Smile Berry Gordy on BBC Radio "Desert Island Discs" .. 22nd May 2016

    Hi Gang ...

It seems that the "castaway" on next Sunday's [[22nd May 2016) BBC Radio show "Desert Island Discs" is to be BERRY GORDY!!

For those unfamiliar with the show, during 45 minutes the "castaway" talks about their life and is asked to choose what 8 records they would want to be able to listen to if they were stranded on a desert island. The "castaway" is also asked to choose a book and a "luxury" to ease their stay on the island. I suspect that the show was recorded a few weeks back when Mr. Gordy was in London for the Motown Musical opening.

The show will go out between 11:15AM-MidDay BST [[that is 6:15AM-7:00AM on the East coast of The US) on BBC Radio Four [[and should be listenable around the world on The BBC website), and will be available afterwards on the BBC i-player for anyone to listen to.

This is the page for the show on The BBC website, those who want to get a taste of what the show is about might be interested in listening to last week's programme where Hollywood actor TOM HANKS was the "castaway".

Cant wait and I'm guessing that "Money" will get a spin somewhere in there.

I think he will choose Shop Around but if he does choose a Velvelettes song I'd put money on Needle In A Haystack.

I wonder if Doris Day will get a mention....

Or 'The Tears Of A Clown' being first released as a single in UK, and being a # 1 hit....

Doubt that TOAC will be there. Maybe a Doris Day track though.

This video from his family probably has more viewings than the entire Motown catalogue than we know.

    Times have changed.....

BG's selection may not include many Motown recordings, even from the mid 60's heyday....but I suppose later recordings from artists like Stevie, Marvin, Michael, Diana and Smokey would have to be on the likely list.

I have to think that any selection that Martha would make on the same programme [[I don't think she's appeared on it, yet?) would be of much greater interest to the real Motown fans.
[[give the lady a radio series : 'Motown In My Life', presented by Martha Reeves')

I'm interested to hear what will be BG's 'luxury', to take with him to the desert island.

When she appeared, Hermione Gingold wished to take the Albert Memorial LOLOL!

Pops We Love You. Dedicated to Berry's father who played a major role in supporting Berry's creation of the Motown Record empire. With performances by the 4 Motown 'superstars' - Diana, Marvin, Smokey and Stevie. Nothing could be more appropriate.

Yes I think there'll definitely be a Jackie Wilson track and certainly one or perhaps two Motown songs that are special to him, but it will be interesting to hear Berry's other choices that mean a lot to him.

Most of us like songs from our late teens through early 20s, best. I'd guess he'd choose several songs from the1940s and early '50s. I'd expect a few big band cuts [[maybe Count Basie or Duke Ellington, maybe a Billy Eckstine or Sarah Vaughn vocal. Maybe some city Blues [[Jimmy Witherspoon? Dinah Washington). Maybe some Pop crooners [[Bing Crosby, Doris Day?).

One thing is sure: Neither "Do I Love You[[Indeed I Do)" by Frank Wilson, "Like A Nightmare" by The Andantes, nor "When I Needed You" by Little Iva [[AKA Miss Ray), nor ANY Thelma record will be one of those 8, nor will any of the records released by Ed Wingate's companies!

I think my 8 would be the following:

"Up On The Roof" - Drifters
"Red Sails In The Sunset" - Five Keys
    "I'm Yours" - Flamingos
"Liberation" - Afro Blues Quintet +1
"Grand Spanish Lady" - Royal Ravens
    "My Girl" - Temptations
    "Young Boy" - Barbara Green
"Found True Love" Billy Butler & 4 Enchanters

Only ONE Motown cut - amazing! And NONE of my Motown Vault discoveries, nor any of our Airwave/Altair cuts! And no room for Blues, Gospel, Avant Garde Jazz, or one from the "Girls Group" genre! I'd need at least a Top 1000 to take to a desert island to take all my favourites.

he often tells the tale of The Beatles Management phoning him for permission to include 3 Motown songs on "With the Beatles", and his 'bargaining power' over royalties.
"Please Mr Postman", "You really got a hold on me" and...
    "MONEY"....could be!!

What an impact she had - Diana Ross I mean. The story told by Berry Gordy on D.I.D. regarding "I Hear A Symphony" and how he felt she was singing it specially to him. I seem to recall a similar story told by Brian Holland and how he was sat in his car listening to it. Didn't Smokey also have something going?

A very enjoyable show. I expected to hear Doris Day's Secret Love, but no.

It certainly made me hear 'I hear A Symphony' in a different light.

A fascinating listen, especially hearing Berry respond [[or try to respond in some cases) to a few questions he might not have been expecting. His music choice was interesting. Although it was obviously not a music programme featuring Motown and its history I was surprised that the company and the music wasn't featured quite as much as I thought it might have been.
