Motown Queen Mary Wells - born as baby mute and deaf ?

Hi folks,

I would like to ask the experts, if this fact ist true. I heard that Mary born mute and deaf as a baby.

Maybe it´s a similar story as with Mitty Collier, she became mute at the end of the sixties and had problems with her voice.

Maybe these are all legends, not true ?
I am really curious of the answers.......

NO, that's not true. Mary contracted menigitis as a child and had a ruff time with partial hearing loss & partial sight problem for awhile but she recovered.
