Pairing a Laura Nyro song with Howe's production was a staple for the Fifth Dimension, and I found it incongruous that this much-used pairing would be employed for Diane's first solo outing. After those couple of mentions, however, I never heard anything more about it until the track showed up later by The Supremes and by Diane. Checking references, I see that she recorded it in 1970 although it didn't appear on her debut album. I wasn't aware that the same backing track was used on both hers and The Supremes' versions but of course it's obvious once you know. Now I'm wondering if Howe had any hand at all in the Motown production of the song. Does anyone know?
