just along for the ride. I'm just glad I decided to record those extra shows.

Nevertheless, for me, It was a labor of love. It was a night for the history books. It was a great time to be alive; a great time for all those people who were lucky enough to be at the Frontier in Las Vegas on January 14, 1970, when Diana Ross And The Supremes performed together for the very last time.

**Things that were said that night reflect 2 things, in my mind at least; 1) In some ways, I wouldn't doubt the girls felt Diana was about to become a Diva, and leave her "roots" behind, and 2) I'm sure there were years and years of things that were never said. So, after a little of the ol' bubbly, they just popped out.

**I have to agree with you about "Aquarius". I wish I left it off myself. It worked visually, but is tough to listen to. I know it seems to go on forever. I opened a can of worms with that one.

**As far as the Video, I don't recall coordinating anything with DCP. If Dick Clark DID shoot any footage, it was arranged independently. This is one CD, I definitely would NOT like to see an EXPANDED version get released. [[smile)

**[Celebs who didn’t give their permission to be included] Gawd, the only one I can recall right this minute is Hugh O'Brian. There were 6 or 7 altogether. Well, I don't blame them. A few couldn't carry a tune and one didn't even know the song, and a couple were a little 'toasted'. Afterall, the drinks and Champagne was flowing freely that night.

I was very excited to get this LP...a friend got it 2 weeks before me, I couldn't find it! I was in 5h grade, and DRATS meant the world to me....at the time, I loved it. At the time, I loved everything....the LP Together with the Tempts was the only thing I was shakey on.

Moving forward and a short time later...my fondness for the LP waned...Too many repeats from Talk of The Town on side 1 and the breakneck pace....and TCB was a train wreck...IGMYLM was fine....Side 2 was wonderful....Didn't We, Big Spender, Falling In Love...all great....I prefer the duet vers. of Impossible Dream from TCB, Someday of course, was essential...sooooo, these days there's not much there that pleases me....TCB has the best Stop! as a independent cut, and the best 3 song hits medley. Talk of The Town is my go to live LP...despite DR' overuse of hiccup both here and on TCB...I only like the standards on Copa...the live hit arrangements make me cringe.....the Copa band was awful....entirely too much brass, and seemingly no strings at all....IN AND OUT OF LOVE remains the only DRATS song I prefer the live version over the studio...and I HEAR A SYMPHONY from TCB comes close.

Like most Supremes recorded shows, Farewell has it's moments and it's duds and everything in between. The highlights for me were the opening number, "Love Is Here", "Gonna Make You Love Me", "My Man", "Aquarius", "Impossible Dream" and "Someday We'll Be Together". The highest point though is "Didn't We". Diana sounds absolutely fantastic. I'm so disappointed that she never [[as far as I know) recorded it.

Diana sang backup whenever Mary took the lead. I don't think a Supreme had an actual solo number in the show until Jean's "He Aint Heavy". Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I'd take a Farewell expanded.

I also really hope more live audio of the pre-"Where Did Our Love Go" Supremes comes to light.

I would certainly buy it but I don't know how often I would play it, especially since most likely, the set list is the same and variations in phrasing probably are few.

A while back, Rhino Handmade released a 4cd set of Aretha and King Curtis' complete Fillmore West recordings. I listened to the whole thing the day it arrived and as much as I love Aretha, it was a lot to intake. I would think the complete FAREWELL recordings would affect me the same way.

I always wondered about the 4 CD Aretha/Curtis set. I never bought it. I wasn't really fond of Aretha's live recordings, at least not the ones I had heard before this one. I believe the set was 4 different concerts but largely the same music on each, wasn't it? I probably would do the same, listen to it once or twice and then put it away. I have seen it listed for very high prices of Ebay and Amazon, but unless you look at the "completed listings" in Ebay, you really can't tell what an item actually sold for. I always wonder how much these sellers are hanging onto something like the Tommy Good or Brenda Holloway CDs, waiting for someone to pay the high price they're asking for them.

Interesting. There's a 2-CD version of the Aretha Fillmore set. That might be the way to go, although it doesn't include King Curtis' set, it does include some alternates of Aretha's set on Disk 2. Very reasonably priced as well.

actually My Man and Didn't We were Diana solo numbers. M and C are not on stage for those.

in the MSS at Caesar's Palace nearly 1/3 of the show run time is solo numbers. If i had come to hear the group, i would have been sorely disappointed that so much time was developed to solo singing [[never mind the fact that probably most people at the Caesar's show were disappointed since the overall show was a mess)

Yes, for the most part, it was the same set list each night except one song, MIXED UP GIRL, was only performed during the first show. And I think REACH OUT AND TOUCH might have only been performed on the last night.

For her early solo albums, Diana Ross, should have recorded "Didn't We" with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as part of the song, as in ANMHE.

