    John Manship Acetate Tapes

Apologies if this has been discussed here before, but about 25 years ago I acquired some tapes of motown acetates from John Manship; unfortunately the tapes are long gone, but I do recall these including "Purple Snowflakes" by Marvin Gaye, (a few takes), the Four Tops "Break-in' Through" Workshop Jazz album and many others.... So my question is whether anyone else happened upon these tapes at the time (4+ hours in total), and what (if any of these tracks) haven't been included in various motown releases. (Of course the Four Tops tracks came out on lost & found).

Furthermore, there was also a private pressing of a whole album of Temptations outtakes, "Angel Doll"? Again this appeared on the Emperors boxset, but any info on this greatly appreciated. (As I sold this when I moved away from vinyl)....

I don't remember ever seeing it discussed here. I bought all those tapes at the time, and still have them in a playable condition.

I'll have time to check in the new year if anything on them hasn't been officially released yet. From memory, one of the tracks was the Coca Cola commercial "Joe's Place" by Gladys Knight & the Pips which was scheduled for inclusion in the aborted "Lost and Found" CD, so that hasn't surfaced yet.

BTW. I was wrong with my recollection of The Temptations private pressing; it was in fact various artists inc. "Angel Doll" by "The Temptations" entitled "Motown / Hitsville Masters Vol1" by Triangle Connoisseur Sounds", image below:

    Did volume 2 ever materialise?

  5. #5
I've got six of the John Manship tapes. The contents weren't always quite what were on the tapes, so I'd need to listen to them again. I'm not very good at spotting alternative versions.

I'll list the contents when I can and eventually make notes when I get the time to play them again.

Yes, I know. I was going to deal with this in due course, but seeing as you've brought it up, I shall address the matter now.

"Searching For My Man" is the other side of a release on the Teek label in 1963 called "For As Long As You Want Me". Both sides were written by Ty Hunter and F.Bosley. "For As Long As You Want Me (A4827)" was credited to Dotty McCullum, whereas "Searching For My Man (A4828)" to Dot and the Velveletts [note the omission of the final "e" in the spelling].

Your assertion that this has nothing to do with Cal, Bertha, Norma, Milly or Betty is correct, as some years ago Cal told Malcolm Baumgart that she had never even heard of Dotty McCullum.

Is David Ruffin's "Hills Of West Virginia" actually "The Rovin' Kind"...? I think David says something like "the hills of West Virginia, and far far beyond" in "Rovin"... I knew I recognised the lyrics from somewhere, lol.

The titles written on the labels on the acetates weren't always accurate. It's a long time since I've listened to the tapes, so hopefully I'll be able to recognise the track when I eventually play it again.

What is interesting is that I always thought these tapes contained all the tracks from the unreleased Four Tops "Breaking Through" album, as John Manship was widely known to have an acetate of this... Seems this was not in fact the case, maybe just put onto the tapes a few of the tracks...

It's also interesting to note that "The Night We Called It A Day", which is on Tape UM3, wasn't thought to be of good enough quality to include in the Lost and Found issue of "Breaking Through". However, it has gained official release since.

    Notes.

Rather boringly, everything that appears on this tape is what it says on the package.

I haven't listened closely enough to the tape to be categorically able to identify which tracks are alternative versions, which is particularly relevant to tracks 1, 10, 13 and 17. Track 23 is a version without strings.

Subject to whether the tracks are alternative versions or not, all the songs included in the tape have now gained official release in some format. Please refer to the "Don't Forget the Motorcity" site for detailed info.

I'm enjoying doing it as I'd forgotten some of the tracks. I was surprised to find my old Walkman was still working, which is just as well as my radio/cassette player developed a habit of devouring tapes.

I have listened to the next tape and hope to post some comments on it tomorrow.

    1. As always, please refer to the "Don't Forget The Motor City" website for the best info on the official release of the contents of this tape. Subject to whether tracks are alternative versions or not, all tracks have now gained official release in some format with the exception of Track 22.

    2. The list of contents of this tape was often taken from what was written on the label of the acetate. In some cases this was the working title, not the finished one.

    3. Supremes - You Keep Me Hanging On
    The Italian version.

    4. Marvin Gaye - Lonely Lover
    Without electronic overdubs.

    5. Velvelettes - Honey Love
More accurately "(We've Got) Honey Love".
There are versions of this both by Cal Gill and by Sandra Tilley. To complicate things, the sleeve notes on "Motown Sings Motown Treasures" refers to Cal when it's clearly Sandra on lead. Unless my ears are deceiving me, the version on this tape has Cal on lead.

    6. Velvelettes - Mama Please
The first general release of this song was by the Adorables on Golden World under the title "Daddy Please". The entry in DFTMC is therefore shown as "Daddy (Mama) Please". The reason for the change of parent is unknown.

    7. Marvin Gaye - Party Time
Official title is "It's Party Time".

    8. Marvin Gaye - You're A Son of A Gun
Official title is "You'se A Son of A Gun" although Marvin sings "You're the..."

    9. Kim Weston - Build Up My Baby
Official title is "Build Him Up". Some people will know this as "The Biggest Flirt In Town".

    10. Originals - Baby Have Mercy On Me
    Working Title for "Suspicion".

    11. Marvin Gaye - You're Wonderful
Not to be confused with the similarly titled "Darling You're Wonderful".
Some people will know this track as "Nobody But Me" or "You're Gonna Love Nobody But Me".

    12. Velvelettes - Twilight Time
Title changed to "I'm So Glad It's Twilight Time".

    13. Velvelettes - Come On Home
Working title for "Let Love Live (A Little Bit Longer)".

    14. Marvelettes - You Just Can't Run [Him] Down
Working title for "I Just Can't Let Him Down".

    15. Various - Ode to the Supremes
An unidentified male singer details the Supremes' career and places they performed while strumming a guitar backed by a girl group chanting Supremes' song titles. Unreleased for a good reason. A truly awful track.

Additions to Notes to UM 2 [Post 23]

    5. Velvelettes - Honey Love
Similarly, alternative versions led by Cal Gill and Sandra Tilley were cut on the unreleased track, "I'm In Love (And I Know It)".

    8. Marvin Gaye - You're A Son of A Gun
According To "Yesterday Today and Forever" magazine, this song was originally intended as a duet for Marvin & Tammi.

    15. Various - Ode to the Supremes
The date 10-5-67-QP-1 and the title are printed on the acetate's label. There is no mention whatsoever of the name of the artist.

    Notes

    1. The Smokey Robinson tracks are outside the timeframe of "Don't Forget the Motor City". The other tracks are included therein.

    2. David Ruffin - Hills of West Virginia
Despite the reference to the hills of West Virginia in David's "The Roving Kind", this is a completely different song. Produced by Eddie Kendricks and written by Eddie with Ronald Matlock, this track remains unreleased, probably owing to the lack of a master tape being found.

    3. Paul Williams - Feel Like Giving Up
On the same acetate as Eddie Kendricks, it shares the same producer and composers.

    4. Thelma Houston - I Want to Go Back There Again
Acetate has "(original version)" written on the label.

    5. Thelma Houston - Oh! Dear Mama
Can be found in DFTMC under the title "Ooh Dear Mama". Has not been officially released.

    6. Smokey Robinson - Wings And Halo / Fly by Night
Probably 1973 or 1974. Not officially released.

    7. Smokey Robinson - A Tattoo
In 1974 album "Pure Smokey", Tamla 331.

    8. Liz Lands - May What He Lived For Live
    Refer DFTMC.

Great HDH backing track from 1963. No vocals cut. Unreleased.

David's "Hills Of West Virginia" was written and produced by Eddie!? How fascinating.

So Eddie produced "Feel Like Givin' Up" on Paul (and on his own group Posse) and then "Hills" on David. Interesting.

    Thanks martin

    Notes

    1. "Don't Forget The Motor City" has been updated to a 2018 edition, and the site is as brilliant as ever for finding details for official LP, CD and download only releases.

    Side One
    2. Versatones - It's Company Time
Two vocal edits. See DFTMC for release details.

    3. Magnetics - Father Time
A weak and unsoulful girl group singing in unison. Unreleased.

    4. Come On Boy - The Supremes
3 versions not 2. The first version has no backing vocals. The other two versions are different takes.

    5. Marvin Gaye - You're Wonderful
    Refer Post 23, Note 11.

    6. Stevie Wonder - Workout Stevie Workout
    Version is the first overdub.

    7. Contours - I Can't Stop Dancing x 2
The second track is the band track with vocal overdubs but without a lead vocal.

    8. Four Tops - Make Someone Happy
    Band track without lead vocal.

    9. Marvin Gaye - Pretty Little Baby x 2
Second track is band track with vocal overdubs but no lead singer.

    10. Marvin Gaye - Purple Snowflakes
Although unlisted in the contents, the band track to this with vocal overdubs but no lead singer has also been included on the tape.

    11. Marvelettes - You Better Cool It
This is the demo which starts with Robert Gordy singing "Somebody Bought It" over a mainly instrumental track. No sign of any Marvelette on this track.
