50 years ago: Stevie's UPTIGHT was on Billboard's Top 40: The version by --BILL COSBY

    yep!

If you don't already know, without looking it up ,
how well do you think each "UPTIGHT" version did on the Billboard Hot 100?
    Stevie's? Bill's?

[[and which do you think peaked higher? )

    Stevie had a huge R & B hit - 5 weeks at 1; and Bill reached 18 I think

But on the big chart Stevie ended up at 3 and Bill ended up at 4

    Thought process:

A version of "Uptight" by Bill Cosby!?
    That Bill Cosby?!
    Wasn't he a comedian?
    Wait, it charted?!

Back in the day I loved this song and you know what, I still do! It's the first time that I had heard of Bill Cosby who is still a relative unknown in the UK!

good Tom Tom ! You found the title [[which took every allowable space) provocative as hoped !

So yes Bill Cosby took this thing all the way to Number Four on Billboard's Hot 100 ! Not a bad radio run , especially for a skit requiring over four minutes airtime ! Stevie's original peaked just one place higher at Number Three , making their chart performances just about a tie.

    That's Cosby's only Top Forty appearance .

He scores better on the Soul chart though on his return there almost ten years later with :
