Does anyone know how many 'girl groups' recorded for Motown?
I'm aware of The Supremes, Martha and Vandellas, The Marvelettes,
and The Velvelettes. I know the Blackberries recorded an LP that
was never released. Where there more groups?

VIP didn't even start until December 1963. That record is from 1966. And weren't The LaSalles a mixed group? I heard male voices as well as female in "La, La, La ,La, La"..
Robb, I don't know if I typed this in invisible text or what but here is the reply I gave to Calvin about the LaSalles; They were a band, not a vocal group. One female lead singer. [[And yes, the record was way after 1962.)

So given the fact that the LaSalles were a self-contained band, the extra voices heard on La La La were probably just session singers. I'm not even certain they recorded at Motown.
The Lollipops
Pointer Sisters were never on Motown!
...afraid so Lyrie...!

Bonnie fared far better at Motown than her sisters did. Her cover of Heaven Must Have
Sent You hit big. I still remember all the hoopla that broke out over Free Me From My
Freedom. though. That "Tie Me To a Tree" lyric caused some folks to lose it...
Yeah my bad on the LaSalles. I don't know what I was thinking, maybe that band name just sounds like a girl group name to me so I remembered it that way, but I should have checked it. I don't hear male voices in the backing vocals but I could be wrong about that too. I never heard of them until Motown Complete Singles, even after that I didn't pay them much attention as their two songs in that set didn't really interest me.
As for someone mentioning 1962 as the date for "La La La La La", that's probably confusion with the original 1962 "Little" Stevie Wonder version of that song.

PAL issued in the UK
Seeing this, I can't help but think of all the singers who thought they were gonna be stars. And it didn't happen. Or did it? Did PAL have chart success?
[[And lest anyone thinks that was a mean dig at the group, it wasn't because I too had those dreams! At least PAL got a single, an album and TV appearances!)6
If I'd have had work released on Motown that would have been stardom enough for me.
Robb
Sorry been away, the LaSalles "La La La La La", is from 1962, it was however issued in 1966 on VIP.
They were not a girl group anyway.

I believe that © 1962 Jobete refers to the year of the publishing copyright, not the recording date - which makes sense because Stevie Wonder released the first version of that song in 1962. According to Motown Complete Singles the LaSalles' recording date is unknown but the group [under another name] recorded for Swan in 1964/65 and then came to Motown.
Then there's that other well known Motown girl group, Mary Wells....
