I Heard a Symphony
Can somebody explain why this cd is so much more expensive than all others in the series?
Right now Amazon UK is charging around 27 UK pounds, while all others have been in the 10-15 mark!
I was wondering that also jack020. I won't be buying it from anywhere at £27. Is it still an 'import' item in the U.K? It isn't even listed on HMV's site. Perhaps that's the reason.
Mine arrived from Amazon today. "Now here's a little song that you made popular, and we hope you like it now." I do, I do!
Thanks to Andy, George, Harry, and all responsible for this great set.
One minor correction for the timeline, in case popular demand requires a second pressing [[or whatever the right term is these days): October 28-November 3, Tour Stop at the Latin CASINO [[not Quarter) in Cherry Hill, NJ [[near Philadelphia - NJ needs credit for a few good things happening in its history!). I was there on November 2nd!
Here is the review I wrote on Amazon:
Ignore all the pre-October 2012 reviews. This is a brand-new, two disc,
remastered expanded edition of the 1966 "I Hear a Symphony" album. Disc 1
contains the original mono album, plus a stereo version [[so both the mono and
stereo purists will find satisfaction). On the original stereo album, many of
the tracks were actually mono recordings. In 2009, producers found an alternate
1966 stereo master, and this was used for most of the stereo versions on this
set.
The stereo versions are dazzling, with a broader, more expansive sound. The back-up vocals are crystal clear and more evident. "He's All I Got" is outstanding [[and those who love this song will be treated to a few extra seconds at the end).
Disc 1 concludes with 2012 mixes of "All of a Sudden My Heart Sings", "I Hear a Symphony", and "My World Is Empty Without You". This version of "I Hear a Symphony" extends the song by more than a minute, and features a substantially different lead vocal. This "My World Is Empty" is also expaned by almost a minute, and Flo and Mary are bumped way up in the mix. You can hear samples of these [[plus all the cuts) on the amazon MP3 site for this album.
Disc 2 contains alternate versions of "A Lover's Concerto", "Unchained Melody, and "Wonderful, Wonderful". The remainder of Disc 2 is a live recording from a September 1966 appearance at The Roostertail in Detroit. I love this. To me, the sound is much better than the Copa recording. There is a lot of banter, assorted Motown acts are recognized in the audience, and Flo and Mary fans will love hearing "People".
This is probably a set that will only appeal to die-hard Supremes fans, but I am one and I'm in heaven!
i got my copy today at Amoeba Music in Hollywood, which usually discounts the Hip-O list price by 10 percent. It appeared that they got at least 10-12 copies! Today was the release date by Universal for the few brick and mortar stores that carry specialty releases like this after the few week exclusive that Hip-O has for their pre-order and shipping. Additionally the release date for the internet sellers like iTunes, Amazon mp3, etc. Have a feeling that Amazon probably did receive their allotment sometime last week so that could start shipping for the pre-orders from Amazon to have arrive on the brick and mortar release date of Oct 9. Am curious if the 2,000 limited is both Hip-O and what is sold outside Hip-O or just Hip-O alone?
As usual for the releases by Harry, Andy, George, Kevin [[et al), am blown away by this set from the few selections that i have listed to so far. Another job well done!

Shipped yesterday, Oct. 9 and received it today from amazon. Amazing. A few quirks with the booklet [[I can barely read it with glasses), other than that, another beautiful set.
Thanks to Andy, George & Harry for another gem in the Supremes reissue series... It is great to have the complete IHAS album in stereo. The alternate versions are also very nice...Although I am not sure having Mary & Flo's voices so upfront in the 2012 mix of MWIEWY was the best decision... It would have been nice to have an orchestral version of MWIEWY based on just the strings, bass, guitar, piano, organ, sax and the girls... I thoroughly enjoyed the Roostertail show.... Keep 'em coming guys!
i loved having Flos and Mary's vocals up front for the new MY WORLD 2012 mix.best track on this cd[[imo)
Agree completely! It reminded me of a Cindy comment at a Supremes show here in Buffalo at the height of the RIGHT ON era when she said "Things sure are different now. You can hear us when we sing and speak!" Paraphrasing but the audience went wild with delight as I did when listing to the track today. Keep bringing out these expanded titles, please!
Gracenote [[via iTunes) doesn't recognize the discs yet! Guess I'll have to type it all in. Bummer,, My typing sucks!
OMG That new 2012 mix of My World Is Empty...is a REVELATION!
