Motown Unreleased 1969 artist and track list.

Again, no issuance on compact disc which would be appreciated by many.

    7 Digital MP3 £13.99
    16 bit FLAC £21.99

The Motown sound is changing with this set - it`s hard to believe that some of these tracks are Motown although there are still quite a lot that fit that sound.Ivy Jo`s "Dancing In The Street" is so different. Still I`m happy to own it. I have it on 3 discs and I`m working through # 2 now.

Wow...this is amazing it's out so early. Thank you!

Looking over the list I was surprised not to see anything from Jean Terrell. Are there no tracks or are they holding off?

Lots of goodies here, much better than I expected. Stand outs so far Michael Denton "Someone For My Own" and Marvin Gayes` "Take Care Of Business" Marvin with the JBs ?
Spinners, Jr. Walker never lets us down or Earl Van Dyke and Ivy Jo. Check out "Dancing In The Street!

  17. #17
The Jackson 5 sound so young on "What's so good about goodbye". That high note Michael hits with "please" is impressive. Wonder if this was one of the very first songs they recorded?

Heading through the rest of the songs now.

This is just great - probably my favourite one so far - there some wonderful tracks here. I think I like the whole lot. I kinda thought "You're My World" would be too big for Kiki Dee but I do like this version. Anything by Terry Johnson is fine for me. Ivy Jo - wonderful and what a great take on "Dancing In The Street". The Bobby Taylor tracks too are amazing. Hearts Of Stone - very pleasingly soulful. Not one dud track heard - I'veonly played it all a couple of times but man this is fantastic [[for £13.99 too). Yes I'd prefer CD but the track notes on Udiscover Music help to make up a little. One happy chappie here.

Hard to pass up at the amazing price of only $11.49, even though I would pay more, even twice that, for a physical set. My problem is I tend to "lose" things I download because I have to eventually store them on a CD and then they tend to get lost in my collection in the paper sleeves. But at that price, even I will likely purchase this set.

    On Spotify in full

Wonder what Kiki Dee thinks listening to her recording for the first time some 50 years on! Good track.

A fun listen and great to have on Spotify. Lots-o-less-than-stellar, though. Usually Motown's self-cannibalizations were big misses.

Surprised no Jean lead Supremes here since she signed on in 69 and they began recording together

I'm very surprised as well, even if it was Jean solo or with The Andantes.

I'm enjoying this release a lot and I've probably listened to it three times since Friday. The one thing that really jump out at me is the fact that only 9 of the 60 tracks are by female singers. Anyone else find that odd? And I guess if you think about the artist roster in 1969 Motown was extremely male heavy. Might there be a part 2 in December?

I doubt that there’s going to be part 2. Otherwise it would have been issued as part 1. I guess there wasn’t much left of Motown’s female roster. The Supremes, Marvelletes, and Vandellas all had their output liquidated on past releases, as did Syreeta. I’m assuming all of Blinky’s ‘69 recordings are on her forthcoming anthology.
So I’m really not surprised by the lack of women on the set.

Looking at TCMS 1969 and '69 Unreleased only the following females were recording:

    The Supremes
    Gladys Knight & The Pips
    Martha & The Vandellas
    The Marvelettes
    The Lollipops
    Tammi Terrell*
    Kiki Dee
    Chris Clark
    Syreeta
    Blinky
    Valerie Simpson
    Yvonne Fair
    Jean Terrell
It looks like Barbara McNair and Barbara Randolph were gone by '69.
*Questionable if Tammi did any actual recording in '69.

I don't believe Tammi Terrell did any more recording after the session for "You're All I Need To Get By" in May 1968. On that track too it's obvious there was singing by Val.

With regard to "You're All I Need To Get By", the write up in TCMS 8 is quite telling - "Tammi Terrell paid a brief visit to Detroit during 1968, to work on "You're All I Need To Get By". Her initial lines are a touch uncertain after Marvin's strong opening...."."The track was recorded April 15, 1968, horns and strings recorded April 27; demo lead vocals recorded May 21; lead vocals recorded May 22; Gaye recut May 23; background vocals recorded May 27; Terrell re-cut May 28; LEADS and backgrounds RE-RECORDED May 29, 1968". Was that re-recording by Tammi or as I suspect Val then blended?

