OK then - 1974. Quiet Elegance with 'Have you been making out OK?' They were Detroit girls but recorded on Hi Records in Memphis Tennessee. How on earth were they never really big?????

Interesting. We were talking about him and that song just this week. Also interesting is that he died 49 years ago this week on December 10, 1967:

I will be honest and say I generally listen to the The O'Jays version of this song so it's been a while since I heard New Birth's. Still enjoyable....

Let her cry, for she's a lady
Let her dream, she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower growing wild

This was the anthem on our school bus when I was in high school. Every kid would stop what he was doing and sing this word for word.

And here's the song that broke him as a singer. I love Mark Adams' bass playing.

It was our anthem just as I was graduating HS. Danced to it on the way out of town to college! LOL!

That reminds me of this video. I used to love watching it. That was easily one of my favorite videos from the '80s. Janet was, in my mind, the personification of youth back then even though we're about the same age. The camera following her around with few edits was a fantastic way to bring this tune to life in video.

If you're going to put SOLAR era Whispers into the mix, don't forget their first hit for the label [[still one of my favorite cuts by one of my favorite outfits). This is when Leon Sylvers came into his own as a truly great producer and musician.
