Keith, I was wondering which version of "Lonely Teardrops" you are using? Is it the one with the music intro or the one that starts right off with her vocal?

I'm not Keith, but if he is using the version that was offered as part of the unreleased 1964 digital download set, Lonely Teardrops has the music intro. The notation following the track list in post #1 would indicate that that is the version being used on Motown Girl 2.

There is a small second hand record shop in Fulham [[West London) that stocks these ACE releases. It's one of those dying breed record shops loaded with Motown and soul records on the walls. I cycle over there to buy these releases. ANYTHING but give my money to Amazon!

I know of only one recording by Brenda of "Lonely Teardrops", and that begins with a brass & drums intro. That's the one on the CD, and it's the same as the one on the MP3 release. Where did you hear the other version, brother love? Perhaps it was on a boot CD, and the intro's just been clipped off.

Hey Keith, the very first version I ever heard was without the intro. It was on a cassette long before CDs were ever issued and I know for a fact it came from the vaults. It wasn't until years later that I heard the other version. Most of the tracks on that cassette have now been issued on different comps with a few by Brenda that have not been released. I'll make sure that you hear it. Keep up the great work!

Same thing with me i heard Brenda's version from 60s YOU'RE GONNA LOVE MY BABY,At a soul doo about 12 years ago Chris King spun it,and yes it was an original not a re recorded track ,genuine classic 60s motown. doubt it will ever show up as it must have been taken from vaults, cheers.

You can pay even less AND support Ace by waiting till the day of release and accessing 'reissuesdirect', via the Amazon website. I have purchased all of my Ace releases this way, normally at a standard price of 10.50 plus 1.26 postage. They are normally despatched the same day by First Class post.

In case you are wondering, 'reissuesdirect' is Ace. I prefer Ace to have as much of my money as possible. I have been staggered to see that Amazon UK have been charging a higher price [[PLUS postage where appropriate) for the last four or five Ace releases than Ace have been charging themselves, let alone their price through 'reissues direct'.

Remember, all the Amazon 'pre-order price' guarantees is that if their price drops before release, the price you pay will that charged on the date of release... and Amazon's price has barely dropped with the most recent MOTOWN releases. At one stage, the Mary Wells release was being sold by Amazon UK at a little over 2 MORE than the listed price by Ace. Bizarre....

So if you have placed an order with with Amazon UK under their pre-order guarantee, cancel it and order it direct from Ace. If you want to save a little more on the price that you pay, wait until release date and order through 'reissuesdirect'. You will still receive it within 3-4 days of release - AND BE SUPPORTING ACE.

Yes, that is the case but Amazon will clearly buy everything that they sell at a hefty discount, meaning that Ace will make less money should you buy from Amazon. Amazon's 'Prime' intention is to make as much money - for themselves - as possible. That 'discount' offered to Amazon will be retained by Ace if you order directly by them.

Amazon still make some money from Ace for hosting 'reissuesdirect' on the relevant page but it is only a very small amount compared with selling the CD themselves.

If we look back at the way Amazon have increased the prices of CD's sold themselves [[not those sold by third party sellers, although Amazon still get a listing fee) in specialist markets such as Motown over the last few years, I think it fair to say they are no longer doing any of us any favors. That is why I feel we should all give Ace as much support as we possibly can...

Well, of course Ace still gets something from the sale because they've sold the CDs to Amazon at a wholesale rate.

Sometimes I think it's better to order through a third party, such as Amazon, because Ace probably wants to maintain Amazon's superior distribution and sheer numbers of users who access the site. I mean, Ace has a great web site but I imagine it gets a fraction of the traffic that Amazon's gets. So even if they make less per unit, they likely want to keep the aggregate sales via Amazon due to the volume.

Amazon's over 20 postage free policy, has probably reduced my orders directly from them 90% so seems very short sighted.

What is "reissue direct" on Amazon? I have never seen that on any Amazon page. What should I look for and where is it for future reference? Thanks!

If we take the Fantastic Four - The Lost Album as an example, on the Amazon UK page you'll see '32 new from 10.37' highlighted in blue. Click on that; 'reissues direct' are the 5th seller down the list. 100% satisfaction to date. Not surprising really. Superb product, superb prices and superb customer service.

In case anybody is wondering, no, I'm nothing to do with Ace other than as one very happy customer, one who is elated that Ace chose to add Motown product to their ever increasing and fantastically varied catalogue. If we are to give Ace the maximum possible support, then that should include giving them the maximum financial return on each CD sale. Ace are happy to sell to us at 10.50 [[average) per disc, plus postage. They will certainly get a lot less per disc than that by selling to Amazon. Whilst I accept sales through Amazon on the whole would be greater, in normal circumstances many of those who purchase via Amazon wouldn't necessarily know what releases are in the offing.... we are very fortunate in having this forum, a forum that informs us all of what goodies are in the pipeline.

