    "Well, what happened is when I went into the service, the most popular band, of course, was Glenn Miller.

    So the logical thing for me to do was to use some of that styling of music, along with some of his arrangements and songs. That, overseas especially, reminded the kids out there more of home than anything else.

    I remember one time we were playing on Okinawa, we'd play one song, they'd be cheering.

    We'd go into a pretty ballad, and you'd see tears in their eyes.

    It was the sound of the Glenn Miller band.

    So when we came out of the service, we incorporated the sound of the Miller band and my trumpet and the trombones a la Dorsey.

    And with the combination of all three, we had sort of formed a sound of our own.

    WOW Westgrand! The last member!! Correct me if I'm wrong, but was the part of the solo in "Moonlight Serenade" originally written for another instrument [[maybe trumpet) & due to a cut lip it changed to a clarinet? Or did the movie "The Glenn Miller Story" take a liberty to make it more interesting?
    Anyway ......what a milestone!! Happy Birthday to him!!

    Moe, I think the British bandleader Ray Noble came to America, and hired Glenn Miller to arrange music for his band. Glenn Miller preferred musicians who were versatile with the instruments they played.

    Yes, the story goes that a trumpeter cut his lip and could not perform a solo, so another musician had to take his place. However, the musician was not a trumpeter, but principally a clarinettist.

    Also, around that time, Glenn Miller had routinely featured a sax section, led by a tenor sax. That was standard procedure for the bands of the day.

    The clarinettist was then tried as an addition, playing the same note as the tenor sax, but one whole octave above, with the other saxes harmonising.

    [I think this is called 'doubling'....it is used in singing, and Motown often used it with their background voices...soprano voices singing in unison one octave above alto voices, for example with The Andantes...or female voices singing in unison one octave above the male voices of The Originals or The Spinners]

    The addition of the clarinet added a bright, unique sound to the brass....and the Glenn Miller Sound was born.
