Carole King must have had a poor quality or crooked financial manager. How could she have written all those great songs and only be worth what an upper middle class family has? Her house in Bel Air has to be worth from a third to half of that.

Marvin Gaye has been dead for a while. Is the $5 million how much he had when he died in today's Dollars? Otis Williams suffered from having to cut the money up 5 ways for all those years. I assume that is The Temptations' Otis Williams, and not the lead singer of The Charms.

Hell, the ghost of Elvis Presley likely makes that in a month!

The one which kinda surprises me is Smokey's. Smokey wrote so many classics that sold & still sell rather well & his songs have been covered by Pop artists & some of them did quite well. A few of his songs have been sampled as well. We're talking about a body of work from 1964 - forward.

For those reasons, I'd have believed that his figures would be much higher.

I'm not sure how reliable this is; I had some trouble with the site. I couldn't find how to plug in certain people; I'd like to plug in Berry Gordy.

As I believe Andy once mentioned, when you die, you sell more and you are worth more dead than alive; i.e. Michael Jackson goes from broke to wealthy. And I'm sure Marvin Gaye and Rick James are amongst Motown's best sellers these days. And I'm sure that Marvin has for many years now, probably since his death, been amongst the best selling Motown artists and most of that wealth came in those years.

I also suspect that in the last 10 years, earnings have plummetted for almost all these people; now performing is what you have to do and even that isn't as lucrative as it once was.

If someone can find out how to fill in names on that site, tell us what they show for Elvis Presley and Berry.

    Phil,
If my good friend Juice WAS getting paid by the word, the above figure wouldn't come close. But ya gotta love what the guy writes.

    Palladin,
I know a good "lawyer" that does identity changes. Could be the way to go.

    Ms.M,
Don't draw attention to them, they may be on to us.

Broke is a relative term. None of these people are destitute or homeless and one is no longer here but his estate is making quite a bit of money these days. Last report I read MJ past debts were paid or very close to being paid. [[this didn't include any lawsuits that were pending or may have cropped up after his death but the estate is very solvent.

I see this site had Michael in at $600 million or close to that; I think it's fair to say his death pulled him out of insolvency; it did wonders for Marvin Gaye's family and Elvis Presley's estate. A shame that the level of appreciation increases so dramatically after death.

I noticed Michael was in the broke group too!
