    Barbara McNair Motown Recordings

    Gang,

Can someone help me with info about Barbara McNair's Motown recordings. I have her Motown Anthology, which is the most of what she cut for Motown. What else is there? What other recordings have been released, and where?

I love Barbara's Motown output; I love her smooth voice and style and think, had she been promoted in the right way, she could have been a big star for Motown. Of course, she already had her acting career, so she was a star in her own right without Motown. Still, her Motown recordings were pristine and so so so good... Other Barbara McNair fans out there?

Many of the compilations of unreleased Motown tracks have songs by Barbara.

The first Barbara album I had was The Real Barbara McNair, which I loved. Later I bought the Here I Am album. By the time I bought that one, I was already familiar with and very much liked the Marvelettes' version of Here I Am Baby, but over the years I have also come to appreciate Barbara's.

Hi mistercaster, I agree, I really like Barbara's Motown recordings. Some a little too jazzy or MOR for me, but mostly excellent!!

I know that she had two albums out on Motown, Here I Am and The Real Barbara McNair, which make up Disc 1 of her Motown Anthology. Disc 2 is all unreleased Motown stuff, a lot of Smokey covers I recall. And I believe that Barbara has had a few other Motown tracks surface on various compilations like A Cellarful Of Motown! since then.

I love her voice, but haven't been into collecting her music. Many of the songs I've heard are on the Motown compilations of previously unreleased music. I think I dig her jazzier stuff more than when her voice is paired with the Motown Sound.

I like her voice. It sounds like her own. A similar voice doesn't come to mind ...

    Thank you !

You know Boogie, I hadn't thought of it, but Barbara's voice is indeed quite unique. And absolutely lovely.

    And you're welcome

Barbara was a good song writer too and had a hand in this one which has a huge following here in the UK. On this bid she sings slightly different words so you could say it is an alternative version. Obvious one of course "You're Gonna Love My Baby".

You're Gonna Love My Baby really was a great song, but I think I like the flip-side of the single even better. The Touch Of TimeA beatiful deep ballad, with great arrangement and Barbara's perfect phrasing, making you believe every word she sings:https://youtu.be/ZHpef53lUyUBtw the nice backing vocals were done by The Supremes.

This is the type of song I was referring to before. The track is fantastic, but I don't think Barbara's voice is complimented by it. It's just not a good fit IMO. I think songs like "Here I Am Baby" and "Oh Be My Love" are much more complimentary. "You're Gonna Love My Baby" works for some reason.

I've probably mentioned before on the forum how much I like "Just One Teardrop [[From A Broken Heart)" and also how "The Harder You Fall [[The Deeper The Feeling)" foreshadows the Invictus sound.
