The Four Tops: "Hot Nights" What Happened?

I remember hearing this song played often on the radio in Philadelphia during the summer of 1986. It was from the long anticipated album "Hot Nights", but then it never materialized. They were still with Motown at the time. We didn't hear from them again until 1988 and the album "Indestructible". Does anyone know what happened to this album?