The two 2012 mixes are superb. I remember how disappointed I was when My World first came out and I could not hear Flo and Mary. It sounded like it was Diana's first solo. How wonderful it is to hear the entire group on this version. And I love the extended ending with Flo and Mary singing without Diana. I am bad with voices, but who says' Let's play that back" at the end. Is it Flo or Mary.
And I love the 2012 mix of I HEAR A SYMPHONY. When I got the 45, I heard the Supremes. When I replaced my mono records for stereo records, I hated the stereo version of I HEAR A SYMPHONY because Flo and Mary were barely audible. This collection has the stereo version, which I like only because of its stereo, the mono version, which I like because it is the first way that I heard it and you can hear Flo and Mary [[but it is not stereo) and the new 2012 mix which I love because it is stereo, Flo and Mary can be heard as they were in the original mono version and the beginning instrumental intro is a superb , I presume, by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Diana throws in a few extra Baby Babies here and there and that will have to take some getting used to after hearing the other version for decades.
I haven't heard the whole CD yet. I am listening to it now. But backwards me. ;) I had to play the last two songs first.
Thanks to all who made this happen and to the fans who continue to support the group
I too played the 2012 mixes of Symphony and World 1st! Amazing! Still haven't played the whole, but will get to it in time.
ExGuyParis... my 1st disc wasn't recognized by Gracenote, but the 2nd disc was... how weird is that!
Came home from trip to the west coast to find IHAS in my mail.
Great set. Amazing sound. Thanks to Andy and George.
Havent heard too much about the booklet. Any more info? You like?
I like some of IHAS, but I don't love it. All those standards had me pushing the next button on my player. The Roostertail show was loaded with too many non-Supremes songs and there were some flubs in the show as well, but the folks ate it up. I caught one typo in the booklet. It said the Supremes played the Roostertail's "man" room. It meant main. Overall, I liked the graphics and fans are lucky George Soloman is consulting on these projects. He knows what fans want and he listens. Personally, I'd like to see something different for the next expanded set, maybe not another live show especially if it's not much different from Copa or Roostertail. But that's just my opinion.
The booklet is nice except hard to read the print is so small. I didn't care for the foreign pic sleeves or the tamla/motown logo. I know alot of the hard core fans love that but but I'd rather see U.S. related memoribilia or even more photo's. The inside pic of the cd itself with The Supremes in those white gowns is a stunner. There are a couple typo's but other than that, gorgeous as always. The pic they used for There's A Place For Us is there but it always looked like they caught them off guard. The cover for Symphony is one of my favorites.
ohhhh ohhhh as Arnold Horshak would say! I love love love this set! Someone at the Roostertail must have had the mikes up I finally get to her Flo do People the right way, and Mary gets to sing that verse and she is off the hook with her sultry voice! This is one of the best Supremes shows I have ever heard in my life. I never cared much for the IHAS album with the exception of Hes All I Got and Any Girl in Love I love this album now presented in this format.
I mean the book has pics I have never seen there is one photo where Flo looks like Deniece Williams! Sorry I had to skip through Somewhere Im tired of that song but when I heard Let There Be Love I was blown away. THIS live concert proved how great they were with any type of genre. Marys voice is a great buffer between Flo and Diana but most of all I enjoyed the adlibs [[My World ..Florence saying oh yeah and in the beginning of the Sam Cooke Melody I can hear her humming) [[Mary going whoo , and dont nobody care about little old me) Ross is in fine voice here and I enjoyed her playing around with Youre Nobody Til Somebody Loves you.
The 2012 Mixes are off the chain and I normally dont like things like that. THANK YOU for proving that Flo was there with the studio chatter. I wouldnt care if they put out a Supremes CD with nothing but studio chatter [[hint). Anyway George and Andy this is one happy Motown/Supremes fan! Thank you for keeping the Motown legacy alive on these cds and giving the fans what they want. Hearing Diana. Mary and Flo as a FULL group has made my day today. I also want to thank Amazon [[that is where I got it) and HIPPO-SELECT for making this possible. ALL of the Supremes fans should grab this one quick dont do like I did and miss This is the Story.
KamasuJr what were some of the flubs in the show that you noticed. Im so glad Michelle was on its on and didnt go into Yesterday.
It states in the back of the booklet that This Is The Story is available. Yeah. On amazon for $300. I was surprised but happy it sold out. Maybe a reissue is in order??? Or expanded single discs.
