The Temptations or the Four Tops would have KILLED this!

    .
I'll never understand why they chose the Supremes to do the Sam Cooke album over the Temptations or Marvin Gaye. I'm not saying women can't do Sam justice [[Aretha knocked A Change Is Gonna Come out of the park), but Diana Ross didn't have that raw soulful edge to pull it off. And It's highly unlikely they'd let Flo lead the whole album.

IMHO, The Tempts would of done a much better job had they'd done the album. With Ruffin and Paul trading leads, they might of outdone the originals.

Not to say that Gordy and company didn't care about Sam's passing- I know that's not true- but the tribute album was all about cash money. Sam's death was big news and the Supremes- at this point- were the biggest thing to ever happen to Motown, and I assume the writing was on the wall that foreseeable future, the Supremes would continue to be the biggest thing at the company. I bet Motown banked on the Supremes' name linking with Sam's to sale a ton of these albums. I don't think Motown saw any other artist at the label raking in Supremes bucks from a Sam Cooke Tribute.

Vocally, I just think Marvin's voice was tailor made for the stuff Sam was doing. And because of that he would have been my first choice- artistically speaking- to handle Motown's tribute to Sam. But the Supremes had a similar quality. Sam was soulful, for sure, but he was probably as much pop as soul. I view the Supremes the same way. Their voices seem a natural fit for Sam's music.

The Tempts, the Tops, even Smokey and the Miracles could have all done an excellent album's worth of interpretations of Sam's music. My main critiques of the Supremes' album is that a) Mary didn't get a lead, [[b) the album doesn't appear to be the work of the Funk Brothers, leaving the musical tracks to lack that warm Motown sound, and [[c) that ghastly album cover. I don't know whose idea that was.

A Motown V.A. Sam Cooke tribute album would have been great.

Figured I’d bump this one up rather than start a new one. Give some members who might have missed it the first go ‘round to chime in.

I always thought The Supremes with Jean Terrell on lead would sound great on Superstition.
