Kenny Lupper [[background vocals by High Inergy)

I have an interesting Tamla 45 in my collection, Tamla 54294.

The song is Passion Flower b/w Kiss Me Now. Kenny was found mysteriously dead from a drug overdose while he was married to Gwen Gordy.

    A little known fact.

I did not know about this guy, Bill. Very interesting! Apparently he wrote more for Motown than he sung; this was his only Motown single ever released. I like it very much! He was clearly very talented. Sad to hear of his death.

Actually, they weren't married at the time of his death. They married in 1976, divorced in 1977 and he died in 1980.

Here's another by Kenny Lupper. You can hear many tracks off his album "Testify" on Youtube. In addition to composing, he was a very talented keyboards / organist and played with Billy Preston.

[[The statement is made that he passed away due to spinal meningitis).

Another alt-fact. Tom DePierro who was an employee at Motown in Los Angeles sent me a copy of this 45. And I quoted exactly what he wrote on the sleeve about the cause of his death. I would believe him before someone else as he was there and in the know.

Thanks a lot. The souldennis.blogspot told a lot more information that most of us probably knew nothing about. He had quite a varied career in the music industry other than just one single record with High Inergy.

I tried to see the information on the promotional Motown album, but could not locate anything. Can you please show the reverse side of it with the contents and the catalog number? Thanks.

    Hi Woodward,
    The album is PR35.

Details from the vinyl album currently on sale on Amazon
The 1978 LP entitled SAMPLE THE MAGIC OF MOTOWN [[PR-35) is indeed a rarity,
for it was issued in limited numbers as a way to publicize upcoming releases.

    RANDOM ARTIST NOTES
Cuba Gooding, father of Cuba Jr., was lead vocalist for The Main Ingredient.
Their biggest hits were "Everybody Plays the Fool" [[1972) and "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely" [[1974).

Between 1978 and '84, Switch had te charting R&B singles.
Founding members Bobby and Tommy DeBarge went on to form their ow self-named band.

"Warm Ride" was Rare Earth's last of a dozen charting singles.

Three Ounces of Love were a soulful trio of sisters [[the Alexanders)
that issued one MOTOWN album then faded into musical obscurity.

Kenny Lupper was a studio keyboardist who waxed an LP of gospel music prior to MOTOWN.
He also toured with Billy Preston in the early '70s.

Includes release dates, plus peak Billboard R&B and Hot 100 chart positions [[where applicable).

    SIDE ONE
    [3:55] You Got It - Diana Ross [[5/78 - #39; #49)
    [4:16] Mind Pleaser - Cuba Gooding [[5/78 - #91; n/a)
    [5:29] Castles of Sand - Jermaine Jackson [[4/78 - #38; n/a)
[3:08] I Never Thought I'd Be Losing You - Major Lance

    SIDE TWO

I note it contains Major Lance's record which i rate as perhaps his best ever...

The album is also for sale on discogs for completists, from only £1.81...
