Phil Spector - Part F - "Apple Records"

In 1969, when Phil Spector was launching his A&M productions, The Beatles began sessions for an album they hoped would restore a more straightforward approach to their music. Their recent singles, "Get Back" and "Lady Madonna", had already turned them in that direction.

By 1970, however, The Beatles were in disarray. Paul had outgrown the group and was working on his first solo album; John had just released "Cold Turkey", following "Give Peace A Chance" which set the wole world singing; Ringo had made the "Sentimental Journey" album which could only have only been intended as a present for his parents; and George, although "Something" had been a huge success, still seemed restricted to Beatles' B-sides and two cuts per album.

Given the working title "Get Back", sessions for the new album proved difficult as the individual Beatles continued to move toward separate careers. The sessions dissolved into dissension, with John and Paul at each other's throat, and the unfinished tapes were deemed unworthy of release.

Phil Spector, whose relationship with The Beatles had been maintained through intermittent exchanges of congratulation over the years, had been recommended by The Beatles manager, Allen Klein, who was also a friend of Phil Spector, to undertake the task of preparing the "Get Back" tapes for release. The resulting album, "Let It Be", proved to be The Beatles' final package of new material, meeting with a barrage of criticism from the rock press and Beatles fans alike, accusing Spector of ruining The Beatles sound. The track, "The Long And Winding Road", received the most outrageous criticism of Spector's work. Deemed as "mushy and over-produced" by some critics, the record boasts a bigness that seems fitting for the group's farewell release. The original demo, which used a piano to create a scaling effect, was greatly improved upon by the addition of an orchestra and string passages. Spector combined these with a chorus that could easily stand in for a heavenly host.

Despite less-than-enthusiastic reviews for Phil's production, the album sold several million copies. Harrison and Lennon were sufficiently impressed to request Phil's services for their first solo efforts. Their results were impressive as well. In hindsight, those who have since heard the pre-Spector versions of the material appearing on various bootlegs over the years, know that he salvaged an otherwise unmarketable product and should be commended for it.

[NOTE: The above intro from Jack Fitzpatrick's "Collecting Phil Spector" and Richard Williams' "Out Of His Head: The Sound Of Phil Spector".]

Thanks again for all the info on Phil Spector's production work. I'm sure you're next [[and final step) in this project will be the releases on Warner/Spector as well as the work Phil with other artists [[such as the Ramones).

You're most welcome, Eddie. You're partly right -- my next Phil Spector installment will be the Warner/Spector releases, but it will be far from over. Following Part G -- Warner/Spector -- will be Part H -- "Phil Spector International" -- which will be huge in content. I may need a couple weeks to complete that one, as it includes not only expanded reissues of Philles product [[which, of all of Phil's productions, is closest to my heart) as well as new recordings. I'm seriously considering including photos of each Phil Spector International LP. [[Unfortunately, the more I include, the longer it will take.) After that will be Part I [[i or eye!) -- later productions by The Ramones, The Paley Brothers, etc. Still more to come after that. It's far from over!

You're right; I forgot all about the Phil Spector International releases! I had the Echoes Of the '60s LP on that label. Looking forward to your next installments.

Eddie, Phil released several Philles Various Artists compilations on PS International. They'll all be featured along with Darlene Love's first-ever [[Philles) LP and The Ronettes' Greatest [[Philles) Hits -- both on PS International.

Most interesting. John picks a Spector written song and gives it the Spector treatment . What do you make of it Gary? And I see you list it as a bonus track...so it wasn't included on the original LP release?

I like the intro to this a lot, and vocally at times I hear of all things , Prince!! It's good overall , but I find that repetitive sax blow over used to the point of distraction.

John, on the back of my CD, "To know Her Is To Love Her" is listed as a bonus track. I'm afraid those Beatles-related tracks are new to me. I only bought 'em because Phil produced ''em. I played them only once and marked the tracks that I liked, and never played them again.

    Apple 2995 [[Released 11/1970)
    GEORGE HARRISON
    "My Sweet Lord"

    b/w
    "Isn't It A Pity"
    [[G. Harrison)
Producers: George Harrison & Phil Spector

Not sure why they combined the two strongest cuts for a single release instead of letting each run as singles on their own . Perhaps the two are too similar to stand on their own? , or rather their strength as a one-two punch better guaranteed their success [[ #1 Billboard Hot 100).

