Supremes under exposed late '66/early '67

I've noticed that the Supremes really didn't make too many appearances on TV starting from fall of 1966 to spring of 1967. They promoted You Can't Hurry Love on Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson and the Mod Mod World Special. Then when they got to "You Keep Me Hangin' On" they performed it on the Hollywood Palace and then as part of a medley on Ed Sullivan and Andy Williams a few months later. Love Is Here was performed once on TV. I just find it strange because if you compared it to late '65 to early '66 they definitely made more appearances then. I was thinking I'm sure it was because of the problems they were having with Florence as to why they weren't appearing on TV as much but at the same when May rolled around that year they appeared on Ed Sullivan, Mike Douglas, Johnny Carson, What's My Line, etc. Unless are there some appearances from late '66 and early '67 that I'm forgetting about?

They also performed on Sullivan toward the end of '66 [[Favorite Things, Hits Medley), and I know I'm forgetting something...But there are probably several appearances that have never made it onto YouTube. We really need a comprehensive television performance list to know for sure!

I also suspect that with their fame growing, they probably spent more time on lengthier tours, personal appearances, shoots, and recording sessions than before, thereby reducing the chance [[or need) for television exposure. But I could just be making this up!

    Rodgers & Hart Today - May 1967

I remember watching the Special at home that evening and then boarding a chartered bus at 11 PM with my senior class to go to Expo 67, the World's Fair in Montreal, Canada.

The Supremes were as big as The Beatles by then, and The Beatles were 'exclusive' as well, not doing as much TV...neither group really needed to..ICONS, both..

The Rodgers and Hart special, while aired in May 1967, was actually taped in August of 1966. Why it took them that long to air it I don't know. But as I said in my OP in May of that year they made a lot of TV appearances compared to the very few they did the prior 7 months. Also they appeared on the Ice Capades in early 1967. Does anyone know what they performed?

By late '66 both Shindig and Hullabaloo were off the air. I don't recall any other teen-oriented music shows filling that void. So that may have been a factor.

They were in high demand by this time so I'm sure they could be more selective in their appearances.

It's also possible that Berry was laying the groundwork for what would become TCB in late 1968 and limited their appearances even in '66 and '67 to only the most high-profile of shows.

Good question! I thought was the only one who notice that
Always thought that maybe Berry thought the Supremes were "too good" for those teeny bopper shows. The Ed Sullivan show and Hollywood palace was more.... Prestigious so to speak.
Like the other poster said their star was shooting higher and higher besides most of these shows were getting canceled around that time.

On the Ice Capades, the Supremes performed You Can't Hurry Love , I think, and something with Jimmy Durante. They wore the same red sequinned numbers they wore on Hollywood Palace. It's been a while since I've seen that particular tape.

I was happy to see that booklet in the expanded edition of "Supremes Sing H-D-H" contained the Detroit TV Guide's photo of the Supremes in the advertisement for the 1967 Ice Capades special. I cut out this picture from my parent's TV guide that week to include in an art class collage and haven't seen it since! I loved seeing that program on television when it aired. FYI the picture was much larger in the guide.

The Supremes had outgrown "teenage rock TV" [[as well as the chitlin' circuit of course and the Motortown Revues) at that point. So I'm guessing they toured a lot during 1966 and that's why they weren't on TV a lot. Just a guess. Mainly if you wanted to catch the Supremes on TV in '66, Ed Sullivan's show was the ticket.

I also believe that by the late sixties, a lot of these musical variety shows [[Shindig!, Hullabaloo, etc.) were falling out of fashion. The Supremes were maturing past their 'rock' phase, and they were doing much more touring. And in all honesty, the Supremes did not need to do too much television promoting. In 1966/67, they were at their peak and could sell a record without much heavy PR work. Gordy was guiding many of his acts toward supper club work, any way, and the white peers in this arena - Judy Garland, Dean Martin, etc. - were not doing much television work outside of specialty programs such as the Hollywood Palace, the Sammy Davis, Jr. Show, etc.
