Oh dear god!
I LOV E it its great dance music and im buying it and Dr Martha reeves is the best IMO.
It is not bad. It is not her best record ,but she sings it straight like the original and I give Martha props for her effort! I have a cousin-in law who's mother turns 90 in a few weeks . She still goes to work at a restaurant everyday! Martha has been singing and recording for over 50 years and can still go out on tour and get standing ovations!!!
All these old girls and guys have their flaws ~ the bellies, the fat sagging from the arms, the voice down a few notches or the voice totally shot.
But what would we talk about if that all quit?
We all have to take our sorry asses out to the park and talk Liberal/NDP/Conservative or Donald Trumpetfish.
Having just listened to Tainted Love on You-Tube, I'd rather remember Martha for all the classics she recorded. Still I hope it sells a million for her, I'll be sticking with Gloria Jones.
Truthfully for me, even though I admire Roberta's warm devotion to Martha, and Martha's devotion to everything Motown, Berry and Diana included ~ I do think Martha has slipped more than her colleagues and her voice slipped early on. But I still love how she plugs away. Aretha's voice has slipped terribly too.
I think it ironic how some criticized the Supremes for the thin voiced Diana and the no voiced Mary and yet both of them have held up very well. Heck, Mary probably sang better in her 60's than she did in her 20's!
"but they were all great in their day"
I totally agree with that and nothing can ever destroy an artists great legacy. However what some vintage artists record TODAY is a whole different story. I'd far rather remember the musical greats as they were in their hey day. Listen with your ears and not your heart.
OK her voice is not what it was [[how could it be) but I actually like it. Along with "I'm Not Leaving" with Crystal Method. The Christmas album I can't listen to.
I love "I'm Not Leaving" with Crystal Method
This is unlistenable. Doesn't mean we don't respect Martha. At some of her concerts she is still great and her lower register is much better Why didn't they just lower the key???

Here in New Jersey the sun is set yet I'm experiencing lots of SHADE ...
It's a pretty good dance record. I find fault with the rather drab instrumentation. But It's a fun dancer for a Friday night! Sing on Dr. Reeves - I'll listen to you any day.
PS: As I've said before, "Lady In Satin" is Billie Holiday's by-far most beloved album, even though critics say her voice was by then unlistenable.
NOW - how about campaigning for Dr. Martha Reeves for her deserved Kennedy Center honor?
I don't know when this was recorded but it must have been recently. Martha's voice has become somewhat inconsistent. At some dates she seems to be on top of her game and at others she's not in such good form. The stress and strain of touring at her age no doubt have a lot to do with it and she's to be commended for giving her public so much of herself when so many of her age have retired. Even if the result is sometimes substandard, her audiences still love her and I think that's what counts in the final analysis. This recording is regrettable, however, and really should not have been undertaken, let alone released. Gloria's original set the bar on this and no covers have ever measured up, in my opinion.
on the Martha Manchester thread, Martha was on top of her game when she sang Dancing In the Street. I have seen clips of her singing w/o music and the results are often priceless. The fans love her to death and are loyal. She is the real deal and appreciates her fan base. Nobody can work the stage like Martha as she is in total control.
Martha's a consummate professional, and a brilliant live act. That's why I think the thing to campaign for is a release for her Live at the Copa album. She was vocally awesome in 1968, when it was recorded, and would probably sell now on the basis both of its legendary status, and the fact that she has a big fan base for her live shows to-day. What can we do about it - any ideas?
Cross your fingers and hope!
Acetates of the show have been on ebay fairly recently.
I agree. Copa is Martha's best live performance. I've had it on cd-r for years but an official release would be great