Her vocals on this song are awesome on "The Farewell, LP. Missed opportunity.

Michael Masser, later on, producing the vocal, could have made this a hit song for Diana Ross!

Overall her vocals are great and she performed with impressive dynamics. « Didn’t » we is a highlight here, better than what I’ve heard from Sinatra or Streisand.
It’s a pitty they included to many Broadway songs that are not suited to her voice.

i would most certainly be interested in an EE version of this show. however i doubt we'll get it or at least seriously doubt we'll get too much of the craziness in the extras. Andy, Harry and George would never put something out there that "diminishes" the legend of the supremes or the girls. Based on Deke's posts, sounds like Mary was venting some feelings with her zingers and snipes. and given today's crazy-ass fans, i'm sure people would use this to bash one another.

Damn it Sup! Why didn't you make some snarky remark about the obvious Diana solos on the damn album we're discussing?! I had just posted about "Didn't We". I swear my brain is refusing to work at full capacity.

I can't speak about Jean's other solos, but "He Aint Heavy" should've been recorded by Motown and put on an album in it's live version. Jean tears that song up. Of course by the time the Jean catalog rolls around, I'm less of a Supremes fan and more of a Jean fan. So truth be told, I don't need Mary or Cindy [[or even Lynda) on an album cut or a live one. Just give me Jean and I'm good.

I guess by the time of MSS, they figured all three were already singing solos, even in the background, might as well give them official solos.

lolol no i totally agree with you on Didn't We. Diana sounds wonderful. it's definitely a highlight of the show and could have fit beautifully as a track on several of her solo lps.

Totally agree. I think a studio version would have been unearthed by now if such a thing existed. Such a lost opportunity.

Oddly enough, the Vandellas recorded a studio version of the song in 2/1970, as well as E. Kendricks 12/70, and Joe Harnell in 8/69.
Did the Supremes only perform this song during their Farwell tour?

Mary wrote that the FAREWELL concerts in Vegas were the only time that Diana got two solos so I assume that was the only time she did it. I think her solo usually was MY MAN.

there was a discussion on here a year or two ago about the DRATS shows. when did they sort of stop the TOTT show lineup and when did they go to the Farewell format. was there a show inbetween the two? in reading some reviews from late 68/early 69, sounds like they incorporated TCB as their new opening instead of the Symphony medley. and of course they brought Love Child and Shame into the shows, IGMYLOM too. would assume the composer and sign were done a few times but then dropped.

when did mary start doing Can't take my eyes? when did they do a full Diana solo? or when did Sunshine get put in?

I've seen at least one review of their 1969 Waldorf-Astoria engagement and a lot of seemed to be the like FAREWELL set list, right down to the T.C.B. opener. I don't think much special was done for the FAREWELL engagement other than adding SOMEDAY and I guess, DIDN'T WE.

I think MY MAN was also done during this engagement, as the story goes that was when Jay Weston saw the group and thought Diana could star as Billie Holiday in his upcoming film.

Not sure when Mary started doing CAN'T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU. Maybe after the TOGETHER album was released? The concert arrangement is similar to that on the recording. I've also seen some onstage photos of DMC sharing a mike, with Mary in the middle. I assume they are doing that song. They have the same hairstyles as when they hosted Hollywood Palace for the first time in early 1969 so maybe it was put into the act then.

I’m very surprised how many of you saw quite a lot of good things in this album. Certainly Didn’t We was a highlight but the album wasn’t a big hit and it sure contained a lot of filler. But it is a historical documentation of the end of an era

The reason why I like it is because of the great singing for “Didn’t we”, “My man”, “The impossible dream”. I like the fact that the early hits were put in a medley and the newer big hits were performed, “Love child”, “I’m gonna make you love me”, “Someday we’ll be together”. It showed the growth of their songs acknowledging the cute early hits by putting them in a medley, and then featuring the full length versions of their latest hits.

i rarely listen to is as a full album. while i enjoy and appreciate it, the studio versions of the hits are absolutely superior. some of the "filler" finds its way into playlists - Big Spender, Falling in Love, Didn't we.

if i really wanted to listen to a live set of the Sups though, i'd probably go with the '66 Roostertail show. or one of the bootlegs of the 70s group live

For being the LAST DRATS performance, too much emphasis was put on "showtunes" and not enough on the expansive Motown catalog. Only 9 "hits" were included, 4 being part of a medley. "LOVE IS HERE" is an odd choice, when others like HANGING ON, HURRY LOVE, and HAPPENING were left off. Certainly their first #1 WDOLG should have been included.

^ yeah i think it's clear that the girls were simply doing their latest show. and the show was not constructed or intended as a "farewell" or career recap. Other than Diana saying this is the final performance, this show could have been any other show for them.
