Yes a nice article about Jamerson who undoubtedly was a fantastic bass player - no wonder many were influenced by his style. It is a shame the Funks weren't recognised much sooner but conversely would anyone have known who James Jamerson was without Berry Gordy?
Given his talent it is certainly possible he would have gained some recognition as a jazz bassist on upright which is where he likely would have gone eventually without Motown. Possibly even more personal recognition at first since he was virtually unknown during his lifetime but of course not as much as he has now, now that many people know him as "the Motown bassist". It is notable that he didn't just luck into the Motown gig but was sought out by Berry and I think the other Funk Bros. because they already knew he was at least a significant local talent.
