    UK choices

I thought I'd compile a playlist of 45 A sides that were released in the UK first or not at all elsewhere. I'd appreciate any corrections and omissions please, thanks.

Tears Of A Clown - Smokey & Miracles
I'm Still Waiting - Diana Ross
All Of My Life - Diana Ross
    Love Me - Diana Ross
Why Did You Leave Me Darling - Temptations
He's Misstra Know It All - Stevie Wonder
Abraham, Martin & John - Marvin Gaye
Save The Children - Marvin Gaye
Why [[Must We Fall In Love) - Diana Ross, Supremes & Temptations
I Second That Emotion - Diana Ross, Supremes & Temptations
You Are Everything - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye
Stop, Look, Listen - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye
Behind A Painted Smile - Isley Brothers
Do What You Gotta Do - Four Tops
The Look Of Love - Gladys Knight & The Pips [[I think a UK single only)

Regards and thanks for any help!

I think the first UK only 45 'a' side released [[as opposed to a 'b' side flipped to an 'a' side in the UK), was TMG 517 Mickey's Monkey by Choker Campbell - and to this day I still can't understand why!

Didn't the UK office reject Choker Campbell's 'Come See About Me', as sent from Hitsville, in favour of 'Mickey's Monkey' - ?

'Mickeys Monkey' was used as a signature tune on a UK music programme [[Radio Luxembourg??), the name of which escapes me, just at the moment. The DJ would chat over it at the end of the programme.

Whether it was used for the programme following the release of the single, or released as a direct result of it, I am also unsure....

Martha Reeves and The Vandellas Forget Me Not - formerly a 'b' side to I Promise To Wait My Love but was promoted as an 'a' side with I Gotta Let You Go as the 'b' side in 1970 to promote their tour in the UK with Stevie Wonder

There was also a 3 minute 37 seconds long version of "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by THE TEMPTATIONS that came out in 1972 .... label scans here .....

    http://www.45cat.com/record/tmg832

I have no idea what the edit sounded like, I can't find it on Youtube and the only versions I know on CD are the full length ones.

Also, I think you can add "The Onion Song" and "Walk Away Renee" to your list rovereab as they both were released on 45 in The UK prior to The US release.

This playlist is going to make great listening. It also shows that Motown/EMI UK had some great ideas!

"Finders Keepers" by THE MARVELETTES crept out in The UK as a "limited edition" release in 1980 ...

    http://www.45cat.com/record/tmg1000

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VED8RoXOprI

And maybe that record by FRANK WILSON could be included as it was never officially "released" in The US.

The single release of "Smiling Faces Sometimes" appears to be a dedicated single mix. It's heavily edited down from the full-length track but the end result is actually very good.

Mix-wise, the track is in stereo but it's very much a single mix, with an uplifted upper mid-range and sounding a bit more congested and up front than the album mix, i.e. probably more radio-friendly in terms of sound balance.

Because it's a UK-only release with no published DM Number I can't tell who did the mix, although I'd guess at Norman Whitfield because it seems to have his touch.

A tell-tale sign is that just before Eddie Kendricks sings "sometimes" in the first line of the song the EQ on his voice changes and an audible tape hiss starts up, and this is the sort of thing that I've normally only ever heard in other Norman Whitfield mixes as far as Motown is concerned.

[[Various Invictus/Hot Wax do a lot worse than this.)

This track can be found on the UK single CD "Psychedelic Soul" compilation by the Tempts.

Thanks for the info about "Smiling Faces" Sotosound.

I thought I might track down this edited version on Amazon and possibly buy a download of it, as I'd have all the other tracks, but it looks like the CD was reissued in expanded form and this edit is no longer included ..... Grrrrr

I believe that the double album is a US release.

The UK album was released in 2000 on Spectrum and can be found here: -

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Psychedelic-...tions+spectrum

I had to add the word "Spectrum" into my search before it appeared.

    Sheesh!

Smokey Robinson's "Just My Soul Responding" [[TMG 883) and the Temptations' "I Need You" [[TMG 887) both appeared on singles in the UK earlier than in the US.

I don't think the following reached the shops other than as b-sides or album tracks:

TMG 850 Four Tops - So Deep Within You
859 Supremes - Tossin' and Turnin'
    865 Jackson 5 - Skywriter
874 Jermaine Jackson - The Bigger You Love [[The Harder You Fall)
889 Jr Walker & All Stars - Don't Blame the Children
    895 Jackson 5 - The Boogie Man
900 Michael Jackson - Music And Me
910 Gloria Jones - Tin Can People
912 Syreeta - Spinnin' and Spinnin'
927 Jackson 5 - The Life of the Party
    935 Commodores - Superman
938 Caston & Majors - Child of Love
936 David Ruffin - Take Me Clear from Here
946 Michael Jackson - One Day In Your Life
    948 Temptations - Memories

    E&OE.