I began to turn away from Amazon a few years back on noticing their pricing policy had gone 'haywire' [[good British expression...). They were regularly offering CD's at prices higher than you could purchase directly from the manufacturer. This especially applied to specialist product such as Ace/Motown and Ace/Stax. In some cases it took a couple of months for the price to drop to a similar level. And then in the UK Amazon introduced a 20 minimum postage free policy, bringing them more in line with Amazon US. Similar to Mr Soul mentions above, this reduced my purchases from them drastically. No Amazon UK, your sales and marketing teams got it drastically wrong - instead of increasing my purchases overall in order to qualify for free shipping, you got it very wrong. I took my business elsewhere. Your pricing policy and shipping policy has backfired. If readers on this board are happy to pay a higher price for their Ace/Motown product [[using this as an example), with a smaller percentage of that selling price going to those who have taken the trouble - and financial gamble - to give us said product - in this case Ace - then carry on. I for one will not do so....

Hi Copley...I didn't think I was alone...furthermore as the price hardly ever change these day's there doesn't seem any point to pre-order, as if you wait for the release the price is invariably cheaper especially from Amazon Marketplace even allowing for 1.26 postage.

    Mr. Hughes,

Is this one of the photos in the cd booklet? If it is, thank you . And hoping that there are other rare/unfamiliar ones of other Motown girls as well.

that pic is in the booklet at the mo', Ms C., but we're only on the second round of proofreading at the moment, when things tend to fly in and fly out in a blink - I've noticed that even the cover has changed slightly since it was posted on the site. And there's a picture of a young lady in a swimsuit currently in the booklet which some elderly readers with blood pressure problems may find troubling, I'm sure Ace will be taking medical advice on whether it's safe to print.

A few days ago the price on Amazon US was 26.99. Now it has dropped to $19.99. May be a good time to reserve your copy.

With the elderly men clue it might be a photo from this session :

    http://slr1238.deviantart.com/art/Co...ello-453316860

or it may be photo of the voluptuous Brenda Holloway. But as of yet, I've not seen one of
    Brenda in swimwear.

As always, thanks again and again for the sound clips.
Which leads to a few comments/ questions:

First my favorites so far are:
Reassure Me That You Love Me- Brenda Holloway [[I just wanted that sound clip to keep on going)
This Is The Love [[I've Been Waiting For) -Martha Reeves & the Vandellas
Mr. Pride and Mr Gloom- Connie Haines
Mama Tried To Warn Me- Oma Heard
Mama Tell Me What To Do- Martha Reeves & the Vandellas
Girls Need Love and Affection- The Marvelettes
The Things Time Can't Erase- Gladys Knight & the Pips

    Now for a few questions:
Has anyone else recorded "I Can't Make It Without You"? Even though Debbie Dean's likely one its writers, her delivery is, for want of a better word 'mismatched'. But the band, drive and background vocals of the track are top notch.

Has Brenda Holloway also recorded "Momma Tried To Warn Me"? Oma seems to be imitating/singing in Brenda's style and the violin soloist may just be Brenda herself- it sounds as if it would have fit perfectly on the 'Every Little Bit Hurts" album on Tamla, if it were in fact first recorded by Brenda.

The rhythm and background vocals on This Is The Love [[I've Been Waiting For) remind me of a song that might have been written for the Jackson 5. Is there a Deke Richards/Corporation connection with this one?

Is Liz Lands providing the very prominent, powerful background voice on 'Just Go On Sleeping"?

From the timbre and delivery of the first line and most of the second of "Close My Crying Eyes", I almost thought I was listening to Tammi Terrell but then something shifted in the voice and delivery.

After the refrain/chorus of "Forgotten" when Chris Clark sings 'Big important man who spends his time' the melody sounded as if it may have been lifted from ''Mr. Bojangles"
Or am I the only one hearing that?

After checking DFTMC, I see that the Rustix recorded and released a version and it is a Deke & Debbie composition. But has anyone else recorded a version?

Your pic of Connie made me smile, CC! The one we've used of her is likely from a slightly later time in her life, and reminds me of my Auntie Clarice, who used to bring home-made cakes to our house and pat me on the head and call me "a dear little boy". The cakes were OK, though.

You've picked up on what's really a secondary theme of this album, though it emerged by chance. Many of the songs were cut by only one artist, so have never been heard before. There are over 3,000 Jobete publications listed at the Library Of Congress ...

    Keith....

Are/were the original band tracks - as played back to the artists for vocal dubbing, and before any additional sweetening was added - retained in the vaults?

That's good to hear, as would be those band tracks.

No doubt, they will probably have to remain in them there vaults, but I wonder how they would sound, with the addition of new vocals.....

I purchase all my Ace cd's from a wonderful Independent record store called Action Records in Preston, Lancs. I pay a tenner per cd which I think is a fair price to pay. I do use Amazon for certain other cd's but try to avoid them whenever possible.

The shop is worth a visit if you are ever in the area. They have racks and racks of soul cd's at reasonable prices, and lots of 2nd hand ones too.

I would imagine you will receive it within a couple of days. On the rare occasions I have used mail order it arrives within a few days. The owner of Action records is a nice guy called Gordon and his son sorts out the mail orders very efficiently. Let me know how you go on and apologies to everyone else for going slightly off topic.

Courtesy of Ace/Kent records and compiler Keith Hughes, I am delighted to say that 3 tracks from the forthcoming "Love and Affection" CD, [[tracks from the Motown vaults and previously unreleased) will feature, in full, on my radio show next week.
