    Stevie Wonder's Music: The 1966 -71 Period

Stevie Wonder has had an amazing career in music and thought it would be interesting to discuss it focusing on the period of 1966-71. I chose this time frame because he was no longer "Little Stevie Wonder" and had not quite yet become the Worldwide music legend he is today. He had some very good songs that came out of this period that rarely get discussed. Let's start here, with "Uptight" from 1966:

A few of my Stevie faves from that period are ........
"Love AGoGo" --- a big dance track at the 1st regular allniter club I attended as a 'lad'.
"I Want My Baby Back " -- a classic Motown dance tune.
"Ain't That Asking For Trouble" -- another classic Motown number.
"Angel Baby [[Don't You Ever Leave Me)" -- one of his best 60's dancers.
"Nothing's Too Good For My Baby" -- dance perfection.

I love most of his 70's stuff but for pure dance floor delight, you can't beat the above.

This song gave me the hint that he was inching closer to the genius he is now:

Midnightman, " I Don't Know Why I Love You" was incredible. It was the Blues, but not the old fashion gut bucket blues that older people listened to. Stevie was all of 18 years old when he recorded it! Imagine that type of feeling and emoting coming from an 18 YEAR OLD person? Whew!

The song is very dark, heavy and mournful and he was able to pull it off better than some 3 times his age. A genius!

^ Yeah I know. I actually think he recorded and wrote it at 17 or just before he turned 18 though. Either way, yeah for a person to be that young and have all that emotion pour out of them like that, it's amazing. Even if I wasn't there when he recorded it, listening to it now, you can see the seeds sow in what was to come from Stevie.

Stevie Wonder I Don't Know why Lyrics:
    I don't know why I love you
    I don't know why I love you
    I don't know why I love you
    But I love you

Always treat me like a fool
    Kick me when I'm down
    that's your rule
    I don't know why I love you
    But I love you
    Oh you never stop your
    Cheatin ways with another guy
    You laugh in my face
Lord how long must I be disgraced
    Cause I love you
    Oh baby, baby, baby
    I don't know why I love you
    I don't know
    You and me baby, oh

I don't know why I love you baby
    But I love you baby
    Oh darlin, darlin, darlin

You throw my heart down in the dirt
    You made me crawl on
    This cold black earth, baby
No I never, I never knew
    How much love could hurt
    Until I loved you baby
Till I loved you baby, baby
    Oh baby, I can't stop
    I can't stop crying can't you see
Here I'm pleadin on my knees
    I'm on my knees
Won't you help me, help me please
Cause I love you, I love you baby
    Sure enough, baby, yeah
    I don't know, you don't know
We don't know none of us
    Can't do nothing about it
    I don't know, I don't know
    Oh baby, I don't know, I don't know
Nobody can do nothing about it

I've always thought '67-71 was his best period.

I love all of these songs and would add:

    Angie Girl
Until You Come Back To Me
    I Gotta Have A Song
    Heaven Help Us All
    Thank You Love
I'd Be A Fool Right Now

Good choices too Rovereab. I am surprised no one has yet mentioned, the classic
"For Once In My Life". Here's a special favorite of mine: "We Can Work It Out" Stevie made me forget it was a Beatles song

Who could forget Stevie's Vietnam Era Christmas song "Someday At Christmas". Here was someone that just couldn't make a bad recording!
