Bettye LaVette -Before I Even Knew Your Name [[I Needed You)

Most of Bettye's fans that she has gathered over the last 10 years are not aware of her 1982 Motown album, Tell Me A Lie. It was briefly re-issued on CD in 2009 in a limited edition. Anyway, one of my favorite songs by her is on that album. It makes me cry every single time I hear it. I just think it's beautiful. She performed it one night at the Carlyle last week. Here is the original version.

I had Bettye Lavette’s "Tell Me A Lie" Motown album upon its original release in 1982, and now I thankfully have the CD [[reissued by Reel Music in 2008). I remember thinking how musically refreshing this album was when it first came out 33 years ago.

You’re right, imnokid, "Before I Even Knew Your Name [[I Needed You)" is a beautiful song. Here it is in its entirety: [[Compliments of isolitiignoti 1)

Another one of my favorite tracks from the album is her version of Gladys’ "If I Were Your Woman". Here’s the link: [[Compliments of pieroangelo2)

This is a really great CD. The single off the album was "Right In The Middle Of Falling In Love", which sounds more Stax-ish than Motown, but it’s a great song nevertheless and it compliments the album nicely. [[Compliments of Bettye Lavette - Topic)

Ya gotta love Bettye’s version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". It’s hot! [[Compliments of Alexandre Elmais)

Best of all, for those interested, Amazon [[U.S.) still has a few copies of Bettye Lavette’s "Tell Me No Lie" CD available via third-party dealers:
