Phil Spector - Part J - "Walls & Walls Of Soundalikes"

[Introductory notes taken from "A Wall Of Soundalikes [[1)" CD booklet.]

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that's true, Phil Spector must be the most flattered record producer there ever was -- which he probably is! Soon after hitting #1 with his very first record in 1958 -- "To Know Him Is To Love Him" by his group The Teddy Bears -- Spector turned his attention to production. He studied his craft under Lester Sill and Lee Hazlewood before moving to New York to work as an apprentice to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. In 1961, he produced Top Ten hits for Curtis Lee, Ray Peterson, and The Paris Sisters.

Later that year, he formed his Philles label and set about defining a record producer's role, initially with The Crystals. By 1964, his roster of hit acts also included Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans, Darlene Love, The Ronettes, and The Righteous Brothers. His sessions at Gold Star Studios in L.A. became legendary for their extravagance. Using massed voices, an army of musicians, and cavernous tape echo, Spector's massive productions possessed a unique aural identity that would become known as the Wall Of Sound. It would also become much imitated, eventually spawning a genre of its own.

Here, in the following 3 CD volumes spanning the years 1963 through 1969, are 74 examples of that "Spector Sound" genre -- some sublime, some mediocre, but all fascinating -- a veritable "Wall Of Soundalikes".

This thread includes the following Various Artists CD's:

    1) "Phil's Spectre [[1): A Wall Of Soundalikes" [[ACE CDCHD 978)

    2) "Phil's Spectre 2: Another Wall Of Soundalikes" [[ACE CDCHD 1059)

    3) "Phil's Spectre 3: A Third Wall Of Soundalikes" [[ACE CDCHD 1149).

    4) Additional "Walls Of Soundalikes" not included in the above ACE sets.

[NOTE: Producer Marshall Leib was one-third of the Teddy Bears who recorded Phil's "To Know Him Is To Love Him". It's clear that Marshall had been paying close attention to Phil's method of overdubbing, as, by the early-to-mid '60s, he had the "Darlene Love" sound down pat!]

    [[Barry Mann - Cynthia Weil)
    Producer: Bill Medley
    Label: Verve [[1967)
    https://youtu.be/qpwqSQKfm-E

[[NOTE: "Soul And Inspiration" was originally slated to be the Righteous Brothers follow-up to "Lovin' Feeling" on Philles, but a disagreement between Phil and composer Barry Mann prevented the song's composition from being completed in time. This is why Phil handed the writing of the Righteous Brothers' second Philles single over to Gerry Goffin & Carole King who came up with "Just Once In My Life". Upon leaving Philles, Medley persuaded Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil to complete "Soul And Inspiration" which became The Righteous Brothers' first hit on Verve Records in 1966.]

    https://youtu.be/04jdLZYKPDM

[NOTE: "Known as Carol Connors, movie-songwriter extraordinaire, back in 1958 she was known as Annette Kleinbard, lead singer on The Teddy Bear's "To Know Him Is To Love Him". In the early '60s, she changed her name to Carol Connors and pursued a songwriting and solo singing career, establishing herself in the car-and-bike song genre with hits like The Rip Chords' "Hey Little Cobra". With Marshall Leib of The Teddy Bears in the producer's chair, Carol made a belated attempt to capture the Spector sound with "My Baby Looks, But He Don't Touch".]

[NOTE: "I Can't Make It Alone" was written specifically for the Righteous Brothers. Both members of that duo did indeed record solo versions of the song in 1968, with Bill Medley registering a small hit with his, while Bobby Hatfield's remained unreleased.]

Like that hit, "Close Your Eyes" by Bonnie on Warner Brothers the following year was produced by Jerry Riopelle. Charlotte struggled for years to make it in the music business. She died in the mid-'70s, just as she seemed on the verge of succeeding as a songwriter at Motown."

[PERSONAL NOTE: At Motown? Is that something I should have known but didn't? Bonnie's association with Motown is news to me.]

Yes: George Harrison's All Things Must Pass LP [[featuring "My Sweet Lord") is steeped in Phil Spector's "Wall Of Sound" [[as it should be since Phil co-produced the album with George).

Also, Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run". 'The Boss' has said many times that his breakthrough single was meant to combine the lyric style of Bob Dylan, the singing style of Roy Orbison & the "Wall Of Sound" of Phil Spector.

And The Shangri-Las also recorded a version of The Goodies' Spector influenced "The Dum-Dum Ditty" [[on the Shangri-Las 65! LP).

You're welcome, Motown Eddie. And thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm throughout my Phil Spector project. We're still not quite finished. There will definitely be one more -- possibly two -- Philles installments left to come.

In fact, this very thread will include 3 photos. Kenny tried to post them for me but there was a glitch of some kind. They just wouldn't post [[which has happened before). He'll try again later tonight when he has the time.

Thank you very much, Heikki! I'm glad you've been enjoying it! As a kid of 11, in 1962, Phil was my first musical hero thanks to The Crystals' "He's A Rebel" 45 and LP. It didn't take long before Philles became my first favorite record label. After all these years, I still get the same thrill from those records whenever I hear Ronnie, Lala, or Darlene, as I'm sure you do as well! Like Motown, those fantastic Spector productions on Philles were built to last!

This might be a good time to mention that the "Spectorius" label was one of Abner Spector's and had nothing to do with Phil Spector.

Hi 144man! Yeah, that's why I pointed out that Abner Spector is no relation to Phil. But the Spectorious label? My source lists "On The Spanish Side" as being on the Tuff label. In fact, here's an eBay photo of it.

