Greatest Hits and Rare Classics - Motown 1991

I have two of the 1991 Greatest Hits and Rare Classics CDs that Motown released in 1991.

The first is Isley Brothers 60's - Greatest Hits and Rare Classics - 22 songs
UPC 3746354832

The second is The Supremes 70's - Greatest Hits and Rare Classics - 22 songs
UPC MOTD-5487

Do any members know of any other artists that had the Greatest Hits and Rare Classics CDs issued? It is interesting to note the shift in the UPC #'s for the same year.

Off the top of my head, I can recall cds in that series by Kim Weston and Brenda Holloway.

They also used a similar cover design for a "Best of" series that had releases by Valerie Simpson, Thelma Houston, the Supremes and Four Tops, Switch, and others.

Rare Earth was another GH&RC issue. there have been some discussions over the years regarding these series. George Soloman has provided an excellent recap of what all happened with trying to get these out, in particular the 70s Supremes version. I know i've reposted his story at least twice over the years on here.

do a search for "GH&RC" and you'll probably find it. most people use that abbreviation

All of the MOTD CDs were also released as 374635xxx2 CDs. I have them all so this is a fact.

RARE EARTH, SUPREMES 70s, UNDISPUTED TRUTH were also released in Europe as WD72www.
I believe JERMAINE JACKSON too.

RARE EARTH and SUPREMES 70s were released in Europe once again by PolyGram in 1992 as 530 xxx-2.

The original 1991 US cassette editions used alternate tracklistings / mixes in some cases. SUPREMES 70s is the most interesting cassette release.

This of course, is true and folks just need to use the [[MOTD)5xxx number within the 35463 consist e.g. for The Supremes 70s GH&RC release on MOTD5487 the equivalent 37463 number would be 3746354872.

The 5000 series began as a mid-line album series and, over time, CDs were issued that utilised the same 5xxx reference. In some cases you might have a vinyl re-issue, CD and cassette which utilise the same 5xxx reference in their catalogue number.

However, some numbers will have NO CD equivalent [[e.g. 5242ML Brenda Holloway "Every Little Bit Hurts"). Some numbers may have CDs but no vinyl equivalent [[I can't recall ever seeing re-issues of the 16 Big Hits series on vinyl but please correct me if I'm wrong). Also some might have been issued on cassette only.

I have always wondered about this. It is not a common practice to include in Motown CDs songs that were recorded by the group for a different label. I wonder how much Motown had to compensate the other song companies for the right to include these songs in the compilation.

Not knowing what labels the extra songs are from, by the time that CD was pressed, all the songs could have been owned by the parent company which would have helped [[or negated) any additional compensations.

It is also interesting in the Isleys case, as IT'S YOUR THING was one of the songs that Motown sued them over, alleging it was recorded while they were still under contract to the company.
