Only 12 songs out of decades of the company's output? It is a 100% impossible task. Not only that, but it is a technical impossibility. Some songs will run longer than five minutes.

This is interesting... I have already complied my favorites by decade for my Motown playlist. I have more than 12, but here is my first for the 1970s in play order

    Touch - The Supremes
Just My Imagination - The Temptations
We've Come To Far Too End It Now - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
Neither One Of Us - Gladys Knight and the Pips
Still Water [[Love) - The Four Tops
Reach Out, I'll Be There - Diana Ross
My Last Chance - Marvin Gaye
    The Bells - The Originals
    Silly Wasn't I - Valerie Simpson
Got To Be There - Michael Jackson
In And Out Of My Life - Martha Reeves and the Vandellas
Do You Love Me Just A Little, Honey - Supremes and Four Tops

It can be done. Just do like Motown did in the 80's on some of those 2-on-1 CDs: butcher and hack the songs so they can all be crammed onto the disc!

Imagine the fun of people trying to figure out if they've lost their minds: hmmmm weren't these songs longer before? did I just imagine they were?

    MOTOWN FUN!

I would have to include over three decades of music. The thread asks for greatest hits and favorites. I'm not willing to offer anything more edited than an official single version. I will not compromise sound quality just to cram a lot of songs onto a single vinyl disk.

So, again, this is an impossible task!

Soulster acts like we really care - ok so you aren't willing to sit and think about a limited number of songs. life will go on

and it's not like i'm mandating a format lolol. shift the rules up. it's just a forum

what would be your lp of missed/rare classics? best songs by obscure motown artists?

    You’re no fun. Let’s pretend.

The early British Motown Chartbusters squeezed 16 tracks onto an LP quite well. There was a little compromise on bass but more so on the stereo pressings. The mono pressings came across loud and clear. As the 70s rolled in, however, tracks got longer and volume 8 had several horrible edits.

I’d squeeze in 16 and arrange for Motown Chartbusters Volume 3 to be re-released with the original mono mixes as opposed to the fold-downs that we got given. That album is a classic.

    6. If I were your woman – Gladys Knight + The Pips
    7. With you I’m born again – Billy Preston + Syreeta
    8. That’s how heartaches are made – The Marvelettes
    9. 1990 – The Temptations
    10. Simple game – 4 Tops
    11. Ma – Rare Earth
    12. The night – Frankie Valli + The Four Seasons

I have a great fondness for “No On There” and I love the UK single mix of “Simple Game”.

”The Night” is a classic track that UK Northern Soul fans brought to prominence but I’m still puzzled as to why it was otherwise overlooked by the rest of the world. Great track.

Martha recently toured, and she sang "No one there". It's the first time I've ever heard her sing it - and the music was light and simple, allowing her voice to really shine through. Friends who were with me didn't know the track, and they were stunned to silence.