I prefer ISNT IT A PITY , a song John Lennon nixed as an earlier Beatles composition.

I'm remembering now that I had this 3 record set back then, not sure why , a pretty extravagant purchase, a three-record set . I know there was more music on it than I needed to hear, and I gravitated to the obvious sides to play. Never at the time , did I understand that Phil Spector was involved [[ if i even knew who he was at the time??), I learned this years later.

Now I realize the wonderful build-up this song generates over its seven minute run , and the fullness of its instrumentation and vocalization are due to him .

Well, John, I've never been a big Beatles fan, but I must admit that some of those tracks that Phil produced on them were not bad -- especially tracks like George Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity" which is really very pretty. Unfortunately, it set the tone for all of Phil's 70's productions which were all SLOW -- taken at a funereal pace -- each one seemingly slower than the one before. But you're right -- pairing up "My Sweet Lord" with "Isn't It A Pity" was wasting what could have been two separate A-sides.... unless they felt that "Isn't It A Pity" was too slow for AM/FM Pop radio? Just a guess on my part.

Gary, you don't find much to savor in that vast and diverse Beatles catalogue eh?

Regarding their shared single release, Apple took great care to make the preferred side ambiguous , I've posting the MY SWEET LORD side's image of the picture sleeve and can't find the other side to exhibit, but its exactly the same except of course it reads ISNT IT A PITY instead.

However how could they hope that these radio stations would play on a regular basis a song lasting over seven minutes [[!), as it was pressed on the single, taking up the same amount of air time as two other hits. That's a risky station changer by listeners too impatient to hear it out. Why they didn't edit it , ? , well I don't see how they could've without compromising it. Cashbox broke the two songs apart , saying ISNT IT A PITY got the airplay equal to an under top 40 release [[ with MY SWEET LORD listed as #1)
Canada however apparently listed the #1 side there as ISNT IT A PITY.

All the songs on ALL THINGS MUST PASS were written at least in part by Harrison [[ none getting a Spector writing credit) except for one written entirely by someone else , Bob Dylan's IF NOT FOR YOU , the song that would soon initiate Olivia Newton-John's long running career.

No, Boogie, I was never a Beatles fan. To me, it was long-haired, hippie drug music. For the most part, I was strictly into Soul music -- with heavy emphasis on Philles and Motown. Since then, I've learned to appreciate an occasional Beatles song here and there, but, if given a choice, I'll take Phil's and Motown's girl groups ANY day.

You speak of "Isn't It A Pity's" long playing time preventing airplay. Don't forget, back then, FM radio was gaining stature. LP tracks were getting longer and longer, and those tracks were getting airplay. Even AM radio was playing The Beatles' "Hey Jude" which was timed at over 7:00 minutes. Phil and George may have been purposely hoping for a two-sided hit by placing "Isn't It A Pity" on the B-side of "My Sweet Lord".

Gary you make a very good point about HEY JUDE already setting the stage for longer songs . I'd forgotten that it was that length. I'd say at the time , Bakersfield only had one top 40 formatted station KAFY [[It was much more fun in the seventies when KERN Radio came in to compete and they battled for ratings) and in those days you pretty much let the station run in the background with whatever it played.
I suspect George Harrison felt that ISNT IT A PITY wouldn't hold up on its own as a radio song, if left long or especially if edited down to something less dramatic, so it's only chance for any decent amount of AirPlay would be to piggyback it on the back of MY SWEET LORD, and if that was the game plan I'd say it was quite a successful ploy.

Boogie, back in the 1960s, when I was growing up in western NY state, there was an AM radio station in Newark, NY [[nowhere near where I lived, and I forget their call letters). I don't think we were even able to receive their signal, yet, every week, they would publish a list of that week's top 50 [[or top 100) records for the week including new releases entering their chart for that week. It was printed on long, legal-size paper, and was on a different light-colored pastel each week to differentiate it from the previous week's list. It was a super-cool service they provided, and their radio station would drop off a pile of copies at certain local record stores in my area. I'm not sure whether radio stations in other cities were providing the same promotional service, but for record-buying fans like us, it was right up our alley. I used to make it a point to pick up a new copy whenever possible. Did any of your local AM radio stations have a public service list like this back in the day?

