Essential Motown - Northern Soul Box Set - release date 21/09/2018

Due for release on 21st September according to Amazon is an "Essential Motown Northern Soul" box set. Available for pre-order but no track list as yet.

Probably will be a re-hash as Spectrum seem fond of Motown Northern Soul sets, issuing them on a regular basis [[so presumably they must sell enough). In the recent past they've done "Motown Northern Soul" and "Motown Floorshakers" collections.

    Thanks mysterysinger,

I would be interested but will need to see track listing. I guess the repackaging of older sets you mention but perhaps some fresh ideas.
I'll have all of the stuff, but at the right price I might think about it.

CD cover now available on Amazon....really cool it is too, with a DJ's 45 box and all our favourite record sleeved. But, alas, no track listing yet.

Got to be worth £7.99 of anybody's hard earned.

Cool cover indeed and it looks like a card fold out type. Interestingly, the two sets previously mentioned above [[Northern Soul and Floorshakers) totalled 65 tracks over 3 CDs so I'm wondering if the new set is more or less a repeat.

    Could well be.
It's been revealed that Richard Searling has compiled this collection.
    Anyway, I've pre-ordered a copy.

Same label that released the Supremes collection last year, it was a good collection as it used some l.p. tracks and the third disc was post Ross recordings . I will be picking this up probably on a deal in Asda[[uk) / Wal-Mart [[us)

As stated above, it will probably rehash previous similar compilations, but again, for the price, nice to have all these tracks in one place.
Surprised that not many forum members seem interested in this.....66 classic era Motown, featuring just about every artist from 64-70 ish.
More interest in recordings a deceased artist never made....or a rock band with no connection to Motown.
One worries for the legacy of Motown other than the same old top 30 hits......very soon that will be the only Motown that people know.

I hesitate to order without knowing the track listing. Isn't it odd to advertise a "compilation" with no track listing? This is not a complaint. I guess I will wait and see.

That does sound good and for a great price too. It's good to see a compilation that includes some lesser-known tracks and artists.

No details available yet but it is linked to the NS scene, so it is not a "hits" compilation. All uptempo tracks from virtually ALL the big names and less well known, probably including Originals, Frances Nero, Monitors, Elgin's , and more.

Some nice surprises in this collection. I know the artists, hopefully Amazon will list the tracks /artists upon release.
Although I have them all, it is the kind of cd-r you'd make yourself.
Presumably this will be a big seller…...or maybe not.
Do people half my age know/care about this stuff.?

Picked up "Motown Northern soul". [[Spectrum)...for about £3 on Amazon.
Again, nice to have these tracks on one CD and a good partner to the above set.
They would make great Motown party playlist, but after about 3 tracks you'll hear "Put on something we know". ...

Not to serious collectors, but surely better than "Baby Love" and the rest.
Many won't have these Paul, if it throws some light on the lesser known tracks, I'm all for it.

  32. #32
Can't understand why it needs releasing surely this is the same old soup with the best of Cellarful, anthologies and recent Ace compilations - you can make it yourself surely, not being negative just wondering who will need to buy it? It's just a repackage job.
Surely if you are a collector of the more obscure Motown you will have it all and if you are not you probably wouldn't buy it anyway as there are no Baby Loves etc.

I'm a collector, I have all this stuff, but it isn't about me.
I like to see this stuff in the hope that people like Tomato Tom collects it and gets to love Motown as I have done for 51 years.
Younger collectors like him are the keepers of the flame, long after I'm gone.

Snakepit, I have them all on vinyl, but like you I want to support these releases and support those individuals who create them. They won't get rich, but hopefully they will feel fulfilment. Such a low price, we should support. Doesn't conflict with my frustration about the non release of Ivy Jo, nor Blinky to date. Ivy Jo above all else

    Mike-UK,
I feel that releases like this have several benefits.
It provides the opportunity for new fans/ collectors to appreciate just what Motown achieved. It gives them a chance to discover tracks that they wouldn't know if their knowledge is restricted to compilations such as Chartbusters, Endless Motown box sets of top 30 hits. Or, heaven forbid, radio plays.

They provide an opportunity for new fans/collectors to learn and appreciate people like Ivy Hunter, Wm Stevenson, Clarence Paul, Staunton/Walker, Funk Bros and more...in addition to the big name producers.

There are serious collectors who will have these..
There are new fans who will have some, but are learning all the time...which, in my experience, was ALL the fun. I wish I had that opportunity all over again.
This set hopefully appeals to these new collectors and Motown fans.
They are the equilavent of the old vinyl Collection of 16 big hits...where as a young collector I discovered tracks by the likes of Blinky, Contours, Rita Wright, Shorty Long, and the lesser known tracks by BIG names.
Those albums offered nothing new, as all the tracks had been on 45, but they provided a wonderfull opportunity to hear great records that you hadn't come across.

Let's face it they release Motown Chartbusters and a new Baby Love set every couple of weeks. Great to have something not run of the mill. Even though I feel I have all the tracks hearing tracks on different compilations tends to refocus my attention to something I have skipped over in the past. This has happened a few times for me such as with the Motown Connoisseurs series

There's a great need for 'new releases', especially with physical copies, to be made available and promoted, simply to keep our music alive.

Some of us might be inclined to feel we've heard it all before, and so don't need it now.

But don't we sometimes go out and pay about the same on buying fish and chips one weekend, and maybe then do exactly the same thing the following weekend?

I think , as Paul intimates above, all the tracks are available elsewhere. Having to guess at some tracks/artists e.g. "The Stranger...Marvellettesot GKTPs...
Would help if Spectrum published artists.

Amazon now listing the titles, but NOT the artists. Still says 1 disc but then lists 3 !!
Just spotted a link to report information [[or lack of) regarding product.
Sent a note regarding missing artist line up.

I've ordered from HMV as the postage is cheaper than Amazon. £4.99 there too but no tracks or artists listed yet. I have a faint hope that one or other mix or version will be different to what I have already but either way I'm sure the CDs will be great.

Actually, given that Spectrum do a great job with their 5 original albums in UK mini-LP format [[e.g. Jackson 5, Temptations, Motown Chartbusters), it would have been great for them to have re-issued the 5 albums in the Motown Disco Classics series. That would've been great.

These releases would have far appeal if a couple of unreleased or alternates were included. I`ve ordered it anyway.
