    Sylvia Moy Has Passed

A notice by Rick Moy Ward was posted about an hour ago that prolific Motown songwriter, Sylvia Moy has died:

"We say goodbye to a Legend! Songwriter/Producer, Legend of Motown and Pioneer for women in the music industry and more.. Sylvia Moy has Passed. I know this will come as a shock to many of you and I am sorry for you as well. Myself as well as much of the Moy family are going through a very rough time as you can imagine. Arrangements will be posted as they are made. Thank you all in advance for any kind words and prayer for they are needed and will be well received. I myself am not doing well so if I don't get right back to some please understand. Thank you"

How sad. She was a big part of Motown's golden age. Didn't she usually partner with Richard Morris and have a part in writing "Honey Child" and some of the other Vandellas' songs?

    Thanks for posting. God bless.

I know she saved Stevie Wonder's job by writing "Uptight" for him.

    Sad News indeed.
When I was planning my visit to Detroit some years ago, I wrote to Sylvia Moy at the address given to me by a friend who had been in recent contact.
Unfortunately, I did not receive a reply before my visit.

Several months later, I received a letter from her, noting the fact that she had read it and was aware that I had been to visit Hitsville and Detroit, and she was sorry to have missed the chance to meet. She said that if I was to return, I should contact her again.
Her letter was on her own personal stationery, with the top of the page bearing musical notes/scales.
As I cannot read music, I had a friend 'translate' for me.
From the 'tune' he supplied, it was clear that it was the opening bars to "My Cherie Amour".
RIP Sylvia Moy..thanks for many wonderful Motown tunes

What a fine legacy of songs! You know, like "For Once in My Life," "My Cherie Amour" and "My Baby Loves Me" seem to be kind of an "instant standard." The songs gets better all the time, like a true classic.

Sad news for sure....I recently watched many short interview videos of Sylvia posted on Youtube. She seemed like such a pleasant woman, sometimes of few words during the interview, but she seemed to choose her responses carefully and gave much thought to them.
Rest in peace Sylvia, thank you for your contributions.

Yet another Motown star has left us. Our loss is Heaven's gain. Write something real pretty up there, Sylvia Moy.

Sorry to hear this sad news. But it is inevitable that ALL the people from our youth will pass on over the next 10 - 25 years. One by one they go, seemingly every month. I'll be joining them soon, even if after 25 or 30 years. The years fly by like days.

I was really bummed to hear about this yesterday. I'm also shocked to see that see was in her late 70s. I always thought she was a bit younger based on the pics I've seen of her back in the day. When it comes to Motown, it's real easy to forget that the people who made it are mortals just like the rest of us. Only when someone leaves us, are we reminded of that!

I've been to Swanson's many times unfortunately. I know the family. I will not be able to make it to Detroit for Ms. Moy's services but if I hear of someone I know attending, I will let you all know.

The Washington Post in today's edition had her obituary reported. It was an Associated Press story. Some statement were made by Paul Riser. He stated she was a great songwriter who was capable of singing opera.

I was unaware of her ability to sing opera. You don't hear much from Paul Riser these days.
