Phil Spector - Part B - "Complete Philles LP Discography"

Welcome Wall-Of-Sound fans to Part B of the Phil Spector threads -- the "Complete Philles LP Discography"! It's taken longer than expected to prepare, but I've made it as complete as possible including Artist/LP titles listed by Philles catalog #, as well as tracklists with respective YouTube video soundclips. As a special treat, I've also included photos of each front and back LP cover as well as photos of Side A and Side B of each vinyl LP disc and label-copy from my own personal Philles LP collection. A big round of applause is in order for my good buddy Kenny [[Kenneth) who has graciously offered [[succumbed!) to post the Philles photos for me. I hope you'll all enjoy reliving the musical power and magnificence of Phil Spector's Philles Records.

[NOTE: The Crystals' "He's A Rebel" LP was the first Philles LP I ever owned. Because of it, at age 12, Philles quickly became my first favorite record label, and Phil Spector my favorite record producer. The 12-track "He's A Rebel" LP was an altered and, in my opinion, much-improved version of The Crystals' 11-track "Twist Uptown" LP on which "Please Hurt Me" and "Gee Whiz [[Look at His Eyes)" were dropped in favor of the addition of "He Hit Me" and the uptempo "He's A Rebel" and "He's Sure The Boy I Love", making the "He's A Rebel" album a much better-paced and powerful presentation of Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound.]

[NOTE: After keeping his Philles artists, the Wrecking Crew, and recording Engineer Larry Levine holed-up in Gold Star studio during the entire month of August 1963, Phil Spector released his iconic Christmas album, "A Christmas Gift For You From Philles Records", with its blue/black PR logo, on Friday, November 22, 1963 -- the same day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Phil loved President Kennedy and all that he stood for, and he also knew that a grieving America would be in no mood for a new rock 'n' roll Christmas album. Out of respect for both, Phil sadly withdrew the LP immediately. By the time he released it for the 1964 Christmas season, the Philles PR-logo label color had changed from blue/black to yellow/red. Although not a big seller at the time, by the 70s the Christmas LP on Philles was changing hands for $50 a copy which was considered a LOT of money back then. Both versions of "A Christmas For You From Philles Records" exist today, although the original blue/black version is highly rare and is worth a few hundred dollars more than the yellow/red version, and finding them in NM or SS condition is becoming harder all the time. Rarer yet is the white/black PR-logo Promo copy of the Christmas LP in NM condition which has been known to command $700 on eBay.]

    PHILLES PHLP-4010 [[Released 1/1966)

LENNY BRUCE: "Is Out Again" [[Live Stand-Up Comedy Routine)

    Producer: Uncredited

    Side A:

    1) [No Tracklist Provided On LP]

[NOTE: Enter At Your Own Risk!!! If you're easily insulted or offended, you may want to skip over this LP. It has been reported that Lenny Bruce was once a very funny stand-up comedian earlier in his career. However, by the time this album was released in January 1966, drug addiction had taken its toll and had severely affected his career. Phil Spector had always admired Lenny Bruce. Phil considered Lenny a friend, and, to help him out, Phil released this stand-up comedy album on Philles. There is mildly-explicit language contained within. Having been recorded in 1966, some of the content is highly politically-incorrect with insulting references toward certain groups of people.]

[ADDITIONAL NOTE: This album was included here strictly for historical purpose as it's a part of the "Complete Philles LP Discography" -- NOT to promote the album's content. Also, my copy of this LP is like new, yet, as you can hear, it's riddled with surface noise, as I imagine most copies of this LP are.]

[NOTE 3: I would normally cringe whenever I see an LP cover defaced with a sticker of any kind. However, the sticker on my copy is from Danny Davis -- Phil Spector's Promotions man at the time -- which, to me, makes it cool!]

[NOTE: When Phil Spector signed Tina Turner to Philles Records, part of the agreement was that Ike Turner could attend Tina's recording sessions, but he was to stay out if it. These were Phil's sessions, and only HE calls the shots, and rightfully so. Ike immediately agreed and, amazingly, all went well during the Philles recording sessions. To my knowledge, Phil and Ike never locked horns at Gold Star.

[ADDITIONAL NOTE: When Phil Spector struck a deal with A&M Records in 1969, part of the deal included, at long last, a U.S. release of Tina Turner's "River Deep - Mountain High" LP but with a slightly revised tracklist, as the Ike Turner-produced "You're So Fine" from the original intended U.S. Philles LP was replaced with Phil Spector's excellent production of "I'll Never Need More Than This. [[See "Phil Spector Bio thread and Part A - "Complete Philles 45 Discography" entry for Philles 135.)]

[No photos available for this title, as it was never released in the U.S.]

The Christmas LP came out before the date of the Kennedy assasination because my brother got it on his birthday Nov. 16th. We walked into the record store & flipped when we saw it displayed. The record label was the new Philles colors. Miami was a big record "breaking" market. Several of my Jr. High School friends also bought it. But we know it came out in the stores either on Nov. 16th or a couple days before. At least in Miami.

You're welcome, Peace! Are your British compilations, by any chance, the ones that Phil released on the Phil Spector International label?

Yeah, that's really odd, 144man. My guess is that Phil was testing The Ronettes' recording appeal before recording "Be My Baby" and the other Ronettes' hits. If he needed another new Crystals' LP, what better way to feature "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Then He Kissed Me" than to fill it up with tracks by his newest unknown girl group -- The Ronettes. No one would know the difference. Up until then, The Crystals had already been represented on the charts by 3 different lead vocalists [[Barbara, Darlene, and LaLa). What's one more different lead singer? Nobody knew Ronnie at that point. People would just figure it was yet another Crystal taking her turn on lead vocals. Gotta admit, though, it was really cool hearing Ronette Nedra Talley on lead vocals! Even I would have never guessed it was her! I would have figured it was Dee Dee Kennibrew of The Crystals taking her turn.

