He would have been 85 years old today. What a talented man he was.

What always and still does fascinate me about Sammy and his history is that his Mother and Grandmother outlived him. His Mother died at 95 years old and his Grandmother at 112! They always lived in Harlem, NY as well and were well known the community - as they stayed active in community affairs and arts/entertainment until their deaths. Sammy was also half Cuban which his Mom would say she was Puerto Rican due to the political climate between US and Cuba at that time...his family history is an enjoyable read.

God Bless You Sammy - you broke the mold for many folk of color!