This is the Story is available for download on itunes.
Received my set yesterday. Love it. Thank you Harry, George, Kevin and Mr. Andy. xo
Thx for info. Stephanie has almost convinced me to break my budget and get it but Im sick of eye straIn to read the booklet!

I like this new Supremes set I Hear A Symphony Expanded Edition, the best for me is the live show,at The Roostertail,Mary Florence and Diana was on they're A game, love it,it's also great to have it on stereo, this is a must have,as a Supremes fan,I hope one day they[[hip-o-select) release one of The Supremes from the 70s live shows, one of the shows i liked best, when Mary Cindy and Jean open with Feeling Good,MacArthur Park, and Jean's solo number is People,Mary had 2 solo's Can't Take My Eyes Off You and Barbra Streisands's I Will Follow[[Where You Lead Me),now that would be the show to have on cd,
Please stay positive
I keep loving this more with each listen. The version of "Unchained Melody" on disc 2 is wonderful. Hearing Flo & Mary carry the lead on "lonely rivers flow.." is so cool. And I just can't get over the" I Hear A Symphony - 2012 mix." Fantastic.
I know some people are less fond of the standards, but for me, that was a wonderful, wonderful aspect of this album when it was released. My parents heard my playing the album and said "What!?" That led to a discussion of all their favorite music when they were my age. They turned me on to a lot of music from the 30s, 40s, and 50s that I love to this day... and they were interested in learning more about other Motown music, a request I was more than happy to grant.
We discovered, for example, that the composer of "Unchained Melody" was Alex North, a film composer who wrote my all-time favorite film soundtrack -Cleopatra. That led to a discussion with my parents about other films he scored, which was a bonus in my early film education.
Greg - I send Disc 1 info to Gracenote, so you can give it a shot!
Could someone upload the alternative version of A Lover's Concerto to Youtube, please?
Could be a problem. I uploaded "I Hear A Symphony 2012"... and got this:

Thanks for trying. :)
Is anyone able to send me the file, perhaps? I don't mind trading - I might have something you guys might be interested in in my collection of CD's.
My copy just arrived today, so I'm joining the party a little late- well not entirely, as I enjoyed immensely Andy & George's preview show with Midnight Johnny.
A giant thank you to all involved for a superb job [[other than the few typos- as already pointed out).
One thing that no-one has mentioned, but then again perhaps it's only me. There is a performance shot on page 9 of the booklet. I looked at the photo and thought 'What a great photo of Mary and Flo singing quite expressively. Only after I had read the entire booklet and gone back to look at the photos again did I notice that Diana was also in the photo. My eyes had obviously been drawn to Mary & Flo. Did anyone else have the same experience?
I assume that the Timeline ends with March 1966 simply because you ran out of pages. After all this is a September 1966 performance. I would have liked to have seen highlights from April-September for continuity. [[Good promotion- many highlights were tied into sales pitches- let's hope it helps to keep the releases coming; a dvd of even more Supremes performances would most certainly be welcomed).
I wonder if a white background on the last page of the booklet [[to co-ordinate with the white of the girls' dresses in the picture-sleeve front cover) might have better shown the details of the last picture-sleeve photo.
Hearing Mary's solo on People made me wonder how she could ever have been led to believe that she could not effectively sing lead.
I was surprised that Diana Ross would almost forget to introduce the group. I did note that when she came to the introduction of herself , and she uses the staged phrase 'I'm the intelligent one', her voice changes considerably. I was immediately reminded of Flo and the 3 selections from the '67 Copa show included in the 2000 Supremes' box set. I wonder if Flo , who also changes her voice at that show, was both mimicking and challenging Diana by beating her to the draw.
I never thought Diana wasn't in the photo, just that it was more her side or back from the position of the microphones. After reading the comments, then looked and realized that her face is there! When i first looked at it, i noticed Mary and Flor and then of course, the sparkly gowns!
Speaking of live performances and the Roostertail show, George Solomon mentions that Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart is not included in the show. Then it dawned on me, is there a live concert where they perform the complete Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart anyplace? i think that one of the few hits we don't have live?

Tried putting in the 1st disc again and gracenote/cddb still didn't recognize. i think gracenote has to approve the submission first and that it does take a while. Plus they may get several submissions and they have to edit first. In the meantime, i typed the info, however, since i didn't have the cd in from the original import, couldn't submit a copy to the database. It will be there one of these days for future buyers!