It's sad and not a great feeling to think about any of this and I'm a huge fan of Tammi - such a beautiful talent.

Would I be right in assuming that there are plans for a J5 unreleased package coming... I'm sure they recorded more than one unreleased track for their debut album. I've got a very bad copy of their cover of "I've Gotta Be Me" which was recorded in 1969 and didn't Bobby Taylor record at least an album full of tracks with them?

The J5 have had loads of unreleased tracks issued over the years individually and as collections. However, I feel sure there will still be some to come out.

That version of "I've Gotta Be Me" was recorded in 1971 during the GOT TO BE THERE sessions. It's not a 1969 outtake. I agree with you regarding the fact that there were definitely more unreleased J5 tracks from 1969. Bobby Taylor has said that they recorded almost 40 tracks before the first album was out. A lot of those have come out over the years on various sets and compilations but not all of them. We know "TO SIR WITH LOVE" was recorded during those first sessions but that hasn't been released yet so I'm hoping a full set will be appearing by years end.

Interesting that GK&TP's I Had A Dream was reassigned to the Sups. wonder when this track was done. Says by A&S. Joe Hinton produced the Sup/Top duet version. wonder if this was anticipated as a New Supremes song with Jean

On this post it's saying that Nick & Val wrote I Had A Dream [[Opus 1) - but on YouTube, it's saying Shorty Long & Sylvia Moy wrote it, Nick & Val produced:

The Shorty Long "I Had A Dream" is an entirely different song produced by Frank Wilson

He is Mickey Denton [[as stated by "Lucky, Lucky, Me". Mickey came to Motown with Harry Balk, Duke Browner, The Volumes, and The Lollipops, when Balk came to Motown to run Motown's Rare Earth label. They were artists and producer [[Browner) for Balk's Impact and Inferno Records, and were still affiliated with Motown subsidiary Inferno Records, which was half-owned by Balk.

Mickey was a long-Time Detroit singer, who also recorded for Amy, and Palmer Records, and with Balk's group at Big Top, and Balk's own Twirl, and American Arts[[part of World Artists [[where Denton was assigned) labels, as well as one or two other Detroit labels, earlier. You should listen to his "The Other Side of Betty" on Big Top Records, it was a Balk/Duke Browner production recorded in Detroit. It sounds like it could be a Smokey Robinson 1961 production. His version of "Nature Boy" isn't bad. Balk's Soul writers, Barbey "Duke" Browner, and Maron McKenzie wrote several songs for Mickey. So he was more of a Pop/Soul hybrid than Del Shannon was for Balk. They tried to market Shannon as pure Pop.

Listen to "Didn't We", and "Someone For My Own". He really could sing. He reminded me of Tommy Good. Listen to "The Other Side Of Betty", too. Too bad Balk didn't give him better material all those years, to have a national hit. He did do well in the local clubs in The Detroit Metro Area. Not having to take a "day job" during the '60s, with all that great Soul music, and then The British Invasion, was a quite a respectable feat. I envy him that, as I chose the "safer conservative road" getting a "day job" for my first 18 years after graduation from university, instead of trying to make it as a full-time cartoonist. I made it later, but it's always been a struggle, and I often wonder what would have happened if I had had the guts to try.

I think that the reason why we like this selection so much is because Quality Control wanted the "New" sound and not the old Motown sound.

So what's everyone's favorite tracks? And is it just me or does Chris Clark and Kiki Dee sound a little alike?

Fantastic hearing Ivy doing a vocal of YESTERDAY'S DREAMS, and Frank Wilson doing a demo of the four tops LOOK OUT YOUR WINDOW. Wonder if there aren't many Four Tops songs in the vaults from this point on
