This was really difficult limiting myself to just ten songs; I forced myself to stop at 12. Maybe my Diana Ross top 100...

After posting my list, I read the other lists. It’s quite interesting that we each listed mostly album cuts instead of big hit singles...

thank you , I was making my own Ross playlist and many of these songs are in it. I did notice how many album cuts made it and a lot of similar taste or agreement on Ross classics.

David I'm going to make this easy on myself and stick strictly to single releases, as I have so many fav album and live cuts that they easily outnumber the singles. In no particular order [[but probably based on release date):

    Reach Out and Touch
    Aint No Mountain High Enough
    Touch Me In the Morning
I Thought It Took a Little Time
    Love Hangover
    You Got It
    The Boss

    Cool

Some interesting and unexpected songs being mentioned on these lists.. Mine would be......

1.God Bless The child ...For me even better then the B.H version.
2.Theme From Mahogany... One of the most beautiful movie songs ever.
3.And If You See Him... Diana really bites into this one. The huge hit that never was.
4.Brown Baby... Proving she can turn on the soul when she wants to.
    5. Didn't We... You can hear the raw emotion in her voice.
    6. Don't Stop... Diana in sexy mode. Great song, love the rap.
    7. It's My House... A light and bright feel good song.
    8. This House. Great song from WO. Love the laid back vibe. My kind of music.
    9. " Free [[I'm Gone)" My fave song from EDIAND. Should have been a single.
    10. Going Back. A sensitive and tender vocal from Diana. Timeless lyrics.

"And If You See Him" had to grow on me. I remember when I finally stumbled across a copy of Surrender, that was probably the only song on the album I didn't like. Only in the last couple years have I really started appreciating Diana's vocal performance. It's really a great song. I even think with a tweak here or there, this could've been a hit single.

"Brown Baby/Save the Children" is probably my favorite Diana album track period, but definitely my favorite track on the TMITM album. She kills me with that one every time.

"Didn't We", definitely one of my favorite Diana live cuts. I especially like the way she ends it. I wonder if there's a studio version lurking in the vaults. That would be interesting to hear and compare.

"Selfish One" is probably the best song on that crap album. I think it was a fantastic throwback. Honestly if you didn't know it was recorded in the 80s one might think it was from the Supremes days. And I love Diana's vocal on it. I wish I had thought to add it to my list.

"I'm a Winner" has grown on me. I didn't dislike it but I was so impressed with nearly every other cut on the Surrender album that I didn't pay much attention to "Winner". But in recent years I've really gotten into how much Diana gets into the song. I think she may have had a hit with it had it been released. She sounds great.

I used to love "I Wouldn't Change". Loved it. Now I rarely make it a point to play it specifically. It's still good but it don't move me like it once did. Good stuff though Tom.

Crap album? There was some dross on there for sure , but what about beautifully sung tracks like "it's hard for me to say", "cross my heart" and "summertime"?

i thought Red Hot was one of her best RCA albums. it was produced by Tom Dowd , i think , and her vocals were good. this , and Swept Away and Eaten Alive were the three best RCA albums, imo. i think Shockwaves ,although cute was below par and Tell ME Again,to syrupy for me. I think Hard For Me To Say and Summertime are the two best tracks. I always felt if the album was released in 1983 it would have been a hit

Selfish One is now my favorite from RHRB, over previous favorites It's hard For Me To Say and Summertime. I think it may be Ross' best remake. I even prefer it to Jackie Ross' original.

[[But RHRB is definitely not a crap album.)

I agree [[mostly). I don't play Swept Away much and Eaten Alive not at all. Shockwaves is my least favorite RHRB cut. I liked the production on Tell Me Again but I think Ross' vocal could have been better.

It did come across a tad old fashioned in 87. I do agree that had this album been recorded in 83 it might have faired somewhat better then ross did.
It would have been great to hear Diana singing Songs like "Shine", "Summertime" or "Selfish One" at her concert in Central Park.
The album is a little more accessible and breezy then ross making the songs perfect for an open air concert.

That's why I would have preferred the album title Summertime, over the inappropriate and nonsensical RHRB.

I'v just opened my I tunes analytic to check what is my real top 10 list.

    Let's go up
    If you'r not gonna love
    To many nights
    pieces of ice
    that's how you start over
    Change of heart
    until we meet again
    Free, I'm gone
    force behind the power
    Love will make it right

The seventies are relegated to the bottom, even so, I pretend The Boss, Baby it's me, Surrender being the best albums.

"Selfish One" is my favourite cut from that album too Ran! The other song I liked a lot is "Cross My Heart", but I thought the whole LP was above average at worst.

YES, I love Diana's vocal in "I'm A Winner", she is properly into the song. And "I Wouldn't Change The Man He Is", I used to prefer Blinky's version, but Diana's version has grown on me a lot.!

The seventies are relegated to the bottom, even so, I pretend The Boss, Baby it's me, Surrender being the best albums.
Are those your most played Diana tracks Albator?

Two great selections, Tom! YGI kinda sneaked up on me at the time, and NOGTP was a stone-soul killer! A show-stopper on tour in the Year Of The Boss!

Yeah, of the RCA albums only Eaten Alive might be worse. It was false advertisement. There was nothing red hot nor was there much rhythm and blues to be found. Had Cyndi Lauper or Madonna done the same album I might have a different opinion. But Diana Ross knows rhythm and blues and for an R&B lover such as myself, this album left a lot- a helluva lot- to be desired. Another misstep in her RCA career. The last misstep there apparently.

I think Hard For Me To Say and Summertime are the two best tracks. I always felt if the album was released in 1983 it would have been a hit
Yes, Tom Dowd. Just looked over his producer credits for the few years prior to RHRAB and he just becomes one more "what the hell" question in regards to Diana's focus. What was she really trying to achieve? Maybe at this point she didn't care about remaining a hit maker. And of course by 1987 she had firmly cemented her place in music history. She was also newly married and expanding her family. So maybe this was just a creative move. Something she wanted to do with someone she always wanted to work with. Do I buy any of that? Not really. So if she wanted to continue to be Diana Ross Hit Maker, why the hell would she bring on Tom Dowd to produce all but one track? What had he done in the last couple of years that made her go "Oh yes, I must have Tom! He'll give me a hit and a hit album to go along with it!" Why not give Luther a go at the whole thing? Or someone else who was a bit more involved with hit making in 1987? I understand why even a television special couldn't make a hit out of this album or it's songs.

"Shockwaves" is cool only because I like the melody, but I would've much preferred hearing it from Madonna or somebody like that than Diana. I love "Selfish One" and I love "There Goes My Baby". The latter I love no matter who sings it. I don't believe I've ever heard a version of "There Goes My Baby" that I didn't like. Plus the song itself is important to the history of Diana's career, so that adds a special touch. But still there isn't anything extraordinary about it. Surprisingly, two of the cuts left off of the original album, "Sweet Soul Music" and "Tell Mama" are pretty good covers. Diana doing Etta just don't seem like it would be a good fit, but Diana does very well. What messes the song up is the background singers. It's like they come in too late and it messes up the groove.

I'd rather listen to Mary's demos from Atlantic recorded around the same time, bootleg audio complete with air and hissing. They were more R&B than most of the nonsense on RHRAB in my opinion.

The rhythm and blue tracks like Tell Mama and Sweet Soul Music, etc. weren’t included on the album. They were recorded for this project though. They were however featured in the TV special. Don’t know if it was the label who ultimately decided to not include them on the album. When the expanded album was released a couple of years ago, they were included.
