Detroit and Philly...'Just in the nick of time'

    Hi everybody

In the early days of SoulfulDetroit I had a notion after being a member for a few years and chatting to the likes of Dennis Coffey and Bobby Eli, that I would actually go to each city and record some of my songs. That happened in 2008 thanks to them and for a bit of fun I created an instrumental version of Tony Lamarrs 'Just in the nick of time' [[experimenting to see if I could make it as good as Van McCoys!) I put some photos together of those sessions plus some other bits and pieces that have happened along the way. There are snaps of Spyder Turner, Dennis, Me, Bobby and some of the MFSB guys in Philly, Double Exposure, The Velvelettes, Spider Webb, David J. Van De Pitte, Bob Babbitt, Uriel Jones, Pree, George Katsakis, Gil Bridges, some of the Motown and Golden World horn players [[John Trudell and Edward Gooch). There is just one photo of when we came over from the UK in 2003 for the big get together [[on stage with Dennis and Gil in shot, me playing the percussion...first time ever in my life and BIG thanks to George Katsakis for making that happen). Enjoy:-

Cool photos, 55Motown. And I love that instrumental track! It's a perfect blend of Motown and Philly soul. Thanks for sharing your incredible moments!

Great record, 55Motown! If I didn't know better, I would have sworn that the back-up vocals were Van McCoy. They have the exact same blend as those used on Van's productions in the late 1960's. Thanks so much for sharing!

Gary, part of me thinks one of the b/v singers is Sandi Sheldon and I think she was in The Vonettes. Check this track out. The first lead is rumoured to van McCoy singing in a high register.....the next lead Sandi Sheldon. Great track:

Hey, 55Motown! I recognize the blend of those back-up vocals for sure! But the lead vocals – you thought Van was singing the first, falsetto lead vocal followed by Sandi Sheldon’s second, lower-pitched lead vocal. I had no idea who the first, falsetto vocalist was, but I was sure that Van was singing the second, lower-pitched lead vocal. As it turns out, we were BOTH wrong! Both lead vocals are Sandi Sheldon [[aka Kenni Woods aka Kendra Spotswood). Here’s a video showing a latter-day version of the Vonettes singing "Touch My Heart." When you open the video, there’s an informational paragraph explaining it all.

Thanks to Ian Levine for posting this fun and informational Van McCoy-related YouTube video.

55Motown, I just realized that, as luck would have it, the informational paragraph that I mentioned above is visible only on a PC. The paragraph is completely hidden on my Smartphone. - Gary

But look at this Gary! More info.....

""Van and I recorded together using all sorts of different names. 'You Don't Know Baby' by the PACETTES and 'Touch My Heart' by the VONETTES, they were both us."

This suggests they both sing on 'Touch my heart'?

and listen to this...them both singing again:
