IMO it’s hard to pick which was worse...One bad apple or Mamas Pearl. Sorry for Motown heresy. Maybe the Jackson 5 should have just recorded One Bad Apple!

I always find it interesting seeing the chart positions in Billboard, Cashbox and Record World.
It's a shame that "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," "For Once In My Life" and "Signed Sealed Delivered" were #1 in BOTH Cashbox and Record World but not Billboard.
I didn't compile this. I got it from a book years ago. These are only songs that went top 10 in at least one of the trades. It only goes up until March 1971. Sorry if this looks like a mess. I'm just pasting...

Oh this is great. Thank you George Solomon. Growing up, we mostly only had access to the free weekly local charts put out by the local radio stations. You could pick them up at all the record shops. There is a nice , recent thread on this subject right now on the main forum. Many local Detroit hits never went that high on the trade magazine charts. Detroit was fiercely loyal to it's homegrown artists.

Thanks for those chart reviews George Solomon!
I enjoy comparing how the songs did in the three trade magazines.
That these songs performed reasonably consistently in each one confirms their actual popularity. I think the notion of the power of payola has always been somewhat exaggerated. These competing trades had a reputation they took seriously concerning their accuracy.
A few extra bucks wouldn't be worth the questionable placing of a song at #1 that the other trades were rating much lower.

Neither One of Us was #1 on Cashbox and Record World but not on Billboard. Just weird. Think that Vicki Lawrence song was #1 on Billboard.

The positions don't really differ wildly but the important factor to remember is that Billboard used a significant airplay factor.

For the 60s and most of the 70s Cashbox and Record World were compiled on sales only.

Diana Ross had top 10 hits in both CB and RW that didn't make the BB top 10 even after these dates.

Although it didn't go top 10 it's very noticable that DRATS' Forever Came Today made #13 in CB and #15 in RW yet stalled down at #28 on BB - probably means it didn't sell too badly.

    Thanks Florence!

I never knew that about CASHBOX and RECORD WORLD.
I would've thought that would've given BILLBOARD a significant edge as wouldn't sales trail exposure?
That's a big part then of what made BILLBOARD "the one" above the others.