Well, now, THAT's one for the books, motony -- especially since the Phil Spector books have always reported the release date as November 22, 1963 -- the day that President Kennedy was shot, etc. Being a test area for new product, I wonder if you folks in Miami got early copies ahead of the rest of the nation? I could understand that, to a degree, but what's really got me stumped is that your copy had the new yellow/red-label version since those weren't supposedly pressed until the 1964 release of the Christmas album. This is yet another one of those scratching-my-head inconsistencies that drive us collectors crazy! But if you and your friends and family had a copy in your possession, you should know better than anyone. Thanks for sharing that!

    @144man and Gar,

I had no idea that some of the Crystals tracks were actually the Ronettes until reading this thread and listening to the "Sing the Greatest Hits" tracks. That is fascinating. Of course I knew it was the Blossoms on "He's a Rebel" and a few others but I never knew Spector just dropped Ronettes tracks into that Crystals album. And yes, nice to hear the other Ronette sing lead as well on a track!

Kenny, I was just as surprised as you when I first got The Crystals' "Sing The Greatest Hits [[Vol. 1). Actually, Darlene's lead was only on two of The Crystals' hits [["He's A Rebel" and "He's Sure The Boy I Love"). The Ronettes' "Crystals" tracks were all by Ronnie except the one by Nedra. I wish they HAD included one by Ronnie's late sister, Estelle. I've always wondered what she sounded like.

I thought I saw in one of the notes in your discography or it might have been in comments for one of the audio vids that Estelle had a few lines in one song...but don't recall now exactly where I saw it. Of course, you probably know off the top of your head whatever song it is!

No, Estelle's lead vocals on any of Phil's productions is news to me. You must have read it in one of the YouTube viewer's comments.

Kenny, these two videos are not Spector-related, but they'll give you an example of Estelle Bennett's voice.

The Crystals and The Ronettes shared at least a couple of songs - "I Wonder" and "Woman In Love [[I'm A)" are examples that spring to mind. There's not much to choose between the latter but The Crystals made 2 versions of "I Wonder" and I don't believe I have the single version on CD which is the version I prefer. Is this version available on CD?

There's a version available on the "Back to Mono" box which sounds like it must be the single version. I had posted the info and the link before I realized it was the Ronettes version, and you were looking for the Crystals version.

Hey Mystery! I love both The Crystals' and The Ronettes' version of "Woman In Love" equally.

Not counting a newer, remake version of "I Wonder" by the post-Philles Crystals, there is, to my knowledge, only one Phil Spector-produced version of "I Wonder" by The Crystals, and that is the record that you folks across The Pond got as a single. Phil didn't release it here in the U.S. at the time, as I believe he wasn't satisfied with it. For whatever reason, Phil couldn't book studio time at Gold Star, so The Crystals' "I Wonder" was recorded at a studio in NYC instead. As expected, the acoustics in the NY studio were far different from the perfect acoustics at Gold Star. Phil did all he could to compensate for the difference, but the end result was a strange, murky blend rather than the Wall Of Sound that we were accustomed to. I was surprised that he unleashed it on you guys in the U.K., although I see it went to #36 on the U.K. charts so, apparently, some folks liked it. I've gotta admit that it's really grown on me since the first time I heard it. In the YouTube video [[below), if you scroll down to read the viewers' comments, fans from around the world really love The Crystals' "I Wonder".

The only version of The Crystals' "I Wonder" that I know of is this:
    https://youtu.be/cGksVc1QWl8

It's available on the following CDs here in the U.S.:

The Crystals- "Best Of The Crystals":

The Crystals - "Da Doo Ron Ron: The Very Best Of The Crystals"

    The Crystals- "He's A Rebel"
    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F201340082955

    Hope this helps.

Yeh, you're absolutely right and that's the only Crystals version I have too - I've no idea why I thought there was more than one version - perhaps I was thinking of "All Grown Up" by them but I have both versions of that too. The Ronettes and Crystals also recorded "Girls Can Tell" but I think I prefer The Ronettes version there.

That's okay. It's easy to confuse one version with another. When it comes to "Girls Can Tell", I love The Ronettes' version, but LaLa's version seems the more powerful to me! Something about her whoa-oh-oh at the end just blows me away!

Wow, really offbeat material. She has a nice voice though. I wonder what they were trying for with these two strange songs?

Who knows, Kenny? If memory serves, Estelle's record on the Laurie label was released in 1968. I think they were abandoning the girl-group sound for the hippie, folk-music route, just as Dion DiMucci did with "Abraham, Martin, And John", also on Laurie. Personally, that new music did nothing for me. I was disappointed with Estelle's voice, as well. I guess I was expecting more. But it was still interesting to hear, as I wasn't aware that she had ever recorded a solo record. Only yesterday, I was reading that Estelle lived a hard life after The Ronettes broke up back in the late '60s. She suffered from Anorexia and Schizophrenia, and was even homeless for a while. In the article, it was reported that, while wandering the streets of NYC, Estelle was overheard telling people that The Ronettes were set to perform at a jazz club which, of course, wasn't true. Very sad how quickly and easily our favorite performer's lives can go down the tubes in so short a time.

Wasn't parts of "I Wonder" used in another song, but I'm scratching my head trying to remember what it was?