Onto a subject of great importance, now.

I see Brian Wilson on Spector's right and on his far left Mike Love and Bobby Hatfield [[of the Righteous Brothers).

Who's the good looking guy to Mike Love's right? It looks a little like Carl Wilson, but I don't remember Carl ever being that slim.

It wouldn't surprise me if some wouldn't have had the nerve to name their label "SPECTORIOUS" during the dawning of the age of ..... Cool name actually

Ya a lot of scrofulous cashing in going on!! Imagine even calling your act THE WALL OF SOUND !!

Gary you've said a lot about the resistance by the DJs to play Phil's records because of payola requests not being returned , and also Sonny Bono reporting their feeling that his sound had gotten a little stale, but I don't think you've mentioned the huge number of knock-offs [[ or maybe you have and I've forgotten) that were floating around . No wonder the radio stations were feeling fatigue!!
This, to me , explains more about his battle than the payola angle does , and what Phil was up against.

    Cheers!

Down, boy! Ha! That's definitely not Carl Wilson. I got out my CD booklet to see if there's a front-cover photo credit. Lo and behold, there is! However, it credits everyone EXCEPT the guy you're asking about in the 3rd panel, and the guy standing behind Brian in the first panel. Apparently they're just fans, or members of John Q. Public who just happened to be standing in line at a hot dog stand. Who knows? In case you were wondering, the guy [[obscured) wearing shades behind Phil is Jack Nitzsche.

Hey Boogie! The record business of the '60s was dog-eat-dog -- anything to get ahead at the other guy's expense. Right or wrong, that's how it was, and probably still is, although record labels no longer possess the power they once had, as many of today's artists choose to sell their own recordings on their own website.

Good point you made there, John. At the time, I wasn't aware of all of the Wall-Of-Soundalike tracks having been released at the time. I knew of some, but nothing like what was released in these 3 CDs in this thread. I guess the radio D.J.'s would get tired of Phil's "sound". But, how many of these tracks actually got airplay is the question. I think it's safe to say that very few of them, if any, became hits. If they didn't receive airplay, I'm not sure how the D.J.'s could have gotten tired of the sound. But, again, that's pure speculation on my part.

Cheers right back at 'cha! Glad you're having fun with it! Some of these Spector soundalikes are really hot! [[The Bonnets, The Satisfactions, Alder Ray, Sharon Marie, etc. And so many more!)

Gotta add this Spector soundalike to the list.

PEGGY MARCH - "Watch What You Do With My Baby" [[RCA 1964):
    https://youtu.be/KbOqoEBglIQ

A perfect girl-group record with a shuffle beat and underlying baritone saxes! It was calling my name from afar! And that sax solo in the instrumental break is hot! Why it wasn't a hit is beyond me. Had I heard it on the radio back in the day, my skid marks would still be seen in the record store's parking lot to this day! [[BTW, by the time "Watch What You Do With My Baby" was released in 1964, Miss March was no longer billed as Little Peggy March. In fact, have you seen her in later years? Catch the before-and-after photos contained in the above audio link!)

Or, if you prefer, the superior [[to my ears) Mono version:

You can say that again, John! The Castanets' record is a direct rip-off of The Crystals' "Then He Kissed Me" -- minus the magic that Phil gave The Crystals' original. Plus, no girl-group lead could EVER sing that kind of record like Lala Brooks did. She'll own that song until the end of time.

Still, it's amazing how many producers and their respective girl groups jumped on the Spector-esque bandwagon, hoping to cash in on the "Wall Of Sound". Some came perilously close, but few equaled Phil's REAL deal.

that is a beautiful record Gary . Thanks for sharing . No surprise I see Jack Nitzsche 's name attached to it ...explains a lot. This could be an example where the record deserved to hit ...but the programmers listened and said , "oh no , not another one of those sounding records" .... maybe . Then tossed onto the growing 'Wall' reject stack to be lost forever ......

Really nice, that one takes the cake all right....did you really think Iwouldn't say that

The DJ's rejecting The Cake as just another one of THOSE "Spectoresque" records may have been part of it, and we can't forget that the British Invasion knocked many of the American Girl Groups off the charts. What's weird is that The Cake's Spectorized records weren't released until 1967 -- AFTER the Girl Group era. By then, Motown had hit hard and strong. You would think that the DJs might have been less anti-Spector by then. The Cake's "Baby It's Me" is a really great record that deserved a chance, unlike the rip-off by The Castanets which was clearly attempting to rob The Crystals masterpiece in a second-rate way. I guess we'll never know the rhyme nor the reason for such failures.

If you think that "Baby It's Me" 'took the cake', here ya go, John -- have another slice!

Fun to hear the influence Spector had on Motown , including Smokey!

love them castanets !!! and the cold crescendo ending.

Amazing this collection when put together was able to procure the rights to these titles including some from Motown. I wonder if there were some others that they wanted to include but couldn't ?

Hi John! Yeah, Motown liked Phil Spector, and Phil liked Motown -- especially the Four Tops. And especially the tune "A Love Like Yours [[Don't Come Knocking Every Day)" which Phil recorded not only on Tina Turner but on a duet with Cher & Nilsson as well.

Who knows what went on behind the scenes as far as which tracks they could secure and why they couldn't secure others? I remember when Motown was preparing to release the extensive "Complete Motown Singles" CD boxed sets, there were a couple volumes near the end of the series that were temporarily held up due to copyright permissions. I'm guessing that greed on the part of the song's owner plays a big part in it.
