I'm sure we all agree?
I'm sure we all agree?
Well, there's probably better examples but I think the Marvelettes did a fabulous job with "Uptown."
Oh - duh - I see the Ross song is that weird clip you mentioned earlier. I will have to hear that.
I thought it was hip. It was a cool way to end side one of the Lp. Here it is for those who never heard it.
"MacArthur's Park" by the Four Tops!
Hey Lulu, I was going to say the same as marv2 but then I noticed you said "Oops! I meant on another label! I". That's an incredibly large range of songs isn't it? It might include "Beat It", "Thriller", "Billie Jean", "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love", "Ghetto Child", "Midnight Train To Georgia", "That Lady", "Sexual Healing", "Hang On In There Baby" anything by The Four Seasons heck the list is endless.
Sexual Healing, DUH.
"when you're young and in love", the marvelettes
"if i were a carpenter", the four tops
The Four Tops' version of It's All in the Game is my favorite, Levi Stubbs could have sung Pacman Fever and made it flawless.

"Run One Flight of Stairs" - Gloria Jones
"Me Without You" and "Dear Lover" - Mary Wells
"Come On" - Distants [[Richard Street, Otis Williams, Elbie Bryant)

"Love and Desire" - Patrice Holloway
"Never Felt Like This Before" - The Five Quails
Lulu, no, I don't agree!
It's kind of silly because many artists were on Motown for a blink of an eye. Someone could go to town with Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Neil Young, or Jerry Butler, all of whom recorded for the label. Having said that: some of my picks of non-Motown songs that were recorded by Motown artists are:
Midnight Train To Georgia - Gladys Knight & The Pips
Are You man Enough - Four Tops
Working Day And Night - Michael Jackson
I Think It's Love-Jermaine Jackson
For The Love Of You - Isley Brothers
it's your thing - isley bros
Martha Reeves/WILD NIGHT [1974]
Written by Van Morrison
Its hard to beat this one as far as I'm concerned .. and the songwriters and producers were Ex-Motowners as well!!
Roger
Anything by the Isley Brothers between 1969 and 1989.
I'll go for:
Mary Wells "Dear Lover"
Gladys Knight & the Pips "I Feel A Song [[In My Heart)", "On And On"
Jermaine Jackson "Do What You Do"
Stacy Lattisaw "Miracles"
Johnny Gill "Half Crazy"
Eldra DeBarge "Slide"
Waitasec, does Mary Wells' "Dear Lover" count? It was included on Motown's Mary Wells "Ultimate Collection", so some of her post-Motown catalog may have been bought by Motown, just like Edwin Starr's pre-Motown catalog is Motown's, as well as Junior Walker & the All-Stars, Fantastic Four, Grover Washington Jr, Toni Tony Tone...

"Amoureuse" - Kiki Dee
"Hang On In There Baby" - Johnny Bristol
"Solid" - Ashford & Simpson

"Lady Sings the Blues [[soundtrack)/"Stolen Moments" - Diana Ross
Missing You............................Diana Ross
Until Its Time To Go...............Susaye Greene
Thriller................................Michael Jackson
and finally ..................Sanctified Lady by Marvin Gaye

TWO great versions of the Rascals song
For Your Love - The Four Tops
If you mean non-motown songs recorded on Motown , by Motown recording artists, why not this one, appears on GIT On ''Broadway''
The Leading Lady Medley by Miss Diana Ross
"Blowin' In The Wind" - Stevie Wonder. For all I know, he probably was the first to mainstream top 10 that Dylan folk staple.
