If this subject has been discussed here before, please pardon me.

Last night I came across youtube channel with lots of Diana Ross tracks, which was called <Diana Ross - Topic>
According to their description, this <- Topic> channels are generated automatically by YouTube's video discovery system.
However, most of videos on Diana Ross Channel were provided by Universal group international, and surprisingly many of them are those rare tracks from their special edition CDs.
    Subsequently I discovered other channels like <Supremes - Topic><Temptations - Topic><Four Tops - Topic><Miracles - Topic><Marvin Gaye - Topic>, and Universal Provided lots of videos to them as well.
I made some mp3 out of them since their sound quality was good enough, which made me feel less necessary to purchase CDs or download them.
And now I wonder why they do this.
What can Universal get out of posting those videos to YouTube?
It seems that this is more than just promoting their products,
which is good to music fans, but I simply wonder why Universal has to do something to disrupt their own business.

Just take a look at their line ups.

Hi blue, I have wondered this myself... yea, it doesnít really make sense.

The videos are as you say uploaded automatically by YouTube itself. Now in theory you could listen to every song that had been digitally reissued for free in the best sound quality available, on YouTube. Not good for business though right?

So I guess they cottoned on to this and started to block all the videos. For me all of the 'Topic' videos are now blocked, but I think this is to do with the country I'm in [[the UK).

However, many of the videos still appear in search results and have their own 'Topic' YouTube pages as you provided links for. I don't know why they donít just get rid of them altogether. Maybe they canít.

This is indeed rather confusing and I hope you make some sense out of this prolonged ramble I just posted

most [[all?) of the Motown Unreleased tracks were available on YouTube, even at one stage in the UK but then I think they banned us Brits.

From where I am located, some of them are blocked, but there are still many of them I can view and listen to. And they are clearly stated "Provided to YouTube by Universal Music Group North America" or "Provided to YouTube by Universal Music Group International" in their description box.
Also I realized that there are some of Diana Ross's RCA materials on "- Topic" as well, and they were "Provided to YouTube by Sony Music Entertainment."
So it is not only universal, but other companies provide those videos to YouTube as well.

For last few days, I have made lots of mp3 out of these videos. With my not-specialist ears, they sound good as pay-site downloads.
I am still puzzled by this, but at the same time I am happy with this because I can obtain many of those rare unreleased tracks and new remixes for free.