If I were more savoy I'd post the actual visual [[hello Kenny !) and my computer is not coming out of deep sleep mode 😫 So I'm stuck using my phone.
But love looking att this playlist and relishing how diversified the music was even in hillbilly Bakersfield. Music styles were much more intergrated back then which might surprise some.

Glad you were able to give that list a review Gary . Did you like I BEG YOUR PARDON back then ?I believe that is THE song that made me pause and realize country music twernt that bad !!

No, John, "Rose Garden" didn't trip my trigger. It was too country for my soul-oriented tastes at the time. I didn't get into Country until what they were calling the "New Hot Country" of the 1980s, '90s, and early 2000s. It was the perfect blend of Pop, R&B, and Country all blended into one. Did you like it?

I've been trying to Google that 1960s AM radio station in Newark, NY, to find out its call letters and to see if I could find an example of their weekly printed record surveys but to no avail. It's as though it never existed.

Hi Gary . I guess everyone's got their own frame of references when it comes to golden eras for music and artists. I locked into country around 1973 and so by the time the eighties progressed, new artists seemed like wannabees or pretenders, with exceptions of course like Vince Gill who comes to mind, and i'm probably not being fair because I just didn't give the new breed much thought. [[I found garth brooks to be silly). We play country at work and it mostly goes in one ear and out the other , as i've heard about the drinkin' and the pickup trucks a hundred times before. Lady Antibellum seems like the one stand out.
So around 1973 I started tuning into Buck Owen's KUZZ radio station and started listening to country, hearing one latest song to the next by all these artists I knew little of, and got excited about new releases by certain artists as I got familiar with them Still listened to Top 40 and soul stations out of LA and Baja California, but now eagerly made room for this genre as well.
I loved Conway Twitty , George Jones/ Tammy Wynette, newcomers like Gary Stewart, Charlie Rich, and Willie Nelson [[ BOXCAR WILLIE caught my attention) oh too many to mention, but also a young artist who really caught my fancy , Tanya Tucker. I started going to country concerts, and when Tanya came to town , I hung out afterwards , imagining she might be looking for someone to show her how a good time could be had in Bakersfield. LOL.
There were plenty of fringe artists too, not getting played much , if at all, on KUZZ, John Denver, Eagles, CCR, Linda Ronstadt , Emmy Lou Harris....

I would be interested in what country artists caught your attention Gary ? And please don't find me overly dismissive. I honestly didn't pay them much mind to have an opinion.

Well, Boogie, I've gotta warn you -- you're asking me about one of my many musical genres which are near and dear to me. Gary this is a big assignment !!I can say that listening through , I def like them more than not. Didn't know that Rodney Crowell sounds pretty good! Of course the Juice Newton song is the one I knew already. When I was inventorying records at Tower Records in SF back when that was popular, I heard someone say "there's Juice Newton. " and there she was in the middle of the store checking out her section [[ to see if it was well stocked, I imagine lol!)

    Gary ,
I'm continuing to learn about the Spector phenomenon through your material here as time allows. Thanks so much and good job on such a grand assignment .

Another thing I'm enjoying are the fringe things I come upon along the way as well. For instance concerning John Lennons WHATEVER GETS YOU THROUGH THE NIGHT, a song that was developed post the Spector/Lennon projects , but while reading about their works on Apple Records , I discovered that the song that influenced Lennon's WGYTTN was , of all curious things, George McCraes ROCK YOUR BABY !! Never would I have come up with that on my own , it was only while reading about Lennon/Apple/Spector . But its the very kind of thing I love to learn about ....so thank you !
The connection between the two is three times removed by the final version , but you can certainly hear its influence here, in this preliminary run :

    good stuff , right ?

    wiki:

The music was inspired by the number one single at the time, "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrae.[4][5] Although the released track bears little resemblance, the inspiration is more apparent on the alternative version released on John Lennon Anthology.

Hi John! I'm tickled pink that you're having so much fun with the Spector threads -- especially the Apple years! As a reminder, however, I specialize in Phil's 1960s Philles era with The Crystals, The Ronettes, and Darlene Love. The early '70s Apple stuff is pretty much Greek to me. I bought it because it was partly Phil, but I've rarely ever played it enough to know it and comment on it. The only exception on Apple for me is Ronnie Spector's "Try Some, Buy Some" which I love, despite its title promoting drugs [[or as it would seem). And I also love "Tandoori Chicken".

John Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" definitely has a George McCray, speeded-up "Rock Your Baby" feel in its roots, but it also reminds me of another song of which I can't identify. There's something about the song that I do like. It would be interesting to hear what Phil would have done with it had he lent it his magical touch.

I think Phil's influence on John is in there, hyper and upbeat.

Maybe this is the song you are reminded of?

Remember when that show was actually fun to watch? Boy that was along time ago .

I've got to get back to some of Phil's sixties stuff ....

Nope, John, the Saturday Night Live Theme isn't what WGYTTN is reminding me of, although I do like the SNL theme a lot. [[And, yes, the earlier SNL casts were hilarious with Jane Curtain, Gilda Radner [[Roseann Rosanadanna), John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, etc. Thanks to YouTube, I've discovered some of the later cast members who are really funny like Bill Hader and Fred Armisen [[who always get each other to laughin'), and Rachel Dratch as "Debbie Downer at Disney World" in which Jimmy Fallon gets Rachel Dratch and the entire cast to laughing making it [[for me) the funniest SNL skit ever!

    "Debbie Downer At Disney World"

And "The Kissing Family" with Bill Hader, Ben Armisen, and Kristen Wiig. Funny Stuff!

Back to John Lennon's WGYTTN, it reminds me of a Disco song but I can't think of which one. It'll come to me later in the shower when it's too late to matter! Who ever dreamed we'd hear a Disco-sounding track from John Lennon!

Let me know if you think of the disco song. I'm curious.
That Debbie Downer stuff is hilarious, thanks for the morning laugh! That other one I couldn't watch though . Yech!!

This one is always a go to for a chuckle for me:

Boogie, I KNEW you'd love Debbie Downer "At Disney World"! Priceless!!!

Sorry you couldn't stomach "The Kissing Family". The best part is a non-kissing part from 3:00-3:53 where Bill Hader [[over to the right with his arm around Kristen Wiig) gets the father figure in green sweater - Fred Armisen -- to laughing! Those two are ALWAYS breaking character by laughing! Go on! Give it a whirl! It'll do ya good!!!

I've seen the skit with Adam Sandler, David Spade, and Chris Farley. In fact, caught it on You-Tube again recently. David Spade looks especially believable and attractive in drag!

John, I still can't think of what Disco song WGYTTN reminds me of.

I love Gilda Radner . How about you Gary? She must be my all-time favorite female comedian :

It does my heart good to picture the degree of love found between her and Gene Wilder.

My all-time favorite comedians will always be Lucy Ricardo and Phyllis Diller. But, yeah, John, I loved Gilda Radner -- especially her Roseanne Rosannadanna character! I remember her doing a skit in which she was on TV advertising her latest hits collection on K-Tel in which she was lip-syncing and occasionally messing up the lyrics! Funny stuff! And another one I remember fondly was another supposed TV commercial for which she was advertising super-tight jeans. She was hilarious and so undeserving of the damned cancer that got her. And, yes, she and Gene Wilder shared a very special love. So tragic and sad. Gonna watch your Gilda video now

Sure, Boog, I remember many of those Gilda skits. As shown briefly near the end of your video, I especially loved the recurring skit where she and Bill Murray were dating, and Jane Curtain played Gilda's nerdy mother who was always serving them Tang!

so funny , serving them Tang!!

Gary , I'm going to post this here , in the Apple section because here is an unlikely early connection between Spector and The Beatles. We all know The Beatles' infamous remaking of the Isley Bros. TWIST AND SHOUT.

Well how about this, the original release of TWIST AND SHOUT as produced by ......... an emerging Phil Spector :

It all goes 'round and 'round

You like that, John? True, it's a known fact that Phil had a fairly successful string of hits on various record labels before he started Philles. But, to my ear, they didn't sound anything like the Phil Spector that I quickly grew to know and love via Philles Records. I did love The Teddy Bears, of course. [[I got the "To Know Him IsTo Love Him" 45 for Christmas 1958 when I was 7!). And I liked the Paris Sisters. And, of course, Connie Francis' "Second Hand Love" is among my favorites. But that's about it. Phil's R&B stuff on Atlantic was too raw for me. I couldn't identify with it. I have an entire CD of Phil's Atlantic productions but they don't sound at all like him. You know who probably does appreciate them is Robb K. He's really into early R&B. Am I right Robb?!!!
